Good News Is Arrived!!! I would like to first say thank you to all of you who have been very patient with my weekly allusions as to how the Archdiocese is going to help out our parish to live, survive, and thrive in the years ahead. I believe in a system that says I should give out good news in its entirety – not little bits at a time. Some people may not believe that the Archdiocese really wants St. Lawrence O’Toole to even have a future. Well, here is how I know they do and I hope you will truly listen. We have had an advocate from the Archdiocese who has been working on our behalf to come up with a plan for our future, a plan which has SLOT being a visible and vibrant parish for many years to come. Therefore, here are the basics to that plan. The Archdiocese wants all parishes to be truly self-sufficient in the future, i.e. that parishes receive $0 in aid for regular operations. They are certainly aware that that will not happen overnight. They have given us a target goal of being self-sufficient by fiscal year 2018. Now that is three years of time. They would like to see us have a consistent growth in our everyday operations, especially in terms of increasing revenue. And even though that means we need to continue to work at our Sunday collections, I think that is an area where we need to maintain where we are. We do have many people in our parish who are on fixed incomes and that means I would not expect increases from those families. Others certainly can increase their offerings. However, that also means that we need to find other ways to increase revenue. Of course we are trying to rent out our school space. We are also trying to find ways to raise funds thru different events. One time when I asked Bishop Perry about fundraisers and what a parish should be able to raise (even if not all at once), he said about an average of $25,000 per year. With all of that being said, if we are able to get to being self-sufficient by fiscal year 2018, the Archdiocese will cut our debts down to $300,000 (down from nearly a seven-figure total debt). Now, to me, that is good news. The extra trick that the Archdiocese wants to see from us is to maintain our $0 aid for another three years (thru 2021) after we reach our goal. One way that they are helping us even more immediately is that with our current debt, the Archdiocesan Bank is not going to be charging us any more interest on our loans for the next SIX YEARS! Loans from the Archdiocesan Bank have happened at the parish level usually by the end of June of each year. They might include payroll loans, assessments, or capital advancements. Just imagine, like any other bank, if you borrow, you normally pay interest on them after a certain amount of time. That is what is stopping immediately. That also means that thru that generous part of the overall plan, the Arch is already saving us approximately $90,000 per year. It really makes a lot of sense. We can’t give them what we don’t have. That is why we need to really concentrate on what we do down here. Our second collections won’t stop because there is still a global Church that needs us, too. The Archdiocesan Appeal won’t stop because we are not here to ONLY help ourselves. However, we need to think differently, too. Monies you may have given to the Debt Reduction Fund or even those who still give to the now defunct School Investment Fund should be allocated to our regular Sunday and Holy Day collections. We know people only have so much discretionary money, but I need you to pray about how you might change your thinking to help this plan come to fruition. One thought I learned from an old friend from my days at Holy Name Cathedral is to include our parish in your will or estate. It’s not about depriving your nuclear family, but instead realizing that your gift to your parish is your way of saying that you want the parish to continue for many years to come. I realize that is a lot to think about. It is for me, too. My brain is already trying to think 4-6 years down the road. I ask you to do the same. Together, we can keep O’Toole alive and well for generations to come. Peace and Hope, Rev. Michael Novick

That our weekly bulletin will soon begin a weekly column of St. Lawrence O’Toole facts, figures, history, quotes, and “stuff” you have probably never thought about or thought about but didn’t know where to find the answer. We hope that this column will provide interesting reading with some fun tidbits of information from time to time! First Did You Know: There are 300 white crosses currently displayed on our campus, on Governors Highway by the O’Toole sign. These crosses are a visible reminder of the babies lost to abortion everyday in our country, indeed, in our world! These crosses were purchased by our Respect Life Committee, through the generosity of you, our O’Toole parishioners. These crosses were installed on September 12, the Day of Remembrance for Aborted Babies and will stay up through the entire month of October—Respect Life Month. The Respect Life Committee also invites all parishioners to come to our sidewalk vigils, every Saturday in October, from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM. We will provide signs, so please do not bring signs. Please join us for this peaceful witness and silent prayer. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"If you are looking for an easy and meaningful gift, Fr. Mike Novick, pastor at Saint Lawrence O’Toole, has published his first book “We Don’t Live

in Eden (But we can once again, Believe Me).” Delores Madelener, a reporter at the Catholic New World newspaper, recently reviewed Fr. Mike’s book and says “Father calls it a book, but for me it was an 83-page personal memoir…It’s like he knows you and wants you to know him.” She later says “The most surprising part of the book is the dozen pages of Novick’s original poetry.” Many have already enjoyed it. Share some light reading with someone you love!" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

