DAY 1 - Tuesday 27 October (the Americas) and Wednesday 28 October (Australasia and UK/Europe/Africa/MENA

9.00 - 9.15 am IPEN 2.0 & Conference Opening - Simon Murray

9.15 - 9.45 am Keynote: Angela Duckworth - How and Why to Develop CharacterIn this talk, Character Lab Founder and CEO Angela Duckworth discusses three dierent families of character strengths (also known as social-emotional skills, 21st century skills, whole child capabilities): Interpersonal strengths like gratitude and generosity enable positive relationships with other people. Intrapersonal strengths like grit and self-control enable the accomplishment of valued goals. Intellectual strengths like curiosity and creativity enable a fertile life of the mind. Character is malleable, and much of Dr. Duckworth’s scientific research examines conditions that enable young people to thrive. In particular, what adults do and say, and opportunities and obstacles, can either encourage or discourage the mindsets and skillsets that underlie character development.

9.45 - 10.15 am Keynote: John Ratey - Exercise and COVID-Time to boost your immunity and well-beingWELL-BEING is necessary anytime, but no time like the present as being well and fit is the most powerful antidote to COVID, both preventing infection and helping to mollify its potential ravages. Exercise is one of the main levers of well-being in general- maximizing physical and mental fitness. We raise our mood, our motivation, our connections, while keeping in check our stress, anxiety, and cravings. As well we maximize our cognitive abilities by pushing our brains to grow which leads to better memory, attention, creativity, problem solving and keeps our brain cells young can perky.

Exercise also lowers our chronic inflammation and boosts our natural immunity making us ready to deal with infections of all sorts and especially necessary in this time of COVID. As well exercise has a few unique eects that helps mitigate the binding of the virus and we produce more specific antioxidants that can help forestall lung and kidney complications.

10.15 -10.30 am Break 10.30 - 10.45 am Ignite: Anthony Seldon - Why Covid and AI make wellbeing in schools more vital than everFor a hundred years, schools have focussed on testing and examinations as their main purpose. Covid and AI give us the opportunity to reset the entire purpose of education. The world over, mental unwellness is rising, teachers are becoming more disillusioned, and employers are shaking their heads at the lack of preparedness for the world of work by our education system.Teachers mostly get this, so too increasingly do parents and students. But politicians and administrators, not so much. Heads, teaching sta and governors have now to take control of the position and devise a radically dierent curriculum and extra-curricula life for their schools, with well-being and character, and the environment, at the heart. 10.45 - 11.00 am Ignite: Caroline Adams Miller - Teaching the Basics of Goal Setting in Wellbeing EducationIn a world that is filled with catastrophic headlines and charges of “fake news,” it’s dicult for our youth to know what is real and whether they can create goals to make a meaningful dierence. Teaching goal setting theory to students can contribute to helping them become more autonomous and masterful in their own lives, and give them the tools to create a roadmap for success, which also enhances emotional flourishing. Drawing from her pioneering approach to the connection between goals and happiness as outlined in her book Creating Your Best Life (2009 Sterling/reissued 2020) and her new ”BRIDGE” framework for goal setting, Caroline will share why every student should learn goal setting theory and why it can make such a positive dierence. 11.00 - 11.30 am Q&A Simon Murray (IPEN Global Chair) sits down with Martin Seligman (UPenn) for a 30-minute question and answer session. 11.30 - 11.40 am IPEN Business Discussion 11.40 - 12.10 pm Keynote: Ilona Boniwell - Building resilience in dicult times: Lessons from the new normalEvidence shows that our collective mental health has taken a toll during the Covid-19. According to WHO, some countries have reported a three-fold increase in the prevalence of the symptoms of depression in adults, with children and adolescents experiencing more diculties in concentrating, irritability, restlessness and nervousness.Resilience used to be a “good to have” skill, preparing our youth for the unknown and preventing mental health diculties. With the unknown now the new normal, resilience has been upgraded to a “must have” quality for children, adolescents, teachers and parents.

What’s more, traditional protocols for resilience training passed down by experienced mental health professionals to classroom based children are now obsolete, since the classroom itself has become a relative notion and each one of us – an actor in building resilience in ourselves and others. Based on the recent experience and evidence of teaching and supporting resilience remotely and in cost-eective ways, this keynote will outline major skills and tools for your personal and professional resilience toolkit.

