Dear Parishioners, My friends, we all have been taught that we should value our uniqueness and learn to emphasize it so that it sets us apart. It becomes a type of self-definition. Better yet, if we have some-thing that no one else has, we think it confers specialness and worth. Our common humanity then becomes the mere back-drop for where the real action is. In the end, we will strive to do anything except belong to the mess that is humanity. Stewardship speaks of the value of our common humanity. God chose to become human in Jesus Christ. Therefore, basic humanity can be valued more than the dream of being separate and the desire to be special and unique in our accomplish-ments. By “living humbly” we move away from the illusory notion of being totally different and all the constant striving that is necessary to keep it going. It is far less difficult and just as effective to embrace and say the words: “Thank God, Thank God that I am like other men and women, that I am a human being among others with some gifts to share.” Our uniqueness then can serve others rather than serve ourselves. Henri Nouwen realized this when quietly reflecting on his fiftieth birthday. Here is what he came to understand: “Within a few years (five, ten, twenty, or thirty) I will no longer be on this earth. The thought of this does not frighten me but fills me with a quiet peace. I am a small human being in the midst of thousands of other human beings. It is good to be young, to grow old, and to die. It is good to live with oth-ers. God became flesh to share with us in this simple living and dying and thus made it good. I can feel today that it is good to be and especially to be one of many. What counts are not the special and unique accomplishments in life that makes me different from others, but the basic experiences of sadness and joy, pain and healing, which make me part of humanity. The time is indeed growing short for me, but that knowledge sets me free to prevent mourning from depressing me and joy from exciting me. Mourning and joy can now both deepen my quiet desire for the day when I realize that the many kisses and embraces I receive today were simple incarnations of the eternal embrace of the Lord himself.”

--Gracias! San Francisco: Harper and Row, 1983, p. 120 The Feasts of All Saints and All Souls, Friday and Saturday, November 1 and 2, are special days when we pray to those exemplary human beings who have died, some a long time ago and others more recently. Many are our brothers and sis-ters, friends and family that transformed our lives not by set-ting themselves apart but by being with the human race and seeing all its glory and possibilities despite its fragility. Peace, Father Mike Meany

Dlatego zwykłą ludzkość można docenić bardziej niż marzenie o oddzielności i pragnienie bycia kimś szczególnym i wyjątkowym w naszych dokonaniach. - Gracias! Mike Meany

SEASON OF STEWARDSHIP

My Parish Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

My parish is composed of people like me;

I help make it what it is. It will be friendly, if I am. The pews will be filled, if I

help fill them. It will do great work, if I work. It will make generous gifts to

many causes, if I am a generous giver.

It will bring other people into its worship and fellowship, if I

invite and bring them. It will be a parish of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, a parish with a noble

spirit, if I, who make it what it is, am filled with these same things. Therefore, with Your

help, O God, I shall dedicate myself to the task of being all things that I

want my parish to be. Amen

WHAT IS YOUR WITNESS STORY?

How have you been Jesus’ hands and feet in this world? Next week, you will receive a stewardship in-tention card. This card is an invitation to con-sider how you will pray, serve, and give next year in our parish! We Invite you to live as stewards with us!

Modlitwa za Parafię

Drogi Ojcze Niebieski,

Moja parafia składa się z ludzi takich jak ja;

Pomagam zrobić to, co jest. Będzie przyjazna, jeśli ja będę. Ławki zostaną wypełnione, jeśli pomogę je wypełnić.

Zrobię świetną robotę, jeśli będę pracował.

Będzie hojna w darach dla wielu potrzebujących, jeśli będę hojnym dawcą.

Przyniesie innym ludziom radość bycia w grupie,

jeśli ich zaproszę i przyprowadzę. Będzie to parafia lojalna,

Amen

October 27: Thirtieth-Sunday in Or-dinary Time

In this Sunday’s Gospel, the tax collector’s pray-

Last month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to bring God’s love and mercy by providing $526.00 in food, $1,061.00 for utilities, $1,950.00 Twinning with other Needy Parishes, and $900.00 in Gift Cards. Thank You! Have you considered joining the Society of St. Vincent De-Paul? Is there a family you know who needs assistance? SJB Children’s Liturgy of the Word The Children's Liturgy of the Word is geared especially for chil-dren ages 6-10. It is a special opportunity for children to under-stand and appreciate Scripture at Sunday Mass at 10:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Polish Mass. Basically, after the opening prayer (Collect), the children are invited to come forward with two adult Catechists and go to the Music Room in church to participate in their own Liturgy of the Word. Children’s Liturgy of the Word offers an experience for children to hear Scripture in words they understand and to share their own understanding of God’s word. The children return to the main parish assembly for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. We warmly invite all children in the parish to participate in the Children’s Liturgy of he Word. All parents, please encourage your children to join when the clergy invites them to come forward to hear the good news of the Lord. We welcome all of our children ages 6-10 to participate!

Children's bulletins are near the entrances at the back of the church. Children may use the bulletin to color during Mass, and may take it home to read. We hope your family experiences Jesus!

Bookplates to Honor Your Family

Donate toward one or more of our new hymnals through envelopes made availa-ble in our pews and at the church doors. You then can create a bookplate upon which you may commemorate an im-portant event, celebrate the memory of a departed loved one, or simply honor your family name. The bookplates will be placed on the inside back cover of the hymnal to be read each time they are opened and used. We are suggesting a $20.00 donation per book to cover the cost of the 1000 hymnals we purchased. Thank you for your dona-tions as we strive for more participation and joy at our liturgies. The entire singing assembly thank you!

Honoring our Veterans for their Service

Uhonorowanie naszych Weteranów za ich usługę.

Veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces served our country -- and now it is time for our parish to serve them. Unfortunately, many veterans face poverty, homelessness, chronic health conditions, and mental health issues. Many have difficulty even providing for their basic needs, something we often take for granted. St. John Brebeuf's Parish Pastoral Council is asking parishioners to help. Please: • Collect one of each item below and put it into a 2

-gallon sized "ziplock" bag.

• Bring your family's bag with you to Mass the weekend of October 26-27 or November 2-3. The bags will be collected and blessed.

• On November 3 from 1:30-2:30 pm, come to the Parish Ministry Center. We will gather all the donated items, pack them into boxes, and pray for those who will receive the items. A convoy of cars will take the items from our parish to the Hines VA Center to be given to veterans in need.

Questions? Please contact the Parish Office at 847-966-8145.

Weterani Sił Zbrojnych USA służyli naszemu krajowi - a teraz nadszedł czas, aby nasza parafia służyła im.

Jana Brebeufa prosi parafian o pomoc. Proszę:

• Zbierz po jednym z każdego przedmiotu poniżej i umieść go w woreczku „ziplock” o pojemności 2 galonów.

Woreczki zostaną zebrane i pobłogosławione.
