Rain, rain, go away
Come again another day
ODs want to play
Rain, rain go away
My 3rd all time favourite nursery rhyme* is a fitting
way to start this week’s newsletter given the
amount of rain affected matches we had last week.
The first team fell foul of the weather in their
completed match, by being asked to bowl with a
bar of soap while the 2s had their match shortened
to 30 overs a side down at the Mote. Another
shortened match st HSBC saw ODs win the battle
of the bridge comfortably, while the efficient
nature of our 4th team’s performance took the rain
out of the question, as we took the points early.
It was a tough week for the colts section with two
rained off matches, and two convinging defeats,
but prospects look much better for the week ahead
with each team due a big win.
Thanks to all who have contributed to this week’s
newsletter. Some great match reports from teams
across the club, and the first fantasy cricket update is included. If anyone has any content they
would like me to include each week, just let me know and I’m more than happy to coordinate!
Have a great week!
Kind regards,

MATCH REPORTS
1st XI
OD CUACO 1st XI vs Dartford 1st XI - 4th May 2019
Hello and welcome to the 2019 league cricket
season. After a good pre-season schedule, the 1st
XI looked forward to hosting their first match of the
season in the dizzy heights of Division 2. Shout out
to Calum Brown on his debut for the 1st XI, cap
number 119, easy to remember for any late night
buses from East Croydon.
Chris led the troops out in the absence of Nick,
whose injuries keep him unavailable for the start of the season, by winning the toss and
electing to bat. Good start for the skipper. The rain card was very much teetering throughout
the day with a stop start game anticipated. Jamie and Ben strode out to weather the first storm
and began well scoring 23 and 41 respectively. However both openers fell to a great spell of
left arm orthodox from the Dartford spinner. With Jamie falling for the old “right arm over”
trick (the weather taking its first victim, the umpire actually said left arm round). Ben also fell
victim to the spinner being trapped in front, for the first time in our collective playing lives not
one complaint about a decision, roll on panel umps! Tom made a solid start coming in at 80-3
but was unable to keep out of the spinners web, also falling victim. Chris and Jack now looked
to steady the ship after the succession of wickets. The pair complemented one another well
with aggressive running, expansive stroke play and composed run accumulation. However for
Chris, this composure was short lived, as his eyes lit
up to and snicked off to the Dartford seamer. Out
strode Calum on debut with a point to prove. He
continued the stoke play with some lusty blows
combined with sensible batting. Calum seemed to
acclimatise to the slow and low wickets of the UK,
but was eventually undone and was caught for 27.
Andrew joined jack at the crease 173-5 with a lot of
work to do. Both batsmen ran well and punished any
bad bowling. Andrew took the initiative to the
bowlers and ended on 43*, including 4 consecutive
boundaries in one over. Andrew and Jack took the
team to 233. It seemed at the time that 233 was

about par for the day, with tough batting conditions and a slow outfield making run
accumulation a challenge.
A well fed squad began the second innings after team with Jamie and Chris taking the new pill.
Chris continued where he left off making the ball dance left and right. Jamie, recovering from a
recent injury showed signs of fitness, but could not complete his spell of bowling. Debutant
Calum replaced Jamie with the new ball. Calum started well and after a tough spell picked up
his first 1st XI wicket by dislodging the off bail in emphatic style. Baylis and Andrew replaced
the new ball bowlers. Baylis quickly found his consistent line and length causing the batsmen to
reign in their scoring, but Andrew was unable to find his radar. The wet ball causing the
bowlers problems throughout the afternoon. The Dartford batsmen continued to accumulate
and edge nearer and nearer to the total. Cameron and Dan Webster replaced Andrew and
Baylis. With Cameron showing that rubbish takes wickets. Cam was able to remove the
batsman with a genuine half tracker, that somehow managed to hit the stumps. Dan took
control at the other end and bowled very controlled line and length. His efforts slowed the
Dartford attack, but did not extinguish the stream. They continued to chip away at the total,
edging nearer and nearer. Chris, the tinkerer, tried everything in his power to limit the
batsmen. However some well composed shot selection and excellent time keeping was
ultimately too much for the ODs bowlers. Finishing the game off with 1.1 overs to spare.
Although the result was disappointing there were many positives to take. Calum and Baylis
bowled with good control, and hopefully can build on the solid base they have set up. Jack has
shown once again that he is
the backbone of the batting
line up and reliably
accumulates runs in the
middle order. And Andrew
has proved that he is in fact
an all rounder, not just a
bowler

