BSC Science Center Boon for Region

TheMassachusetts StateSenate and Houseof Representativeslast spring madegood on their prom-ise to place new

emphasis on public higher educa-tion by restoring $41 million of sys-tem-wide funding. This infusion ofresources has already begun pay-ing dividends in the form of small-er class sizes, additional courseofferings, new faculty hiring andthe stabilization of student charges.

This past summer, GovernorRomney added to the emerginggroundswell of support for publichigher education by recommend-ing $400 million of the state’s budget surplus be directed towardsneeded capital improvements atour institutions.

As leaders on Beacon Hill consider this historic bill, it isimportant that the citizens ofSoutheastern Massachusetts graspall that would be gained locally byits passage. Included in the proposal is $91.5 million for projects in the region, $60 millionof which has been earmarked for anew integrated science facility atBridgewater State College.

When BSC’s Conant ScienceCenter opened in 1964, it wasdesigned for a campus of 800 full-time students. In contrast, thenew facility would serve a campuscommunity of nearly 10,000 and beequipped with state-of-the-art laboratories and technology.Students and faculty would haveaccess to experiences and researchtools on par with their peers at anyinstitution anywhere.

This building’s constructionwould fundamentally change theway we study science and, equallyimportant, impact our region. While all at Bridgewater StateCollege are committed toimproving the quality and

expanding the scope of the student experience, the complementarymission is to harness the energythat arises naturally from this

pursuit and channel it back into thepublic we serve.

For too long, SoutheasternMassachusetts has lacked the critical foothold it needs for scientific advancement and discovery. As a result, our urban centers – Fall River, New Bedford,Brockton, Taunton and Attleboro –have struggled to attract high-techindustries and transition to the neweconomy.

Employment and incomegrowth throughout Plymouth andBristol counties have lagged behindthe rest of the state and, increasingly, those who represent the best andbrightest of the next generation areleaving the region and commonwealth at an alarming rate.

Equally disturbing is the dwindling supply of new K-12 science teachers as their demandacross the region and state continuesto rise. Add to this a recent report bythe National Center for EducationInformation which predicts that 40percent of all teachers working todaywill retire within five years and thechallenge before us becomes evenmore daunting.

Building an appetite for sciencebegins at an early age. Teachers inprimary and secondary schools havethe power to engender this apprecia-tion, but will only do so if their ownexperiences have been rewarding, enriching and stimulating.

Construction of a new sciencefacility at Bridgewater State Collegewould be the most ambitious building project undertaken by astate college in Massachusetts. Thatstate leaders have proposed such aninvestment in SoutheasternMassachusetts is an indication thatthe region is poised to take hugeleaps forward.

At a time of clamor for moreattention to science education, and amoment in which innovation andthe generation of knowledge havenever been more inextricably linkedto the state’s competitive edge,Southeastern Massachusetts has theopportunity to do what it has sorarely done over the past century – lead our state into thefuture.

There is No “I” in TEAM

There are many valid reasonspeople form partnerships whenthey go into business: a pooling ofmoney, different areas of expertise, and family ties are just three.Often partners are very goodfriends. Regardless of the reasonsand relationships, too often they doNOT prepare adetailed “partnershipagreement”. Theimportance ofhaving such anagreement cannotbe over stated.

“We are such good friends thatthere will never be any problemsbetween us.” Or, “he’s my brother(or sister, cousin or uncle) and weget along just fine and never havearguments. This is heard of oftenat SCORE, but nothing stays thesame forever. Circumstanceschange. People change. Supposeone of your partners gets sick andcan’t work any longer, or dies?Who gets his half of the business -the remaining partner, the spouseand/or the children, or is it out upfor sale? Or suppose one of thepartners wants to retire and sellthe business and the other doesn’t?

And too, let’s not over look thefact that as years go by the partners may have more and morediffering views as to how the business should run so they finallydecide to come to a parting ofways.

A simple welldeveloped partnership agreement canavoid all sorts offuture legal entanglementsand costs. SCOREcounselors are

alert on these, and many other, potential problems faced by businesses. Counseling is free. Please call the Metro SouthChamber of Commerce at508.587.2673 for an appointment.

Lean Concepts: Change in Managementand Hourly WorkforceStory Provided by: MassMEP

Many companies are accelerating their productivitygrowth by implementing Leanconcepts as a way to streamline

their businesses and the ability tocompete. Since Lean, by definition, means CHANGE and requires achange in culture, training in Leanconcepts is required for both management and the hourly workforce in order to produce aneffect on a continuing basis.

Resistance to change, at least inmanufacturing, is ingrained.Manufacturing has been taughtthrough the years to do things in arepetitive fashion in order toachieve uniformity of quality anduniformity of product. This is agood philosophy if there is no competition. However, in today'sglobal economy the competition isfierce. In order to remain competitive, if not viable, a company must embark on a program of continuous improvement. Today, Lean manufacturing concepts and principles are guiding new ways ofthinking about processes andprocess performance. The TimeWise Simulation

TimeWise, Lean 101 is aninteractive workshop that introduces Lean concepts and theLean transformation methodology. This methodology provides a customizable framework for transforming a company into aLean enterprise and prepares theattendees for change.

The TimeWise workshop takesinto consideration both financialand workforce constraints.Participants experience the powerof Lean and the changes and benefits of moving from a

traditional manufacturing processto a Lean manufacturing environment through a simulationworkshop. Attendees learn aboutthe eight wastes in manufacturingand how to apply standardizedwork, workplace organization, visual controls, set-up reduction, batch size reduction, point-of-usestorage, quality at the source, workforce practice, and pull systems to eliminate these wastes.

In addition, TimeWise demonstrates the value of implementing Lean concepts bypreparing net income statementsfor each of the four rounds of simulation. Sales numbers are calculated for each of the threemodels of clocks. Real Success Leads to Value-Add Activities

One of their clients is a manufacturer of a high volumeitem used in over 80% of all vehicles, including automotive, inthe US. Their products are in danger of becoming commodities, and as such, the company is indanger of losing jobs to China. They have responded by trainingall of the almost 300 employees inthe Lean 101 TimeWise Workshop. In parallel with the training, thecompany has undertaken anextensive lean implementationprogram. Among the manyimprovements in metrics, thecompany has freed up over 25%of their existing factory space.

The company plans to use thespace for value-added activities fortheir customers. By moving up thevalue chain, the company willrealize increases in both revenueand profits. But more importantly, the company will insure their longterm viability as an ongoing business, and will not only retainjobs, but will increase the level ofemployment at the plant. GoingLean is a way to succeed andmaintain profits and reduce costs.
