Anything received after this time will be in the following bulletin. Watch for special deadlines during the holidays. I recently received a phone message from a parishioner. I’m always happy when someone leaves a message on my machine at the rectory. Please don’t hang up when you get only the machine and not the real me. Recently, the only problem I had was that I could not understand the person who left the message. They were either mumbling or my hearing is getting worse. Probably a bit of both! If you call me at the rectory, please don’t hang up, just spell your name and carefully enunciate the number to which you want me to return my call. Sometimes I hear, “My number is 419-347-mbulisfertaktin.” I don’t have caller ID at the rectory and I hate not being able to call you back. Ah, the mundane struggles of life! MPHM recently had a photo taken of the entire Pastoral Council. As soon as I get that photo sent to me or Barb Pifher we will publish the picture with a little bio about each member. It is always good to know who to go to when you have a concern. Speaking of this, I hope that members of both parishes filled out the yellow sheet that was inserted in last week’s bulletin. We can always use the feedback. Remember, you do not need to leave your name on the sheet if that makes you uncomfortable. Speaking of being uncomfortable, we are now beginning flu season. A parishioner recently told me that they got a dirty look when they would not hold hands during the Lord’s Prayer at Mass. Please re- member to be kind to people who feel it is best to not touch other people. Just give them a friendly wave then wave your arms in the air like a good Pentecostal Catholic! Finally, please do not forget about supporting the St. Mary Catholic School fund drive. One blessed MPHM parish family is willing to match your donation until we reach $40K more! Our school is growing. Let’s help support the fine ministry of our educators on West Ave. in Shelby! May God be praised in all we do! God Bless, Fr. Reflections on the ReadingsThirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time taken from

St. Joseph Sunday Missal.

first Reading--Jeremiah 31:7-9The setting is the long-awaited homecoming of the Is-

raelites from their exile in Babylon. "Shout with joy for Jacob(Israel, God's people)." The author never lost trust in Godthat something or somehow he would heal the wounds ofhis people. The weak, lame, and blind (see Gospel!) are withthe returning exiles. God Cares!

The fact that "God cares" is also God's word to us now."The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy"(Responsorial Psalm).

second Reading--Hebrews 5:1-6The author refers again to the Jewish high priest offici-

ating in the temple of Jerusalem. He represents human be-ings to God by offering gifts and sacrifices. It is stated thatJesus is the high priest of the community and as such ap-pointed by God.

Jesus exercises his priesthood in heaven. Constantlyreferring to his sacrificial death on the cross, he pleads formercy for all of us.

Gospel--mark 10:46-52Mark wrote his Gospel to heal a certain "Christological

blindness" in the Church of his day. Spectacular preachersthemselves, a kind of miracle-worker and faith healer, hadcome along. They preached Jesus as a divine miracle-manand themselves as his successors. Mark did not find this pic-ture of Jesus compatible with Jesus as he really was: theone who redeemed us by his suffering, death, and resurrec-tion. Hence, Mark describes Jesus' miracles as signs thatindicate a spiritual reality.

In the healing of the blind man the reality is the healingof a "Christological blindness," a blindness of mind that keptMark's congregation from seeing Jesus as he really is.

Welcome to fall weather; what a beautiful landscape God has created for us to enjoy! focusing on strengths - our society has a tendency to expect individuals to recognize and focus

on improving weaknesses. Positive psychologists have studied the profound value of changing thatstrategy. Through their research, positive psychology has demonstrated that it is significantly more pro-ductive to understand and focus on strengths. Have you had a chance to spend time investigating andunderstanding your strengths and recognizing the strengths in others?

Calling all alumni! We are seeking to rebuild our alumni database. If you are not receiving the an-nual alumni email, then we would love to hear from you! If you would like to be included in receivingupdates and nominations for distinguished alumni, please complete a form that is located at the backof church and drop it in the basket at Mass, bring it by the school, or drop it in the mail slot at the parishoffice.

Budget/Pledge drive - Our Excel Beyond the Basics pledge drive is underway. If you are able tomake a pledge of any amount, we have a generous donor who has offered to match your donationdollar for dollar up to $20,000! Thank you in advance for considering making a donation. While we runa very tight ship, our recent evaluation of our school budget is projected to fall behind by about $12,500at our current run rate, due to how our state funding is allocated. Our current level of funding is basedon last year's enrollment. Last year, we were at 59. This year we are blessed to have 76 scholars, sowe have some ground to make up. We seek to try to close this gap through the pledge drive.

Thank you for continuing to keep our school, parish, and community in your prayers! We are truly blessed,

Lisa M. Rhodes, MSM
