Brigg and District FreshStart New Age Kurling Competition
The third and final Kurling Competition of the Year was held on Saturday 6 September at Broughton Village Hall. The hosts were Broughton New Age Kurling Club. They are a relatively new group and this was their first time at staging a competition. Many thanks go to them for all their hard work and hospitality with particular thanks to Geoff Kendall for organising the event. Ten teams took part from Barton, Broughton, Elsham, Hibaldstow and Scawby. At the end of the competition Elsham men played Scawby Swans in the final and emerged triumphant!

A Moving Experience
There’s a sign outside our house which says: ‘This house for sale.’ I asked my mummy what it meant and she went rather pale. “We’re going to go away.” She said “to start out life anew.” Through tears I pleaded, “Mummy please can I come too?” “Of course, my little cherub, we wouldn’t leave you here. No one else would want you, so you need have no fear. And when we get a buyer to take this house off our hands we’ll buy ourselves a bungalow close to the golden sands.” I think that perhaps my mummy is being ‘economical with the truth’ and my daddy is behaving like ‘a bear with a sore tooth.’
We’ve sold the house and everything’s on the removal van and I think my darling daddy is a very clever man. He’s not only a teacher and sometimes plays the clown. But he’s got himself a teaching post in a seaside holiday town! I’m sorry to be leaving all the friends I’ve known for years and I must confess it will be hard to hold back all the tears. But I’m really looking forward to my new home in Ullapool yet, sadly, even in Scotland, I still have to attend school! John W. Skipper
He’d visited the estate agent and that’s why he was late which sounds to me as if we’ll finish up on an estate. I heard him tell mummy, as he downed another beer, that he did not think the housing market would pick up this year. I’ve been to Saturday markets, held in the market square, but it must be a whopping market if they sell houses there! Some strangers came today and they brought their little daughter. She looked all around my bedroom and I don’t think she ought-er ‘Cause my bedroom is private and I keep my secrets there. I wish she’d take her beady eyes off my old teddy bear.’

You don't need to be a super singer to participate, a willingness to join in and encourage others to do so is more important. Family Experiences of World Wars Over the past weeks there have been many television references in programmes about the world wars. This has prompted me to add a little more from the last issue. My father was born into a large family living on Ilkley Moor. All the boys in the nearby village of Addingham were sent to the front line and were lost. Coming from a farm and being used to handling horses, his job was to tend to them for the officers. This all happened in Ireland. Of course his experience was not as bad as many others who were actually fighting but nevertheless, still not very pleasant. (see photo right)
These times made my father reluctant for me to do National Service. This of course was nothing compared to the War. The time I spent doing National service proved to be invaluable and stood me in good stead for the rest of my life. Having spent time in Malta and meeting different men from all walks of life, working on the radar system which was very interesting. I made many good friends. Peter Whiteoak