12.10 - 12.25 pm Ignite: Anne Johnstone - The Case for Positive EducationIn this session, Anne will explore the case for positive education. With mental health issues aecting approximately 1 in 4 young people at some time in their lives, there is an important role educators can play in oering both preventative strategies, and helping support the development of student resilience. Anne will explore ways in which the principles and strategies of positive psychology can be implemented in schools to help build student wellbeing through their experience of positive emotion, a greater sense of engagement and flow in their learning, building positive relationships, encouraging the pursuit of meaning and purpose, and understanding the importance of grit and a growth mindset on achievement and well-being. Anne will also explore research that shows that learning and academic outcomes are profoundly influenced by wellbeing.

12.25 - 12.40 pm Ignite: Rosalinda Ballesteros - Purpose driven university, incorporating an Ecosystem of Wellbeing in a whole systemUniversidad Tecmilenio is an example of application of Positive Education with a student population of 60,000, we will review how to incorporate wellbeing in the curriculum, across the curriculum and in student activities. Suggestions based on our benchmark and example will be given during the presentation, learn how to incorporate the principles of wellbeing and character in a school systems approach and the challenges that you might face.

12.40 - 1.10 pm Masterclasses: Crisis or Catalyst? Examining COVID-19’s Implications for Positive Education with Matthew WhiteIs COVID-19 the defining education crisis or catalyst of our time? Over the past 20 years, international research in wellbeing and resilience education has helped teachers to create positive learning environments in schools with evidence-based strategies. However, the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted education in extraordinary ways and may be the most significant disruption to education in 100 years. The pace of the pandemic and the severity of confusion and uncertainty about the impact on schools, schooling and education raise vital questions. There is a shortage of research investigating the impact of COVID-19 on schools and schooling. In this presentation, I examine the immediate impact of the pandemic on education, adopting an ecological framework. Then I introduce a model to interpret the pandemic’s influence and the response of educational systems drawing on the research from positive psychology. The presentation considers the significant developments in positive education research from the past decade. The presentation examines the development of the field across two phases. I assert that positive education research has the potential to make a significant contribution to how teaching and learning are conceptualised within the next decade to create more resilient, robust and flourishing education systems.

Leadership: what’s love got to do with it? with Katy Granville-Champan & Emmie BidstonThis Masterclass will explore the impact of love on leadership and flourishing. We begin with the premise that love is crucial to flourishing and that the key role of any leader is to enable others to flourish, particularly in a school, where we are in the privileged position of educating young people. We also argue that since everyone has the capacity to love, anyone can also improve another person’s flourishing; following this argument, we propose that anyone can be a leader. We will present you with three key lessons to bring love into your leadership, supported by rigorous research from positive psychology and positive organisational scholarship, along with case studies and stories. We will also ask you to consider how you can apply each of these lessons to your own practice.

How to involve play in your teaching as a lever to unlocking academic superpowers in your class with Louise TidmandWe all have childhood memories that are vivid in our minds, more than often they involve play, fun and positive emotions. They build somatic markers that can be triggered by a smell, a taste or music that we associate with that moment in time. Play is an unencumbered state that is ideal for exploring and understanding boundaries (Tidmand, 2020) and in this state we more than often wander into the zone of proximal development (Vygotsky, 1967) where our students continuously open up for learning. In this talk Louise Tidmand will unravel the eect of playfulness on the dopamin reward system in the brain that triggers expansion of the range of our immediate thought and action repertoire – our cognition and our attention.

Future Possibilities for Wellbeing in Education: Emerging Trends and Transformations with David BottRight now, wherever you look, schools are evolving – fast. Around the world, dedicated educators are beginning to see a new vision for education emerge from the mist. Through the eyes of a professional educator, David will draw on his work in supporting the implementation of Positive Education in dozens of schools globally, insights from his role on the Dubai Future Council, and recent conversations with leading educators and futurists to outline ten megatrends in education. These, David will argue, are set to shape the next iteration of schooling – directly aecting the way teachers and students will interface with the learning experience of the future.

