What are the advantages of a career elective at Ocean County Vocational Technical School?• Receive between 10 and 15 elective credits from the home high school per year• Earn college credits to jump start a college education through Tech Prep agreements• Receive a certificate of completion from OCVTS, in addition to various national certifications• Receive assistance with job placement in related fields of employment• Receive scholarship assistance for ‘After-High School’ vocational programs• Receive a $160 voucher for an evening school course upon completion of program

Who should attend Ocean County Vocational Technical School?The Ocean County Vocational Technical School offers career majors in over 30 areas for students going on to college or direct-ly to the world of work. OCVTS works hand-in-hand with sending schools to provide a complete education for high school stu-dents. Students may attend during their junior and senior year, as well as post graduate. The students attend “home school” forhalf a day and are transported to the vocational center for the other half. Ties are maintained with the home school where theypursue academic classes, take part in sports or other extracurricular activities, and graduate. Guidance and career counselingservices are jointly provided by the vocational school and the home school. Students receive a certificate from OCVTS, as wellas a high school diploma from their home school.

Are there prerequisites to apply to Ocean County Vocational Technical School?In order to be enrolled at the Ocean County Vocational Technical School, a student must receive a recommendation fromhis/her counselor. The student should have successfully completed the tenth grade to enter any of the two year courses. Allapplicants interested in Cosmetology, Law and Public Safety and Homeland Security will be required to take an entrance examand acceptance will be based on the results of this exam. Grades and attendance may be reviewed prior to acceptance.Once enrolled at OCVTS, attendance is strictly monitored and directly affects a student’s grade. Poor attendance can impactenrollment status.Additional application forms are available from the home school guidance counselor, the Ocean County Vocational TechnicalSchool Student Services and Admissions Department, and career counselors at each OCVTS center.

What are Applied Academics?The Ocean County Vocational Technical School provides Applied Academics to all students on a weekly basis. AppliedAcademics teachers are highly qualified in the areas of Math and English. Vocational programs are provided academicinstruction in Math and English as it relates to the trade at hand and also support student's success on state standardizedtesting (HSPA). Concepts are delivered and assessed by the Applied Academics teachers and are supported in the shop setting.

What is a Tech Prep Agreement?Tech Prep is short for "Technical Preparation." It is a nationally recognized program which focuses on providing a meaningfuleducation and career preparation for a large number of high school students, whose immediate educational goals followinghigh school include an associate degree at a community college or post secondary institution.The Ocean County Vocational Technical School has embraced the Tech Prep philosophy, expanding it to include both full andpart-time programs. Agreements are in place with more than ten institutions allowing students the opportunity to earn collegecredits. This gives students a jump start on a college education and prevents the duplication of course work at the college level.The following programs offer Tech Prep opportunities:

