October 2013

Reformationby Alice Woodard, Director of Worship and LifeGARDEN

At the end of this month, on Saturday and Sunday, October 26 and 27, we will celebrate the Reformation. Two very important things will

happen on this weekend as part of the observance of this great event in the church. During all worship services, over 125 third graders will receive their own personal Bibles. And at special services on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, over 130 tenth graders who have completed their confirmation requirements will participate in services of Affirmation of Baptism.

Two significant milestones in the lives of these young people and in the life of the church. Why do these important things both happen on this one weekend? The reason for this goes back to October 31, 1517,

when a Catholic monk named Martin Luther nailed a notice to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg,

Germany, where he was assistant pastor. The notice was his Ninety-five Theses, points of difference Luther had with

the doctrine and practice of the Catholic church. Meant to be an invitation to discussion, the theses instead sparked

controversy which led, over many years and through many twists and turns, to the Lutheran Reformation.

While the Reformation addressed many issues concerning the Catholic church, two main ideas are central to Lutheran practice and beliefs, and

to our worship at Lord of Life. First is Luther’s deep reverence for scripture. He wrote that scripture is “the work of God, that is, what God does in us, the power of

God, with which he makes us strong, the wisdom of God, with which he makes us wise.” The second is the fundamental belief in the truth of the gospel—the good news that God is loving and merciful, that he offers each and every one of us forgiveness and salvation not because of what we do, but because of what Christ has already done for us. This was a radical departure from Catholic practice at the time and is an important belief not only to Lutherans, but to all Protestants. This gift of life, forgiveness, and salvation is imparted to all Christians at the time of their baptism.

Thus, Luther’s belief in the value of scripture makes Reformation the perfect time for Bibles to be placed in the hands of our third graders, and his emphasis on the gifts received at baptism make it fitting that the Rite of Affirmation of Baptism for our tenth graders takes place on this date. Two milestones, over 255 young people, many blessings!

Welcoming Taylor WilsonTaylor Wilson began his pastoral internship at Lord of Life on

September 1. What is very different about that fact is that Taylor also began life as a student at Luther Seminary on September 1.

The normal path to ordination in the Lutheran church is for a student to do two years of seminary, then do a one-year full time internship and then return to seminary for a fourth year. Taylor and Lord of Life are going to be part of an experiment that has Taylor doing his internship concurrently with taking classes for three years.

What should you know about Taylor? He was baptized at Lake Nokomis Lutheran in Minneapolis and then was confirmed at Grace Lutheran in Apple Valley. He loves sports and played football and basketball at Apple Valley High School.

For the past five years Taylor has been a youth and family minister at Transfiguration Lutheran in Bloomington. He didn’t see himself becoming a pastor but then one of the pastors at his church went on a sabbatical and Taylor was needed to assist at services. He “loved it,” and began to make plans for seminary.

The most important thing to know about Taylor is that he married Lord of Life Youth and Family Minister Julie Hagen on August 23. He described it as a “fantastic day.” (Reminder to everyone, including Julie, the name is now Julie Wilson not Julie Hagen.)

Besides Julie, Taylor’s passion is music and we heard that when he performed the special music in worship on August 11 at Lord of Life. Taylor is a singer-songwriter who has released 3 CDs. He has performed at the Sonshine Music Festival in Willmar and at the ELCA Youth Ministry Extravaganza. You can check out his music on iTunes®. He also plays bass in the band Boiling Point.

Taylor’s favorite band is Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. His favorite TV show is Parks and Recreation and his favorite movie is Anchor Man. If you ask nicely he might quote Will Ferrell’s best lines from the movie.

Taylor dreams of developing a ministry that reaches out to people who don’t come to church. “I am excited to be doing my internship at Lord of Life. Lord of Life is a fabulous church and I see this as a great opportunity to learn, to grow in my faith, and to hang out with my wife.” We did put Taylor and Julie in the same office.

One of our goals at Lord of Life is to be a teaching congregation that creates leaders for the church. Taylor’s internship with us for the next three years is a great opportunity for us to do just that. I encourage you to get to know Taylor and welcome him into the life of our church.

A New Way of Knowingby Pastor Karen Sue Greimel

During the summer months I find a bit more time to read. I accept invitations by numerous authors to lose myself in the pages of their books thus entering a whole, new dwelling place. Because I have a deep longing to know our God

more intimately, I find that prayer is a topic of the utmost importance.

Prayer is God’s invitation to live in the midst of this world without being overwhelmed by it. Like the calm in the eye of a hurricane, prayer is where peace and calm reside even when all else is in a tailspin. Henri Nouwen put it this way, “Prayer points us to a new way of knowing, yes, a whole new way of living, prayer is the center of Christian life…it’s the only necessary thing.” Prayer grounds us. Did you know that the more you pray, the more you want to pray and the deeper your relationship with God becomes? It’s simple, really. God delights in the prayers of His people. Prayer brings order, love, and healing to our lives, and so much more.

Are you struggling with life issues? Are you in need of healing or do you desire to learn more about prayer? Remember, prayer is God’s invitation to live in the midst of this world without being overwhelmed by it.