October 4-Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time: In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples, “Let the

children come to Me for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” This week, please help the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to bring the love and mercy of Jesus to children who are hungry and cold. Unfortunately, We are no longer able to accept donations of clothing at our St. Lawrence O’Toole Pantry. If you have donations of clothing, please take it to the St. Vincent de Paul store

located at 7010 W. 159th St., Orland Park. If you have donations of furniture, please call 773-779-6700 to make arrangements. God Bless You! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We will, again, be collecting diapers for SWADDLE the weekend

of October 24 & 25. Few people are aware of the

"Diaper Gap" that exists in the United States. Needy families cannot purchase disposable diapers with most government assistance like food stamps and WIC. Day care centers require a full day's supply of disposable diapers for parents to leave their babies so they can work. Cloth diapers are not allowed in day care centers and most families in need do not have their own laundry facilities and commercial facilities do not allow cloth diapers to be

washed in their machines. The need for diaper banks is huge.

Last diaper drive St. Lawrence collected over 6000 diapers, we would love to ship over 8000 this time! With your help this is a reachable goal.

COMING NOW!! We have something new and exciting way for all of us to evangelize our community. We will again be selling these car magnets for $5.00 each,

next weekend, October 10 & 11in the Church. This is an easy way to show your O’TOOLE PRIDE, and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ to the world and invite people to come to O’Toole. Look for the table with the

car magnets at the back of church. Any questions, please contact the Parish Office.

The 2015-2016 Religious Education year has begun. We are still happily welcoming new families and students to our program. Classes for

grades 1-8 take place on Mondays, 5:30-6:45 PM. Sacrament preparation for First Reconciliation and Communion begins in grade 1 and continues with reception of these sacraments in grade 2. It is a consecutive two year preparation. Confirmation preparation is a consecutive and concentrated program of instruction in grades 6, 7 and 8. Confirmation

instruction assumes that students have continued religious education formation in grades 3, 4 and 5 following First Communion. We are hoping to welcome many more students to our program this year. We welcome any questions or concerns you may have. If more information is needed, please call us at the Parish Office.

Living Stewardship

“In his use of things man should regard

the external goods he legitimately owns not merely as exclusive to himself but common to others also, in the sense that

they can benefit others as well as himself.”

-Vatican II, Modern World, 69 PRAYER OF ST. IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA

Take. Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding and my entire will, all I have and call my own. You have given all to me. To you, Lord, I return it.

Everything is yours; do with it what you will. Give me only your love and your grace; that is enough for me. PLANNED GIVING Remember St. Lawrence O’Toole in your estate plans. St. Lawrence O’Toole has been blessed over the years to have received some

generous gifts from parishioners and friends who have included our parish in their estate plans. If you would like to include SLOT in your plans, please contact the Parish Office.

A Prayer for Those Serving in the Military

Lord, Hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the

selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. We ask this in the name of Jesus, Our Lord and Savior. Amen

If there are parishioners currently serving in the United States military, we would like to know. Please contact the

Parish Office @ 748-6090 x100 or [email protected], and let us know the name of your dear one and they will be remembered in the prayers

of our community and the name posted in the bulletin. Please indicate branch of service and rank.

. Reflecting on God’s Word Of all the events and circumstances that draw people together, it would seem that marriage is the most universal and obvious manifestation of that longing to be one. Though some may sacrifice marriage for what they deem to be a greater good or

need, and others may never find their heart’s way to that dream, all of us long to be touched by the magic of committed love. There is something woven into the warp and woof of our lives that passionately searches for it. More than anything, it is the ideal of marital love that reveals what we are meant to be—all of life and love so united to one another that there is nothing to divide, since there is no longer anything but pure oneness. Then we are no longer two simply because we are one, one flesh. That is what makes divorce such a sadness, such a personal and even communal tragedy—that it shatters the vision of what we are meant to be. That is also why it causes such pain, such a wrenching; for if marriage fails, might not then also God’s

dream of who we shall be? That seems to be too unbearable even to dare consider. Into such fragile human becoming, then, comes the Lord Jesus, among the married and the divorced, among the sad and the joyful, among the lost and the hopeful, into what we are no matter what we are. He is the most profound and transforming revelation of that unity to which we are called simply because he unites and embodies both the human and the divine in such a way that it can never again be alienated. —Rev. Joseph J. Juknialis Copyright © 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Living God’s Word It is the Lord Jesus who is God’s radical commitment to creation and to the human race. In him the human has become divine and the divine has become human. In spite of our own sinfulness all is becoming one. In Jesus the journey has begun. Copyright © 2014, World Library Publications.