Audio for Electronic Media (Tech Prep)2 years/900 hours LakehurstThis program combines both art and science in a field that requires specialized tech-nical knowledge. Students will be guided through the process of capturing sound(audio) and storing it in both the digital and analog mediums for reproduction. Studentswill learn recording technology through classroom instruction and application of thesetechniques using professional recording equipment at the school's multiple studiorecording facility. The program will be taught by professionals from the recording indus-try through real recording sessions with artists from many musical genres includingcommercials and voice over production. Curriculum content will cover the following:multimedia production, physics of sound, acoustics, multi-track recording/digital audiotechnology, Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) and musical instrument tech-nology, design and application of microphones, computer digital editing and master-ing, the audio production console, signal processors, audio for visual production andpost production, the music business and sound reinforcement (concert sound). Astrong foundation in math and science, as well as a pre-admission interview withinstructors, is recommended for candidates pursuing enrollment. A Tech Prep agreement with Ocean County College has been established to providestudents with an opportunity to earn advanced college credits upon successfulcompletion of this program.Recommended Skills: Strong science and math skills recommended. Design and Visual Communications (Tech Prep)2 years/900 hours BrickThe Design and Visual Communications Career Cluster emphasizes preparation forboth employment and continuing education at a post high school institution, while offer-ing Tech Prep agreements for possible college credit upon examination or portfolioreview. Secondary students traditionally attend for a 2-1/2 hour session per day whilethe second part of their day they complete academic requirements at their sending highschool. After high school, students have the option to attend full-time, two sessions perday, for an intensive completion of the program in a single year. Students select fromthree component career areas within this career cluster program. The Design andVisual Communications Career Cluster consists of eleven ten-week courses. Thesecourses consist of both conventional and digital skill competencies to assure graduatesare competitive in a wide variety of design and visual communication careers withinthis far-reaching industry.The Multimedia Component covers the creation of digital art for print, video and elec-tronic media. This component of the program includes courses in: Digital Art andDesign, Animation and Multimedia, Web Design and Video Production.The Photography Component covers the techniques of traditional and digital pho-tography highlighting skills required in advertising, portraiture, multimedia and fine art.This component of the program includes courses in: Digital Photography, MultimediaPhotography, Film and Darkroom Photography, and Studio Lighting.The Digital Reproduction Component emphasizes the use of current technologiesin both conventional printing and digital reproduction. This component of the programincludes courses in: Design and Reproduction, Screen Printing, and ProductionGraphics.Tech Prep agreements with the Ocean County College, Boston University Center forDigital Imaging Arts, Antonelli Institute and the Art Institute of Philadelphia have beenestablished to provide students with opportunities to earn advanced collegecredits/placement upon successful completion of this program.

Architectural/Engineering Design (Tech Prep)2 years/900 hours BrickThis course is for high school and high school graduates interested in architectural,mechanical, and civil engineering careers. Skills for drafting and design of architectur-al, civil engineering, and mechanical components are emphasized. Mechanical andresidential drafting are stressed in the first year. The second year concentrates ondrafting and design of residential structures, and civil engineering. Hand draftingmethods and Computer Aided Drafting/Design (CADD) technologies are utilized.Tech Prep agreements with the Ocean County College and Mercer County Collegehave been established to provide students with opportunities to earn advanced collegecredits/placement upon successful completion of this program.Recommended Skills: Basic computer skills, strong math and language skills. GoodAttendance. Basic drafting experience a plus.

Computer Service Repair 1 year/450 hours Toms RiverThis program is a survey course designed to prepare students with a diversified com-puter and electronic background. The goal is to supply the necessary information need-ed to prepare students to make educational decisions in pursuing computer or otherrelated technology careers. The student will learn the theory of operation, assembly,and troubleshooting of modern computers. The course targets entry level skills leadingto a career in the computer service market. Recommended Skills: Strong math and science skills are recommended.

Computer Science (Tech Prep)2 years/900 hours Toms RiverThis course provides students with opportunities for advanced studies in informationtechnology. The program is open to students who plan on pursuing college degrees inpreparation for careers as system engineers, computer programmers, information tech-nology managers or other technology related specialties. Topics covered in the courseinclude: introduction to information systems and computer applications, introduction toproblem solving and program design, Internet organization and applications, object ori-ented design and programming using Visual BASIC, and Java, and web site design anddevelopment using HTML, JavaScript, and PHP. The course may include internshipswith area businesses. Multimedia applications, high speed Internet access, and state-of-the-art equipment and technology are available to students.A Tech Prep agreement with Ocean County College has been established to providestudents with an opportunity to earn advanced college credit upon successfulcompletion of this program.Recommended Skills: Familiarity with desktop computers, standard desktopapplications like Word and Excel, and the Internet.

Construction Trades

Health TechnologiesDental Assisting 1 year/450 hours Toms RiverThis program teaches four-handed dentistry and lab skills, prevention techniques, oper-ative treatment, and specialty areas. A clinical experience in a dental office is a requiredpart of the program. Students must provide transportation to the clinical site. Thecourse provides preparation for students interested in dental careers such as dentalhygienist, lab technician, x-ray technician, and dentist, as well as for those interestedin immediate employment as a dental assistant. Additional certification allows studentsto become certified or registered assistants licensed to perform oral procedures underthe supervision of a dentist. High school seniors are given priority for admissions to thiscourse.Recommended skills: Word processing and strong communication skills are recommended.