JOHN IN THE MOSLEM WORLD
The pilot said, “Ladies and gentlemen, we are about to land. Please take your seats”. Minutes later the monitor light said “fasten your seat belts”. The plane landed. This was my first visit to Tehran in the Middle-Eastern country of Iran. The Shah of Persia was, at that time, still in power and peace reigned as far as was possible in a Moslem country.
This journey for me and my colleague, Lofty, was about to start. For me it was with some unfamiliar feelings of trepidation. I wasn’t quite sure why I was in the country at all, other than this particular job appeared interesting and the financial arrangements I had negotiated were good. Maybe it would not be for too long a period as I had discussed with my UK contact.
I had a relationship with an American company based in the UK, who had invited me to submit my CV for onward transmission to the Iranian government department of the Oil Service of Iran (O.S.C.O.). A new project was getting under way at an estimated cost of around 30 billion dollars in one of the Iranian oil fields. A research team of two was required to prepare a list of contractors and suppliers, as much as possible from Middle Eastern countries.
This was my and my associate engineer, Lofty’s, first visit to Iran. Iran was a Moslem country and our arrival, of course, had to be on a Friday, their equivalent of a Christian Sunday, and things were indeed different. Loud speakers were emitting religious messages all over the city.
After a few preliminary meetings in Tehran’s government offices and being bossed about by Ki, the attractive young Indian secretary, she announced one morning, “Mr John, it is your turn to go the bakery to purchase the cream buns for the morning coffee break”. As an obedient young man, I did as I was told.
As I was returning with the cream buns, I suddenly heard loud bangs from around me and people all throwing themselves to the ground in safety from the bullets. With all the confused thoughts in my mind, I suddenly felt my body crushed with something thudding into my back and all breath being squeezed from me. Lying there for what seemed an eternity, with my mind in turmoil and screams all around, I suddenly felt wet and for a moment could not fully understand why or what it could be. Amid confused feelings, I thought that I had lost control of my bodily functions and that I had wet myself. However, I just lay there amid the continuing
noise and confusion. Suddenly, quietness came and my mind began to function. I forced the weight from my body which fell to my side and was mortified to find the weight was that of a young teenage girl who was obviously dead from gunshot wounds. I also realised that the dampness I had felt was not mine but blood from the wounds of the girl. The shooting turned out to be (which was apparently a regular occurrence in the capital) a fight between the Shah’s military and the Iranian Communist Party. When I raised this situation with my governmental contact, he assured me that this was fully in hand and of no real consequence. These events and the revolution that followed many months later, gave me many thoughts later in life of how naïve I had been to accept the assurances of my government contacts that all was well and in order. However, that was some time away from the problems that followed later. Leaving Tehran I headed south to Abadan, the city built around one of the largest oil refineries in the country and largely built by the British. There, I set about building up my requirements for the project administration.
30
I employed a dozen surveyors and six secretaries and was somewhat apprehensive as all the documentation was in English. My reservations proved groundless as they proved to be the most competent secretaries I had worked with in a long time. The young Moslem secretaries’ dress surprised me as, far from wearing conventional religious dress, they all had miniskirts and low cut tops. Mini transistor radios hung round their necks continually tuned to pop music being broadcast from Kuwait. More surprises were in store for me. I found the females discussed the Koran and their religion openly, but quietly and discreetly, with me for fear of being overheard by the secret police who were everywhere. It was the males who were openly hostile generally about anything and everything. It was generally only the males that stopped whatever they were doing, no matter where they were, to pray. This was something that appeared strange to the Europeans, although no-one ever interfered. The local golf course had, on a Saturday evening, a dance for Europeans in the area where a meal and alcohol were also served. Although the locals were always welcome, they were quite selective. When I
suggested to the young lady secretaries that I could send cars to pick them up and bring them to the dance and meal, they readily accepted the invitation, to the displeasure of my Arabic translator. As the time went on it became obvious, from the radio bulletins, that matters in the north of the country, in particular the cities, were showing some public unrest against the ruling government but nothing serious was thought of it by either the local employees or the British group. Work continued as normal. There were local problems in respect of obtaining construction materials for the project which came through the docks in Abadan. It was clear from the beginning that local materials in Iran were almost non-existent and would generally have either to come from Europe or the United States and come by ship through the port of Abadan. When materials arrived and were unloaded at the port, problems arose in sorting out the paperwork and finding the correct port official in order to obtain authority to remove the materials by the project’s authorised transport contractor.
It soon became clear that in nearly every instance when materials, plant and equipment were off-loaded and ready for transporting out of the docks, the correct dock clearance official, which was nearly always a different official, had to be discreetly tipped. In one instance two project ambulances were ready for leaving the docks but the appropriate official was never found for a variety of reasons and whilst the contract was up and running, the vehicles never left the docks. Matters of unrest suddenly became much more serious and fighting spread to many parts of the southern cities and in the local city of Abadan. A meeting of project personnel was called and discussed the best way to deal with the situation. It was generally considered, as nothing serious had occurred to any of us and the local employees appeared calm and helpful, that we, as a body, should remain calm and watch and await developments. I and two others were not really happy about this and considered that more positive action was called for. Matters continued for a couple of weeks but the situation, to my mind, did not improve when the local airport closed down and all travel out of Iran officially stopped. Matters came to a head when the radio

announced that the Shah of Persia was about to leave the country and the return of the Ayatollah Khomeini was imminent with the founding of an Islamic Republic. It was then that local supporters of the revolution arrived with fully loaded guns and stated that all foreigners were not now welcome and that all personnel were now confined with no other explanation of what the immediate future held for any of us. They confirmed that the country was now changing to an Islamic Republic and would be fully Moslem. I considered the situation and made up my mind, deciding that it was past time to go. Telling my immediate people what was in my mind, I invited them to join me. I waited my opportunity, jumped into my car and made my way to the Abadan/Iraqi border on the side road that I knew. There was no real difficulty in crossing with the intention of escaping from the problems of the Iranian revolution through Iraq and possibly back to Europe. Very well aware that I had no passport or visas to travel in the manner I intended, I had, what I knew was a good substitute: a wallet full of American dollars that I knew would be required to bribe my way out of the middle-east. The dollars were worth more
than any normal paperwork and did prove to be successful. Crossing over the border into Iraq, I made my way up through Basra and finally reached a degree of safety back in the west and the rest, as they say, is history. John Donaldson.
