Why do we pray for the dead?

T he earliest Scriptural reference to prayers for the dead comes in the second book of Maccabees. The books of Maccabees were among the latest written books found

in the Old Testament. They recount the struggle of the Jewish people for freedom against the Seleucid Empire, around 100-200 years before the birth of Christ. The second book of Maccabees tells how Judas Maccabee, the Jewish leader, led his troops into battle in 163 B.C. When the battle ended he directed that the bodies of those Jews who had died be buried. As soldiers prepared their slain comrades for burial, they discovered that each was wearing an amulet taken as booty from a pagan Temple. This violated the law of Deuteronomy and so Judas and his soldiers prayed that God would forgive the sin these men had committed (II Maccabees 12:39-45).

This is the first indication in the Bible of a belief that prayers offered by the living can help to free the dead from any sin that would separate them from God in the life to come. It is echoed in the New Testament when Paul offers a prayer for a man named Onesiphorus who had died: “May the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day” (II Timothy 1:18). The cave-like tombs under the city of Rome, which we call catacombs, bear evidence that members of the Roman Christian community gathered there to pray for their fellow followers of Christ who lay buried there. By the fourth century prayers for the dead are mentioned in Christian literature as though they were already a longstanding custom.

The practice of praying for the dead is rooted first in Christian belief in the everlasting life promised in Jesus’ teachings and foreshadowed by his disciple’s experience that God had raised him from the dead. After death, even though separated from our earthly body, we yet continue a personal existence. It is as living persons that God invites us into a relationship whose life transcends death.

Praying for the dead has further origins in our belief in the communion of saints. Members of this community who are living often assist each other in faith by prayers and other forms of spiritual support. Christians who have died continue to be members of the communion of saints. We believe that we can assist them by our prayers, and they can assist us by theirs.

Our prayers for the dead begin at the moment of death. Often family members will gather in prayer around the bedside of the person who has died. The Order of Christian Funerals includes a Vigil Service for the deceased, which can be held in the home or in a funeral home chapel, the funeral Mass and the Rite of Committal (which generally takes place at the burial site). The prayers express hope that God will free the person who has died from any burden of sin and prepare a place for him or her in heaven. Death remains a mystery for us–a great unknown. Yet Christian language evokes a hopeful imagination in the presence of death, an assurance that our love, linked to Christ’s love, can help bridge whatever barriers might keep those whom we love from fully enjoying the presence of a loving and life-giving God.

Należą do nich: modlitwa różańcowa, nabożeństwo Drogi Krzyżowej, półgodzinne czytanie Pisma Świętego połączone z rozważaniem tekstu, półgodzinna Adoracja Najświętszego Sakramentu, odmówienie Koronki do Bożego Miłosierdzia w kościele lub kaplicy. Pomoc zmarłym to wyraz naszej względem nich solidarności i miłości.

Catholic Teachings – Know Your Faith

Baptism

The Sacrament of Baptism is often called "The door of the Church," because it is the first of the seven sacra-ments not only in time (since most Catholics receive it as infants) but in priority since the reception of the oth-er sacraments depends on it. It is the first of the three Sacraments of Initiation, the other two being the Sacra-ment of Confirmation and the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Once baptized, a person becomes a member of the Church. Traditionally, the rite (or ceremony) of baptism was held outside the doors of the main part of the church, to signify this fact. The Necessity of Baptism Christ Himself ordered His disciples to preach the Gospel to all nations and to baptize those who accept the message of the Gospel. In His encounter with Nicodemus (John 3:1-21), Christ made it clear that baptism was necessary for salvation: "Amen, amen I say to thee unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God." For Catholics, the sacrament is not a mere formality; it is the very mark of a Christian because it brings us into a new life in Christ. The Effects of the Sacrament of Baptism Baptism has six primary effects, which are all supernatural graces: • The removal of the guilt of both Original Sin (the sin imparted to all mankind by the Fall of Adam and Eve in the

Garden of Eden) and personal sin (the sins that we have committed ourselves). • The remission of all punishment that we owe because of sin, both temporal (in this world and in Purgatory) and eter-

nal (the punishment that we would suffer in hell). • The infusion of grace in the form of sanctifying grace (the life of God within us); the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit;

and the three theological virtues. • Becoming a part of Christ. • Becoming a part of the Church, which is the Mystical Body of Christ on earth. • Enabling participation in the sacraments, the priesthood of all believers, and the growth in grace.