Health and Fitness Technology (Tech Prep)2 years/900 hours Toms RiverThis course introduces students to the fields of fitness, personal training, nutrition, andphysical rehabilitative therapy through preparation as an entry level personal trainer,fitness technician or group fitness instructor. Course outline includes: basics in humananatomy, exercise physiology and kinesiology, as well as exercise program design andnutrition. Wellness/fitness workers and physical therapy aides are skilled workersemployed in fitness centers, corporate wellness programs, hospitals, sports medicineclinics and rehabilitation centers. A clinical experience is offered in the second year,where students may work in fitness, wellness and rehabilitative settings.A Tech Prep agreement with Ocean County College has been established toprovide students with an opportunity to earn advanced college credit uponsuccessful completion of this program.

Medical Assistant (Tech Prep) 2 years/900 hours Toms RiverThis program emphasizes physician assisting skills. It is divided into two years - anadministrative year and a clinical year. A student may begin the program at the begin-ning of either year. The curriculum covers medical terminology and abbreviations, med-ical law and ethics, insurance billing and coding, medical history taking, computerized

scheduling, in-depth computerized software (Medisoft), infection control, vital signs,electrocardiograms, laboratory procedures including urinalysis, Strep tests, capillarysticks, and venipuncture techniques. Students will learn to assist the physician withspecial procedures and minor surgery. Proper communications skills and professional-ism will be emphasized. Students may pursue their certification as a medical assistantor continue studies for radiology technician, licensed practical or registered nurse,health information technologist, billing and coding specialist and many other healthcarecareers. A Tech Prep agreement with Ocean County College has been established to providestudents with an opportunity to earn advanced college credit upon successfulcompletion of this program.Recommended skills: Keyboarding skills are strongly recommended.

Medical Skills and Related Health Careers (Tech Prep)2 years/900 hours Toms RiverThe first year provides an exploration of several health career options. The curriculumcovers anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and key concepts in health caresuch as professionalism and ethics. Basic patient care skills such as body mechanics,bed making, transferring patients, and personal care including feeding, bathing, andoral care, are covered. A clinical experience is provided at a long-term care facility. The second year is geared toward preparing the student to become a Certified NurseAssistant. The curriculum and clinical experiences are mandated by the StateDepartment of Health and Senior Services. Upon successful completion of the 90 hourprogram, the student may take the two-part state exam to earn their certification as aNurse Aide and may qualify for a work-study program offered through OCVTS. TheCertified Nurse Aide curriculum is a good foundation to help prepare students for acareer path in Nursing. Other components of the class include: membership in HOSA(Health Occupations Students of America), a student organization emphasizing profes-sionalism and leadership skills for students who are pursuing a health career. A Tech Prep agreement with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey(UMDNJ) has been established to provide students with an opportunity to earnadvanced college credit upon successful completion of this program.Recommended Skills: Strong math and science skills are recommended. Good attendance.

Building Construction Technology2 years/900 hours BrickThis program teaches theory and application of techniques used in the building trades.The program will include the following: skills in framing, roofing, sheathing, siding, doorand window installation, drywall installation, trim work and concrete block construction.Students who complete the program are qualified for employment or may become appren-tices through Carpenter’s Local 2018.

Custom Cabinetmaking2 years/900 hours JacksonThis program develops skills in the operation of a variety of woodworking machines and handtools. Students learn construction and fabrication of kitchen cabinetry, bathroom vanities, cus-tom furniture, moldings, and all types of custom-designed wood decoration.

Electrical Trades 2 years/900 hours JacksonThis program emphasizes the fundamental theory and application of electrical circuits,measuring instruments, transformers, electric motors, and various types of switchingdevices for power, lighting, and security. The program covers skills in commercial and res-idential wiring and industrial motor control. Cooperative Industrial Education opportunitiesand transition assistance into apprenticeship and work placement are integral to this pro-gram. Upon successful completion of this two year program, students will receive advancestanding in the OCVTS Adult Education Division Apprenticeship Program.