1.10 - 1.30 pm Break 1.30 - 2.00 pm Keynote: Dóra Guðrún Guðmundsdóttir - Wellbeing for all - leaving no one behind. A whole of society approach to wellbeing in schools and municipalities. 2.00 - 2.15 pm Ignite: Gilda Scarfe - The importance of building Mental Toughness in EducationNow, more than ever the provision of treatment to young people with mental disorders poses a great economic burden for society. Recognizing these issues, a number of researchers have contended that it is better to promote the development of resilient functioning as early as possible in the course of development than to implement intervention strategies. Mental Toughness in the education sector has emerged as a highly significant factor in the development of young people. The key challenges they face and what they can do about them, particularly when approaching exams or test. I will introduce an educational programme concerned with identifying, measuring and developing personal ‘resilience’ in young people. From the outset of our research we used a loose definition of the term ‘resilience’ which made sense both to the teachers and students we were working with; we referred to ‘independence, mental toughness, emotional resilience and intellectual courage’ as the personal qualities which are the essential components of personal resilience. The programme was delivered to groups of 12-15-year-old students in several secondary schools in the UK, whilst we closely monitored the introduction, delivery and outcomes in two case study schools. 2.15. - 2.30 pm Ignite Supporter

2.30 - 3.00 pm Keynote: Steve Leventhal – A Call to Action: Positive Education for Vulnerable Youth in Low and Lower-Middle Income Countries in the time of COVID-19According to a recent United Nations report, the COVID-19 pandemic has created the largest disruption of education systems in history, aecting nearly 1.6 billion learners in over 190 countries, and impacting up to 99 percent of the student population in low and lower-middle income countries (LMICs; United Nations, 2020). Threats to the safety, wellbeing, economic security, health, nutrition and education of youth, particularly girls, in LMICs are already increasing rapidly and will likely continue even after the crisis has abated--potentially erasing decades of progress and exacerbating pre-existing disparities. What role does positive education have to play in supporting the resilience and wellbeing of students and teachers during COVID-19 and beyond in LMICs? This keynote discusses our obligation as leaders, practitioners, and researchers to respond to the crisis and describes concrete steps that can be taken to ensure that positive education contributes both to alleviating the suering of vulnerable students now, and to building skills and supports they can utilize in the future. Weaving insights from a CorStone study of teacher experiences during COVID-19 in India, as well as previewing a remotely-delivered positive education program that can be accessible to vulnerable youth in LMICs, this talk aims to provide a vision of the potential of positive education beyond the WEIRD populations the field has traditionally served (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic; Henrich, Heine, & Norenzayan, 2010). 3.00 - 3.30 pm Panel Discussion: Developing a Culture of Thriving in Schools: Larry Steinberg, Roy Baumeister, Karen Reivich. Facilitated by Dominic RandlophThis panel presentation and discussion will look at new research and insights on how school cultures can support student thriving. The panel will consist of short individual presentations with a brief group discussion. We hope that there will be ideas that will prompt an evaluation of school cultures and some ideas that could be translated into action by practitioners. 3.25 - 3.30 pm Break 3.30 - 3.45 pm Ignite: Abdulla Al Karam - More than a SchoolThis pandemic has closed schools around the world, and at the same time, it’s opened them up to be so much more. After months of distance learning, we’ve realised that the building our children used to enter each day was much more than a school, and what they got there was much more than an education. As they start returning to school, students and teachers are not talking about tests or grades, but about belonging and connecting. In this session, Dr Abdulla will talk about what this pandemic has revealed about the role and purpose of schools in Dubai, and the role and purpose of wellbeing in our lives, wherever in the world we may be.

3.45 - 4.00 pm Ignite: Elke Paul - Time to scale up Positive Education: greater scope, better access, higher impactThe Positive Education movement oers compelling answers to pressing education and societal questions raised by the unprecedented challenges we face today. The IPEN double helix suggests an equilibrium between character and cognitive education. To realize thisvision requires a broader, cross-disciplinary approach to human advancement:• Greater Scope: promote convergence of Positive Education with change agency and the competencies needed in the 21st century to create more powerful tools• Better Access: embrace transformational technologies so that more educators and students can profit from Positive Education thinking and materials