If you have any questions about Lord of Life’s Prayer School, Healing Ministry or to schedule a prayer appointment please contact Pastor Karen Sue at [email protected] or 763.420.5015 x144. Healing worship services are held monthly in Lord of Life’s Prayer Chapel through May 2014.

Prayer points us to a

new way of knowing,

yes, a whole new

way of living...

Gift of Songby Georgia Helvick

Do you love to sing or play an instrument? We’re looking for soloists/youth groups who like to sing together or play instruments on the third

Sunday of the month during worship at Ambassador Good Samaritan in New Hope. Come sing a song or play an instrument! It doesn’t have to be a monthly commitment—anytime works. We have a monthly worship service for 20+ residents. They’d especially love the added treat of a special song. Please consider sharing your time and talents to make a difference in worship for these residents. Contact Ina Barton at 763.557.6389 if you want to help.

Reason to Celebrateby Michelle Welinski

Think for a moment how beautiful the trees are this fall. The only problem with their beauty is that the leaves soon fall to the ground, and that means work for us—

raking and bagging them up before the snow flies.

In life, there are times of incredible beauty. A new relationship, a new job, a new house just to name a few things. And then comes the “fall” when life may be difficult and messy. The relationship ends, the monthly house payment is difficult to make, a loved one is struggling with an addiction, you have a difficult adult child—and you feel out of control.

Don’t be discouraged. Join the 60+ people who attend Celebrate Recovery each week. While our lives at times may be messy—we do have reason to celebrate! We are not alone in our struggles. Most importantly, Jesus is walking right alongside us. Jesus tells us in John 10:10 “I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.” Don’t just dream of a better life, take your first step at Celebrate Recovery.

Celebrate Recovery meets every Tuesday evening with dinner at 5:45 pm and programming at 6:30 pm. Childcare is available, as well as programming for children age K-6th grade. No registration is needed. Questions? Contact Michelle Welinski at [email protected] or 763.420.5015 x118.

“I just wanted to share with you all that with God’s encouragement I tried something I never had done before and entered a contest for cupcake decorating at the Minnesota State Fair and took 1st place! My first blue ribbon ever! The phrase from the movie HOME RUN keeps ringing in my ears, ‘Nothing great happens when we hold back.’ Thanks to everyone also for all of your wonderful support and encouragement. You give me strength and courage and help deepen my relationship with God. Thank you!”

All Church SurveyLord of Life has agreed to partner with HolyCow! Consulting to

help us assess our current status and guide our decisions for the future. The tool we will use is the Churchwide Assessment Tool

(CAT). This will provide key indicators of our congregational health along with areas of challenge and potential growth. It will help us to collect and understand the range of views that exist at Lord of Life and the possibilities, willingness, and energy for moving ministry into the future.

The CAT is an online assessment (paper copies will be available) which will be available from October 12-31. Our goal is to acquire a minimum of 750 responses. The more responses we receive, the better the resulting information will be. The CAT will ask 100 questions and require up to 30 minutes time to complete. All responses are strictly confidential with no way to identify respondents.

More information will be made available in the very near future. Thank you in advance for your participation!

mobile hope at maple hill estatesIt’s an exciting time of year with school starting and students getting back into the groove of studying and doing homework. Maple Hill Estates, a mobile home park just around the corner from Lord of Life, is once again blessed to have the opportunity to participate in the Homework Help program. It is now going to be offered three days a week to students in all grades who reside at Maple Hill Estates.

The volunteers are from YWAM (Youth With A Mission) in Rockford, Minnesota, Rockford school teachers, and others who are just feeling the call to spend time with kids. We are still in need of volunteers for this Homework Help program. Volunteers are needed on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4-5:30 pm.

To learn more about this opportunity, please contact Polly Trandahl at [email protected]. She will put you in touch with the correct people to get signed up to help. Even if you just have a few days here and there, these kids will greatly benefit!

Dominican Republic Mission Tripby Pastor Dave McCarthy

God’s Work. Our Hands. This can mean a lot of different things. Your hands will be put to use in any number of ways if you

join the One Mission One World Team to the Dominican Republic (DR) this January. Your hands may work alongside a homeowner who has already invested a good deal of work preparing to pour a cement floor in a home that currently has a dirt one. Or you may help build a garden and learn along with a local family how to grow vegetables that will improve nutrition. Or you may help finish the Community Center that supports health care needs, vocational training, family education, medical/dental clinic, and spiritual formation for the entire region. And you will also participate in Kids’ Club at a local school and learn about a new culture by getting to know the local residents while living and working alongside them for a week.

If you are a dental professional, your skills and gifts will be used to provide nonexistent—sometimes lifesaving—dental care for residents as you work alongside the medical and dental teams from the DR who have been faithfully serving in that region for the past three years. The dental team provides treatments ranging from restorations to extractions, impression/insertions of partials, and oral hygiene training for children and parents.

Lord of Life’s adult trip to the Dominican Republic is scheduled for January 18-25 and the dental trip is January 25-February 1. Please contact Pastor Dave McCarty at [email protected] if you have questions or are interested in joining the team.