Electrical Trades/Integrated Cabling Technology2 years/900 hours Toms RiverThe scope of this course deals with residential and light commercial electrical wiring, aswell as voice, data, and video cabling. The fundamental theory and application of circuits,test equipment, transformers, motors, and various types of control devices for power, light-ing, and security are emphasized. Load calculations for residences and small commercialbuildings will be taught. Code requirements and installation methods for various types ofcables, conduits (both flexible and non-flexible), and service equipment will be addressed.Telecommunications skills and theory are included. An introduction to the NationalElectrical Code, as applied to residential and light commercial wiring is part of the pro-gram; therefore, strong math and language skills are recommended. The safe use of toolsand industry work practices will be stressed. Cooperative Industrial Education opportuni-ties and transition assistance into apprenticeship training and work placement are integralto this program. Upon successful completion of this two-year program, students willreceive advance standing in the OCVTS Adult Education Division ApprenticeshipProgram.

Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioningand Refrigeration (HVAC-R) (Tech Prep)2 years/900 hours BrickStudents will learn basic concepts necessary to install, repair, and maintain heating, airconditioning, and commercial refrigeration equipment. Basic theory and operation ofmechanical components and electrical controls will also be covered. The EnvironmentalProtection Agency Refrigerant Certification Exam is given upon completion of the pro-gram. Upon successful completion of this two year program, students will receive advancestanding in the OCVTS Adult Education Division Apprenticeship Program.A Tech Prep agreement with the University of Northwestern Ohio has beenestablished to provide students with an opportunity to earn advanced collegecredit upon successful completion of this program.

Plumbing2 years/900 hours WaretownThe student will be introduced to the major concepts and theories of modern plumbingdesign, blueprint reading, mathematics for plumbers, and materials and installation prac-tices. The Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing (CSST) Manufacturer’s Certification Exam isgiven upon completion of the program. Upon successful completion of this two year pro-gram, students will receive advance standing in the OCVTS Adult Education DivisionApprenticeship Program.Recommended Skills: Strong math and science skills are recommended.

Welding2 years/900 hours Toms RiverThe welding program provides students with hands-on instruction in a variety of weldingand metal fabrication processes. Students learn techniques in shielded metal arc, gasmetal arc, gas tungsten arc, and flux cored arc welding. Welding related cutting process-es covered include: oxy-fuel gas and plasma arc cutting. Upon completion students areprepared for careers in construction, fabrication, and repair of industrial and transportationequipment including cars, ships, pleasure crafts, and aircraft. They are also qualified foremployment in the area of structural welding including the fabrication of bridges, steelstructures, pipelines, and boilers. Area industries provide students with work-based welding experience. Students areencouraged to become members of the American Welding Society (AWS) and successfulgraduates may receive AWS Certification.

Child Care Professions2 years/900 hours BrickThis program provides training for teacher assistant positions in child care centers.Students gain experience supervising and guiding pre-schoolers, ages 3-5, in adevelopmentally appropriate nursery school setting within the classroom. Studentsdevelop skills in: performing health, safety, and sanitation activities; assisting withplanning and guiding curriculum experiences in art, creative movement, language arts,math, music, nutrition, pre-reading/pre-writing, and science; supervising daily routines,transitions and meals; creating instructional games and visual aids. In addition, JobShadowing/Mentoring is offered in community child care centers. Students can earninstructional hours towards the Child Development Associate (CDA), a nationallyrecognized credential, equivalent to group teacher certification. Graduates maycontinue their education in the early childhood field through college courses leading toNew Jersey teacher certification.

