This is the season of the year when the priests of the Diocese go on retreat, obeying a requirement of Canon Law (the law of the Church) which states thatpriests “have a special obligation to seek holiness in their lives, because they are

consecrated to God by a new title through the reception of orders, and arestewards of the mysteries of God in the service of his people” (Canon 276). It isa mistake for a priest to work so hard at his parish duties that he has no time topray or pursue other means of spiritual development for himself! In some placespriests are free to go to any suitable place for their retreat but in Orlando, with somany new priests from outside the Diocese, the Bishop encourages us to gather atthe San Pedro Centre to help us get to know each other better. I will be at SanPedro from Monday afternoon to Friday morning this coming week and FatherAlvaro will be there next week for the retreat given in Spanish.

I actually get an additional mini-retreat every year when I visit my formermonastery in England. The rhythm of the day, punctuated by six times of worshipin the abbey church (starting at 6:00 am and ending at 8:00 pm), the silenceand the support of the community are always beneficial, helping me to slow downand concentrate on God. When I was there in July this year I read a book onCarmelite spirituality and came across some words of Saint John of the Cross, stanzas 28 and 29 of his Spiritual Canticle, which depict a shepherd leaving hisflock to pursue the one he loves - only this love is not a girlfriend but God, thegreat love of all our lives.

My soul is occupied,And all my substance in His service; Now I guard no flock,Nor have I any other employment:My sole occupation is love.

If, then, on the common landI am no longer seen or found,You will say that I am lost; That, being enamored,I lost myself; and yet was found.

This week I will leave my flock and you will not see me “on the common land”,but please pray for me, for Father Alvaro and the priests of the Diocese in theseweeks as we seek God and once again find a sense of our vocation to love Godand serve His people.