The Form of the Sacrament of Baptism While the Church has an extended rite of Baptism which is normally celebrated, which includes roles for both parents and godparents, the essentials of that rite are two: the pouring of water over the head of the person to be baptized (or the immersion of the person in water); and the words "I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." The Minister of the Sacrament of Baptism Since the form of baptism requires just the water and the words, the sacrament, like the Sacrament of Mar-riage, does not require a priest; any baptized person can baptize another. In fact, when the life of a person is in danger, even a non-baptized person—including someone who does not himself believe in Christ—can baptize, provided that the person performing the baptism follows the form of baptism and intends, by the baptism, to do what the Church does—in other words, to bring the person being baptized into the fullness of the Church. In certain cases where a baptism has been performed by an extraordinary minister—that is, someone other than a priest, the ordinary minister of the sacrament—a priest may later perform a conditional baptism. A conditional baptism, however, would only be performed if there were grave doubt about the validity of the original application of the sacrament—for instance, if a nontrinitarian formula were used, or if the baptism had been performed by a non-baptized person who later admitted that he did not have the proper intention. A conditional baptism is not a "rebaptism"; the sacrament can only be received once. And a conditional bap-tism cannot be performed for any reason other than grave doubt about the validity of the original applica-tion—for instance, if a valid baptism has been performed, a priest cannot perform a conditional baptism so that family and friends can be present. What Makes a Baptism Valid? As discussed above, the form of the Sacrament of Baptism has two essential elements: the pouring of water over the head of the person to be baptized (or the immersion of the person in water); and the words "I baptize

you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." In addition to these two essential elements, however, the person performing the baptism must intend what the Catholic Church intends in order for the baptism to be valid. In other words, when he baptizes "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit," he m ust m ean in the nam e of the Trinity, and he m ust intend to br ing the person being baptized into the fullness of the Church. Does the Catholic Church Consider Non-Catholic Baptisms Valid? If both the elements of a baptism and the intention with which it is performed are present, the Catholic Church considers that baptism to be valid, no matter who performed the baptism. Since Eastern Orthodox and Protestant Christians meet the two essential elements in their form of baptism as well as have the proper intention, their baptisms are considered valid by the Catholic Church. On the other hand, while members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (commonly called "Mormons") refer to themselves as Christians, they do not believe the same thing that Catholics, Orthodox, and Protestants believe about the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Rather than believing that these are Three Persons in One God (the Trinity), the LDS Church teaches that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are three separate deities. Therefore, the Catholic Church has declared that LDS baptism is not valid, because Mormons, when they baptize "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit," do not intend what Christians intend—that is, they do not intend to baptize in the name of the Trinity. Infant Baptism In the Catholic Church today, baptism is most commonly administered to infants. While some other Chris-tians strenuously object to infant baptism, believing that baptism requires assent on the part of the person being baptized, the Eastern Orthodox, Anglicans, Lutherans, and other mainline Protestants also practice in-fant baptism, and there is evidence that it was practiced from the earliest days of the Church. Since baptism removes both the guilt and the punishment due to Original Sin, delaying baptism until a child can understand the sacrament may put the child's salvation in danger, should he die unbaptized. Adult Baptism Adult converts to Catholicism also receive the sacrament, unless they have already received a Christian bap-tism. (If there is any doubt about whether an adult has already been baptized, the priest will perform a condi-tional baptism.) A person can only be baptized once as a Christian—if, say, he was baptized as a Lutheran, he cannot be "re-baptized" when he converts to Catholicism. While an adult can be baptized after proper instruction in the Faith, adult baptism normally occurs today as part of the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) and is immediately followed by Confirmation and Communion. Baptism of Desire While the Church has always taught that baptism is necessary for salvation, that doesn't mean that only those who have been formally baptized can be saved. From very early on, the Church recognized that there are two other types of baptism besides the baptism of water. The baptism of desire applies both to those who, while wishing to be baptized, die before receiving the sacra-ment and "Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ or His Church, but who nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart, and, moved by grace, try in their actions to do His will as they know it through the dictates of conscience" (Constitution on the Church, Second Vatican Council). Baptism of Blood The baptism of blood is similar to the baptism of desire. It refers to the martyrdom of those believers who were killed for the faith before they had a chance to be baptized. This was a common occurrence in the early centuries of the Church, but also in later times in missionary lands. Like the baptism of desire, the baptism of blood has the same effects as the baptism of water. Scott P. Richert - Our Sunday Visitor