Cosmetology (Tech Prep)2 years/1000 hours Brick/Jackson/Toms RiverThis Tech Prep program teaches skills and the knowledge necessary to pass the NewJersey State Board of Cosmetology licensing exam. The skills taught relate to the majorareas of instruction including hair services, skin and nail services, business manage-ment, and barbering. In school, clinical experiences provide hands-on training. Highschool and adult applicants will be required to pass a written examination for admis-sion. Good attendance is critical for completion of hourly requirements to sit for licens-ing exam. A Tech Prep agreement with Ocean County College has been established toprovide students with a opportunity to earn advanced college credit uponsuccessful completion of this program.Adults may attend cosmetology programs full-time from 2-7PM daily or in the eveningfrom 4:30-9:30PM Monday, Tuesday and every other Friday. Culinary Arts (Tech Prep) 2 years/900 hours BrickThis Tech Prep program provides students with experience in the preparation, service,and management tasks involved in the food service industry. Areas of concentrationinclude: safety, sanitation, food preparation, advanced food preparation, commercialbaking, advanced baking, dining room service, and management. Students will alsogain practical experience by operating a dining and banquet facility. Tech Prep agreements with the Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape CommunityCollege, Johnson & Wales University, The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College andBrookdale Community College have been established to provide students with anopportunity to earn advanced college credit upon successful completion of this program.

Fashion Merchandising/Design (Tech Prep)2 years/900 hours BrickStudents will develop skills in the fields of retail sales, and fashion design. High school applicants will be required to pass awritten examination for admission. Law and Public Safety (Tech Prep)2 years/900 hours WaretownThis Tech Prep program explores the role of law and public safety in the United Statesand career opportunities in various law enforcement agencies. Marine/EnvironmentalMarine and Environmental Science1 year/450 hours ManahawkinThis one-year program will emphasize marine ecosystems, oceanography, basicecology, management and government regulations. This course is an interdisciplinarycourse integrating scientific principles of chemistry, biology, and earth science tounderstand interrelationships of the natural world. It emphasizes topics including: PineBarrens ecology, estuarine ecology, forestry, wildlife management, population dynam-ics, toxicology, and energy. This is a project-based, hands-on course which will requirestudents to research current information that relates to the environment and society.Oral reports and group presentations will be required. Students will participate invarious field and vessel trips throughout Ocean County. Students can qualify forinternships at laboratories, field work, environmental agencies, pollution control orindustry.Pre-requisites: Students must have completed Biology and Algebra I for admissions.Students should also have completed or concurrently be enrolled in Chemistry andAlgebra II during this course.

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences2 years/900 hours JacksonThis program will prepare students to enter the growing and profitable fields ofagribusiness and environmental concerns. It combines knowledge of the ecology ofliving systems with the study of environmentally safe practices in the areas of greentechnology, land-use management, green residential landscape design, integrated pestmanagement, outdoor recreation, and natural resource management. Students willhave access to cutting edge technology, field work, and research practices through apartnership with the New Jersey Department of Agriculture, Rutgers University Schoolof Environmental and Biological Sciences, New Jersey Forest Resource EducationCenter and Ocean County Soil Conservation District. Students will utilize the OCVTSclassroom, greenhouse, and land laboratory for their practical applications. Transportation TechnologiesAutomotive and Diesel Engine Technology (Tech Prep)2 years/900 hours JacksonThis program explores the fundamentals of engine technology with a completemachining curriculum for both gas and diesel engines. Cylinder boring, completecylinder head rebuilding and repair comprise the machining technology elements of thecurriculum. Students also study in-vehicle repairs covering complete engine repairs,brakes, steering and suspensions, as well as alternative fuel systems.A Tech Prep agreement with the University of Northwestern Ohio has beenestablished to provide students with an opportunity to earn advanced collegecredit upon successful completion of this program.Recommended skills: Strong math and science skills and an interest in hands-on work.

Automotive Technology (Tech Prep)2 years/900 hours Brick/Jackson/WaretownThe student will be introduced to major concepts and theories of automotive mainte-nance, service and repairs on modern automobiles. This program is also evaluated byNATEF and certified by The National Institute for ASE. The following subjects are ASEapproved: engine repair, engine performance, electrical/electronic systems, brakes,suspension, and steering. Upon completion students are prepared to take ASEcertification tests. Tech Prep agreements with the Brookdale Community College, Mercer County Collegeand the University of Northwestern Ohio have been established to provide studentswith an opportunity to earn advanced college credit upon successful completionof this program.

