ATTENTION to ALL grades: Students who had turned in their science fair proposals be-fore Thursday (10/13) received them back on Friday (10/14) with feedback. I used a "red light," "yellow light," and "green light" feedback. We had a discussion about the three focus areas, hypothesis, variables and controls. Our discussion in class was that a green light is on track, yellow needs some editing and red is in need of change. We talked and took some notes on how to improve before their projects are due November
3rd. Students are welcome to arrange with me time to talk about their improvements if they need more clari-fications specific to their project.
"Do you have homework in science tonight?"
Yes, in general each student has daily homework. This should last about 10 minutes and they should review their worksheet notes or their Cornell notes in their interactive notebooks. Once or twice a week there will be a worksheet that we began in class that needs to be completed that might take longer than 10 min.
Notebooks are a key part of the science grade as it is their main source of review for tests. Notes should not be torn out. As they review their notes please encourage your child to highlight or underline, add additional information or questions from what was given in class as they study.
6th grade: We are wrapping up our study of the hydrosphere. The test was moved due to scheduling changes last week and we will have our test on Wednesday.
7th grade: We will continue our study of the cell and cell parts. Our unit test will be on Friday 10/28 covering the parts of the cell review and cell transport.
8th grade: We will wrap up the second half of our unit on genetics and DNA, focusing on Punnett Squares, cell cycle and genetic diseases. Homework is to review the notes that we do in class every day for 10 min or complete the assignment that we start in class. Our test was moved due to the awesome 8th grade perform-ance on Thursday. The new date will be on this will be October 27th.
Our field trip to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science is on October 28th (FRIDAY). We have all 4 spaces for chaperones filled at this time. Remember to bring a sack lunch.
I AM BACK! We have made it through our first week of classes and are on to our second. Here are a few reminders for all classes:
Article of the Week: Students got a break this last week. On Wednesday they will receive a new AoW to complete. It will be due Wednesday, November 2.
Election Project: We will be continuing to work on this project. This week students will be taking a survey to see what they actually believe and how they align with presidential candidates. This is just good infor-mation for them to think about and have whether or not they ever choose to vote.
Please note: we will be using last years’ newly implemented curriculum and with that, the students will be using digi-tal books at home instead of traditional textbooks. With that said, they must have internet access on a nightly basis as we will be relying on our digital texts as well as an online classroom forum called Google Classroom. Please make a plan so that students can finish homework on time.

We are continuing our unit on economics this week. There will be a quiz at the end of the chapter.

Modern Asia: Iran and Turkey
We will continue our look at Modern Asia focusing on Iran and Turkey this week. There will be a quiz at the end of this chapter.
8th
Grade Social Studies
European Colonization of North America
We will begin a project this week that will finish up this unit for us. Students will have several days in class to work on this and it will be their final for this unit.

It is important for all students to have their interactive binders and pencil pouches as well as a couple of other
items I have given them in class daily.
All students need to have their own atlases in class beginning August 29th.

Continuation Info
We will have our first parent meeting for Continuation on Monday, November 7, at 4:15. It will take about an hour. There we will determine if there is a better day or time for this as well as assign responsibilities for this year’s 8
6th Grade Writing-Students will read, discuss and analyze chapter's 2-5 in A Wrinkle in
Time. Homework for the week will include completing their chapter summary for each chapter read in
class. Students will have time in class to complete it, but what is not finished will be assigned for
homework. Summaries will be checked for a participation grade. Students will review simple, com-
pound and complex sentence types for our grammar lesson and will have homework on Wednesday
night in their grammar skill book.
7th Grade Writing-Students will read, discuss and analyze chapter's 2-5 in The Outsiders. Homework
for the week will include completing their chapter summary for each chapter read in class. Students
will have time in class to complete it, but what is not finished will be assigned for homework. Summa-
ries will be checked for a participation grade. Students have a test on sentence types and clauses on
Wednesday, Oct. 26th. We reviewed last week and students understand they should be studying their
notes and skill books practice pages.
8th Writing: We begin a new unit on Persuasion, Argument, and Animal Farm this week. Students will
focus on looking at how arguments are formed based on emotion, logic, and credibility. We will also
analyze arguments for logical fallacies. I'm very excited to start this unit at such a perfect time - my
hope is that as we move through elections, students will be better equipped to look more deeply at
candidates positions and ideas and analyze their viability.
Our grammar focus will be on phrases and clauses. Students will have a brief homework on Wednes-day.
Finally, we will start our first novel, Animal Farm by George Orwell. This novel is full of persuasion and fallacies and is a great way to look more deeply at these concepts in action.
6th Grade Math- This week we start Module 5! We will be learning all about operations with decimal
numbers. We will have our Module 5 Quiz next week.
7th Grade Math- This week we start Module 5! We will be looking into percents, percent changes and
applications.
8th Grade Math- We start Module 5 this week! We will be continuing our sojourn into linear relation-
ships by continuing to write and rewrite equations in slope-intercept form, write equations from situa-
tions, graphs, and just about anything else!
Algebra- We continue on with Chapter 3 this week by looking into inequalities, solving more complex
inequalities and talking about best practices in algebraic reasoning. There is a Chapter 3 Quiz on

Community Service Grading
2.5 new hours each quarter in addition to the hours required the quarter before
To receive a 100%, students should have a total of 2.5 hours at the end of 1st quarter, 5 hours at
the end of 2nd
quarter, 7.5 hours at the end of 3rd
quarter, and 10 hours at the May 11th cutoff date
for 4th quarter.
Until the previous quarter’s requirements are met no new credit will be given.
Students will receive 20 points for each completed half hour of service in the quarterly require-
ment. Additional half hours are credited to the following quarter up to the 10 hour requirement. Once the 10 hour requirement is met the student will receive a 100% for that quarter and all follow-ing quarters.
A log (available in Mrs. Hughes’ room) must be completed for each month’s service and turned in
to Mrs. Hughes’ room.
Partial half hours will receive no credit. Hours turned in after the quarterly deadline will be counted
