  • SCVCS Student Spotlight: Bailey Kuntz Bailey Kuntz has been riding horses since she was three years old and now that

practice has paid off. She recently qualified for the Junior Nationals Final Rodeo in Iowa,

something for which every rider does not qualify. She qualified by finishing fourth in the

state in barrel racing. When asked how she became interested in riding horses and com-

peting in rodeos she said, I have been riding horses since I was 3 years old. My dad grew

up riding and training horses and my mom grew up raising cattle. It just came naturally to

    me.

Bailey explained that riding horses and participating in rodeo events gives her some-

thing to do in her spare time, travel a lot, and gives her a chance to always set new

goals. She tries to get other teens involved by using social media and talking to them

face to face. She went on to explain what she enjoys best about her hobby, I enjoy

making new friends and building my relationship with God! Rodeo and horses fit my life-

style. Even when Im having a bad day my horses are always there for me. I cant think of

anything I would change. I love everything about horses and rodeo, even the physically

hard chores that come with taking care of my horses. We can clearly see that Bailey re-

ally enjoys everything about horses and rodeo.

Bailey gives five tips for people who are just starting to ride horses and thinking about

getting involved in rodeo events. She said, (1)Learn how to ride correctly! Get lessons

from a knowledgeable trainer! (2) NEVER GIVE UP! You will have hard times but with, a lit-

tle bit of try, belief in yourself, a lot of practice, and prayer you will get through those hard

times! (3)Set a goal for yourself. Once you reach it set a new one. There are countless

ways to improve your riding. You will never stop improving.(4) PRACTICE!!!!! You learn by

practicing! You will never get any better at riding without practice! No matter what disci-

    pline you choose to ride.(5)Never

    let negative comments get you

down. Let that push you to do bet-

ter and prove them wrong. If there

is one thing I have learned, it is to

    surround myself with positive peo-

ple and to have positive thoughts.

    Thanks Bailey for sharing your

    accomplishments and hobby with

    us!!

  • Dylan and Kensley Brandemuehl have been dancing for 14 years. They perform with their ballet school four to six times a year and have also been asked to perform at an Indian culture fair. At an early age they were motivated by family members to dance. They state, Our cousin and his wife are both professional ballet dancers in American Ballet Theatre in New York City and he was our main inspiration when we first started at age 3.

Regarding the pros of their dancing experiences, the girls mention the sense of accomplishment they feel when they are performing on stage. Hearing the applause of 2,000 people once you fin-ish your variation is an indescribable feeling. On the downside, Dylan and Kensley explain that there are dangers involved with being a dancer. If youre not careful, you can seriously injure your-self. Last year, Kensley was out for a total of 6 months with 3 injuries in both of her knees.

As far as preparing for performances is concerned, the girls indicate that they rehearse two to three times a week in the time period leading up to tech week, which is the final week before the show begins. During tech week they rehearse every night for four hours doing full run-throughs of the show that they are performing. Dylan and Kensley have a ritual that they go through on the day of a per-formance. On the days that we have shows, we like to stay in a relatively calm state throughout

the day, listening to music, and take icy cold showers to get our blood flowing. The shows that the sisters are involved with take place in October, December, February, April, and May. The require-ments for the performances are contingent on the show that they are doing. They explain, Normally, you have to be completely healthy and injury-free one month before a show.

To get the word out about performances, the local news channel in Spartanburg generally provides information about upcoming events that Ballet Spartanburg will be producing. The Brandemuehls dance school also does a lot of outreach pro-grams for kids who would not be able to afford to take classes, or have the opportunity to attend a

show. They explain, We do free performances for local elementary schools and sensory sensitive performances for kids with disabilities and for the School for the Deaf and Blind. For example, you can see Dylan as Clara in 2010 for Orangeburg Civic Ballet - http://thetandd.com/news/local/a-

    beautiful-show-orangeburg-civic-ballet-offers-

    seasonal-favorite-dec/article_b916790e-fd92-11df

    -8dcb-001cc4c03286.html

The thing that Dylan and Kensley enjoy most about performing is the sense of freedom they experience when they are dancing. Once you master something, it is the best feeling. If they could change anything regarding their dancing experiences, they would like to alter the competi-tive atmosphere that comes with the sport.

For aspiring dancers just getting started, the

    Brandemuehls have the following recommenda-

tions: Dont give up, believe in yourself, dont let

the successes of the people around you affect

you, stay focused in class, and listen to your

teachers and treat them with utmost respect.