Aviation Aerospace Technology (Tech Prep)2 years/900 hours JacksonThis two year program explores a multitude of areas related to aviation and the aero-space industry. It is strongly recommended for the student with an avid interest in avia-tion and aerospace technology who wishes to continue his or her education after highschool. Highly motivated activities relating to aircraft design and construction, as well asrelated field trips and private pilot preparation, are integral to this program. Elements ofthe Federal Aviation Administration (FFA) certified curriculum will be used to presentconcepts of weight and balance and physics. Students will be exposed to all aircraftsystems, control tower operations, and ground operations. Several opportunities to gain

flight experience through the Mercer County College aviation program are made avail-able to the students. .A Tech Prep agreement with Mercer County Community CollegeFlight Tech Program has been established to provide students with an opportunity toearn advanced college credit upon successful completion of this program. Studentsmay continue their education at Mercer County Community College or four yearinstitutions such as Embry Riddle Aeronautical University or Florida Institute ofTechnology or in the military.

Collision Repair2 years/900 hours JacksonThis NATEF/ASE certified program provides students with the skills and knowledgerequired by the Collision Repair Industry. Using the Inter-Industry Conference on AutoCollision Repair (I-CAR) curriculum, students learn body repair, refinishing, and M.I.G.welding techniques. Advanced students learn computerized estimating and frame andunibody alignment procedures using laser measuring technology. Students areprovided with transition services to move into advanced education or apprenticeshipprograms upon graduation.

Marine Trades 2 years/900 hours Toms RiverThis program utilizes modern engine technology and test equipment to help enhanceskills in the theory, maintenance, and troubleshooting of outboard and inboard marineengines. Students will develop a working knowledge of boat design and construction,boat and trailer rigging, fiberglass repair, and marine systems. Curriculum also includesshop safety, marina operations and employability skills, boating safety, handling,seamanship, and basic navigation. The program has access to waterfront facilitieswhere students will operate and maintain vessels.Recommended Skills: Mastery of basic math skills, good communication skills, andattention to detail are strongly recommended.

Motorsports Technology2 years/900 hours JacksonThis course teaches skills needed for small engine maintenance and repair, two andfour cycle theory, motorcycle maintenance and repair, engine repair, diagnostic testingand rebuilding, drive train maintenance and repair, fabricating, and gas and electricwelding.

A career academy is an integrated approach to learning which lets students develop a career plan and educational pathway which focuses on a specific careermajor. Students receive a rigorous four-year college preparatory academic program which fulfills all requirements for high school graduation and admission tocompetitive colleges and universities. The curriculum is driven by New Jersey Core Content Curriculum Standards. It provides learning opportunities at affiliat-ed colleges as well as opportunities for externships and mentorships with local companies, business and industry. Students are selected from applicationsthrough a competitive process and enter at the ninth grade level. Applicants must reside in Ocean County to be eligible for admission. All school districts inOcean County are eligible to participate in sending applications to the programs.

The school offers intense studies in theater, dance, and voice.Courses include concentration in technical theater, acting techniques, directing, ballettechnique, modern technique, jazz technique, choreography, music theory, vocalhealth, song preparation, and arts history (music, dance, theater), along with all of theacademic requirements for a high school diploma. Audio for Electronic Media (Tech Prep)2 years/900 hours LakehurstThis program combines both art and science in a field that requires specializedtechnical knowledge. Students will be guided through the process of capturing sound(audio) and storing it in both the digital and analog mediums for reproduction. Studentswill learn recording technology through classroom instruction and application of thesetechniques using professional recording equipment at the school's multiple studiorecording facility. The program will be taught by professionals from the recording indus-try through real recording sessions with artists from many musical genres includingcommercials and voice over production. Curriculum content will cover the following:multimedia production, physics of sound, acoustics, multi-track recording/digital audiotechnology, Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) and musical instrument tech-nology, design and application of microphones, computer digital editing and mastering,the audio production console, signal processors, audio for visual production and postproduction, the music business, and sound reinforcement (concert sound). A strongfoundation in math and science is recommended as well as a recommendation inter-view with instructors for candidates pursuing enrollment. The skills taught relate to the major areasof instruction including hair services, skin and nail services, business management,and barbering. In school clinical experiences provide hands-on training. A high schooldiploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required and applicants will berequired to pass a written examination for admission. Good attendance is critical forcompletion of hourly requirements to sit for licensing exam. Culinary Arts (Tech Prep)1 year/900 hours LakehurstThis program provides students with experience in the preparation, service, andmanagement tasks involved in the food service industry. Areas of concentrationinclude: safety, sanitation, food preparation, commercial baking, advanced baking,table skills, and dining room management. Students will gain practical experience byoperating a dining and banquet facility at Joint Base Maguire-Dix-Lakehurst. A place-ment test is required for all applicants entering this challenging program. Personaltransportation is required.Tech Prep agreements with the Academy of Culinary Arts of Atlantic Cape CommunityCollege, Johnson & Wales University, and Brookdale Community College have beenestablished to provide students with an opportunity to earn advanced college creditupon successful completion of this program.

