Annakut is celebrated on the day after Diwali. In his childhood, Lord Krishna saved Vrindavan from the wrath of Indra by lifting the mount Govardhan. This episode was celebrated by the villagers of Vrindavan with a sumptuous feast and thus began the tradition of Annakut. Srimad Bhagwatam says: - After lifting of the huge Sri Govardhan Parvat for continuous seven days prior to Diwali, the Lord put it back on earth & asked the citizens to worship the mountain. Shri Krishnaji then appeared in two forms. One was in the form of Sri Goverdhan hillock itself, i.e. deity to be worshiped and as second as resident to offer food to Him. After the prayers, traditional worship & Aarti, innumerable varieties of delicious sweets/ all cooking / 56 bhogs were ceremoniously raised in the form of a mountain before the deity as “Bhog” and after Lord had it full , now it was citizens turn to approach the Mountain of Food and take Prasad from it. It was a Great Feast for residents of Goverdhan & they all enjoyed it thoroughly. Thus, this day is also observed as Annakut meaning mountain of food. The devotees offer their gratitude to Lord Krishna for his blessings in making their lives complete. People cook fifty-six or 108 different types of food for the bhog (the offering of food) to Krishna. In temples especially in Mathura and Nathdwara, the deities are given milk bath, dressed in shining attires with ornaments of dazzling diamonds, pearls, rubies and other precious stones. Volunteers can offer neivedya /sweet prepared by them in traditional way for this blessed occasion. Items can be made ahead. Important thing is that you need to make a dish with your own hands and offer to God. Please do remember— No garlic or onions should be used and make any dish that is special to your tradition.