Tanzania as well as understanding the challenges faced by the people of rural East Africa. You will be filled with the Spirit as you share in worship services, enjoy the beautiful songs of the community and see God’s amazing creation on a short safari into Ruaha National Park. The next One Mission One World:  Tanzania trip will be June 14-28, 2014. To learn more contact Marty Sager at [email protected] or send an email to [email protected].

Third Graders’ Special EventsThird graders have very special events coming up in October.

The first event is October 12/13. The Bible Learning Event happens in Fellowship Hall at their regular Church School

time. This event leads students and their parents through the new Adventure Bible that they will soon receive.

On Saturday, October 26, and Sunday, October 27, at the time they are registered for Church School, third graders receive their own copies of the Adventure Bible. Children check in at a kiosk and go with their parents to Fellowship Hall. Their parents then go to worship and save a place for their children. Third graders enter the sanctuary as a group and their parents will be asked to come and stand behind them. In order to help parents fulfill the baptismal promises they made to their children, parents will be given their child’s Bible to place into their hands. After the presentation, children return to their seats with their parents and continue worshipping.

These are exciting milestones in the lives of third graders. Please pray for the third graders and their families as they study God’s word in the Bible and the important messages it contains.

Last year, Kirk & Leo Olson had a great time during Lord of Life’s Kalahari Family Retreat in the Wisconsin Dells. This year’s retreat is on

November 8-10; details & registration are at lordoflife.org/family retreat.

October Book Pick

How Full is Your Bucket? For Kids by Tom Rath and Mary Reckmeyer A good, kind, and gracious attitude can fill you up!

We Did It!Children who attended summer programming at Lord of Life

were called to do God’s work with their hands. Their gift of over $4,800 is making a huge impact on the lives of as many

as 1,000 families, providing two clean water wells for people who lack access to clean water.

Water is a basic necessity of life. When a community constructs and maintains a water well a world of opportunity opens up. As many as 500 families gain access to clean, safe drinking water. People no longer thirst. As a result of better sanitation, they are healthier and stronger. And best of all, women and children who used to walk at least three miles each day for water can now use their time for school, work, and family.

A huge note of thanks goes to these generous Lord of Life children and their families for carrying God’s love to others and making a difference in their lives and in the world.

helping kids cope with living in a violent worldJoin other parents and children as we talk about the violence in media, our community, and around the world. This event takes place at Lord of Life on Sunday, November 3 from 3:30-5 pm. Optional Pizza Plus! dinner (pizza and salad at $3 per person) will be served from 5-6 pm. Signing up ahead of time at lordoflife.org/gff will help us have enough food for all. Thank you. Th

1978 Lord of Life Lutheran Church Charter (ELCA)

Lord of Life is a community of people called together by God’s Holy Spirit who confess Christ as Lord. We wish to be a church whose door is open to all people. And with the guidance of the Holy Spirit we will strive to educate, comfort, aid and spread the word of love in Christ’s name. We believe worship is of most importance in our life together as we receive God’s love through Word and Sacrament. We will be involved with seeking justice in our community, state, nation, and world. We hold high the dignity and worth of every human being as created in God’s image and forgiven in Christ. We hope to be a serving church, in the name of Him who came as Servant of all.

Offered in both Session 2 (Sundays at 11 am) and Session 3 (Tuesdays at 6:45 pm)—

L5 Class: Being a Member of Lord of Life As introduced in August’s LifeTIMES, this L5 class is for those interested in

membership at Lord of Life and those who are already members, but want to explore more fully what being a member of Lord of Life can mean. All of our

pastors are involved in teaching this class, so it also gives an opportunity to get to know each pastor better.

October 27 (Session 2) / January 14 (Session 3) – “Being a Lutheran” Pastor Karen Geisendorfer-Lindgren will talk about the basics of Lutheranism including the Reformation, key points of Lutheran Doctrine, the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America), and Ecumenism.

November 3 (Session 2) / January 21 (Session 3) – “Lifelong Faith Development” Pastor Todd Buegler will describe the Lutheran understanding of the Word and Sacraments and how our faith walk is a lifelong experience.

November 10 (Session 2) / January 28 (Session 3) – “Expectations of Membership” Pastor Peter Geisendorfer-Lindgren will share the history of Lord of Life, and what it means to be a member of our congregation.

November 17 (Session 2) / February 4 (Session 3) – “The Journey Inward and the Journey Outward” Pastor Karen Sue Greimel and Pastor Dave McCarty will team up for this session to talk about the way the nurturing of our inner spiritual lives is connected to reaching out in mission and service to the world.

November 24 (Session 2) / February 11 (Session 3) – “Using Your God-given Gifts” Pastor David Lippitt will help us understand the unique gifts God has given each one of us and how we can best use those gifts in ways that are personally meaningful and bless those around us.

For all L5 class descriptions, schedules, and brief bios of those teaching, visit lordoflife.org/L5 or stop by the bulletin board in the main hallway for an August issue of LifeTIMES.