Practical Nursing (Tech Prep)44 weeks Toms RiverThis program consists of lecture and clinical experiences to educate students to carefor acute, sub-acute, chronically ill and convalescent patients. It is regulated by theState Board of Nursing and prepares students for the state licensing examination.Classroom theory and clinical experience are equitable in the number of hours requiredin the course. Students who successfully complete the program and pass the statelicensing examination can find employment in hospitals, nursing homes, industry,clinics, private homes and public and federal health agencies. Curriculum includesthe study of anatomy and physiology, nutrition and diet therapy, pharmacology,medical/surgical nursing, geriatrics, maternity, pediatrics, psychiatric nursing, interper-sonal relationship in nursing, maintaining records and independent study.A Tech Prep agreement with Ocean County College has been established toprovide students with an opportunity to earn advanced college credit upon successfulcompletion of this program.

After High School ProgramsAfter High School programs offer students several flexible options for those interested in career advancement, certification or a new career direction. Daytime,twilight or evening hours may be available. This can be an economical alternative to college and a shorter route to full-time employment.

Limited seating for adult students is also available in most of the other shared-time half-day programs in this guide.

Special ServicesEmployment OrientationThe Ocean County Vocational Technical School provides excellence in training forspecial needs children in Ocean County. We provide hands-on learning through skillstraining, job shadowing/internships, Cooperative Education and vocational exploration.

The Ocean County Vocational Technical School has six centers located throughoutOcean County. Classified students may apply for vocational technical training in thespecial needs program once they have entered eighth grade. All applications are madethrough the home school's child study team or guidance department. Special needsstudents are eligible to participate in the Employment Orientation Program duringgrades 9-12.

Vocational Assessment PurposeThe Evaluation Unit is a work-oriented environment designed to help students ingrades 8-12 make a sound vocational selection by exploring the world of workrelative to definite vocational areas, determining general areas of vocational interestand aptitudes, and identifying an appropriate vocational program for the student inthe least restrictive environment.

Application ProcedureAll applications for vocational evaluation are made to the Office of Special Services.The student must be classified. The proper application form is completed by theparent/guardian and the designated person at the home school and is forwarded tothe Office of Special Services with all necessary data.

Students ServedUpon completion of the Vocational Assessment Program, a special needs student maybe recommended for the Employment Orientation Program. (The term "special needs"refers to those students that have been classified by a child study team at their homeschool.) Classified students often have disabilities that prevent them from succeedingin vocational programs designed for non-handicapped individuals; therefore, ourEmployment Orientation Programs offer a variety of trade areas designed for thespecial needs student's success.

The Employment Orientation Program also provides services to a majority ofstudents with handicaps recognized by the New Jersey State Department ofEducation.

MainstreamingStudents in the Employment Orientation Program who exhibit strong interests andcompetencies in a specific vocational area may be placed in a regular vocational pro-gram. The mainstreaming of special needs students from the Employment OrientationProgram follows a carefully planned sequence to insure that the student is appropri-ately placed. Once a student placement has been made, continual follow-ups are con-ducted to insure that the student is progressing satisfactorily.