2nd XI
In their final warm-up before the league season, the 2s headed to the Mote. After some
confusion about the fixtures, it was agreed that ODs would play against Sherwood CC. Sanders
won the toss, and thus, ODs were batting.
On an exceptional wicket and against some rather generous bowling, Sanders (27*) and Loader
(35*) put on 65 in 11 overs when a heavy shower arrived. The hosts suggested tea be taken early,
and with plentiful scones and cream on offer, the skipper promptly retired himself and got stuck
in. Parr (34) and Cook (38*) carried on after tea with the former making a conscious effort to bat
responsibly by waiting until his second ball before hitting a 6. Delightful strokeplay ensued from
both players but Parr, on seeing the 2 over warning from the captain, tried to hit one back onto
the motorway and was bowled. Sanders Snr (39*) made a rare appearance at 5 and after
surviving a close lbw first ball (Sanders Jnr deciding the ball was going underneath the stumps),
began to find his touch with a couple of trademark sweeps for 6. Parke (20*) played some nice
strokes before Paul Hunter and Noah De Vaux finished the innings, with ODs compiling an
imposing 224-1 from their 30 overs.
Dan Hunter was unlucky not to pick up a wicket in the first over, with Sanders and Cook both
spilling regulation chances. Nonetheless, Hunter and Asa Smith maintained some pressure, well
supported by accurate spells from De Vaux and Alex Davison. Paul Hunter (2-23) got the rewards
for bowling a nagging length while the ever-agile Loader executed a fine run out from backward
point. Sherwood made no real effort to get the runs and finished on 138-3, ODs victorious by 86
runs. With some match practice under their belts, the 2s travel to fellow promoted side
Chestfield next week in what should be a high-scoring affair.

3rd XI
I start this report by telling you that it has been written on
a national express coach from Bournemouth to London (I
did intend to read this out to my fellow passengers, but
I’m on my final warning with the service). Anyway...
Nothing gets the heart pumping like an away day at HSBC!
The game was written down as a friendly, but my word it
was far from it!!!(Actually that’s not true, they were a
decent group of lads and everyone had a lovely time)!
Anyway, back to the battle of the bridge (bar). HSBC won
the toss and elected to bat first. Interim Captain Mark
Coles gave a rousing speech to get the lads going (lol joke,
he just asked Hider how many jäger bombs he had had
the night before)!
Fresh from puberty, low voice Sam De Vaux opened the
bowling with a guy still waiting to hit puberty, Calum
Hider. After an ok start, they were replaced by the spin
twins Matiullah Haidar & Freddie Sweeting who frustrated the batsmen immensely! Both
bowled well and picked up 5 wickets between them! The puberty twins then came back on for
a second spell and got 3 wickets between themselves!
The fielding would turn out to be the major difference between the two sides - Dan Brown Bob
Lake & Anil Mungol were tremendous in the field. Their athleticism, elegance and prowess
were on show for all to see (Only Sams mum and Colesy Snr came to watch to be fair)! We also
had the 911 tribute act (Ask your mum) aka Howard Smith, Dave Vigus & Mark Coles steadying
the ship as keeper, slip 1&2! What they lacked in running for the ball, they made up for in heart
/ sledging our own team!
HSBC ended on 157-8 off 35 overs. What happened next, find out after the break.
(Goes to commercials)
(Back from commercials)
Yes welcome back to the 3XI match report, live from a national express coach. We left you with
HSBC setting a gettable 158 to win. Before the chase, a shout-out to the teas. Some solid
sandwich options, chips, cakes and more. I must say, the chicken nuggets were to die for(I do
love a chicken nugget me)!
New 3s captain has been the talk of
the town recently
6
Anyway to the second innings...I would do an in depth report about our batting, but my coach
has nearly arrived into Victoria and what happened is pretty simple....
Sam De Vaux & Matiullah Haidar opened the batting, spanked the ball to all parts, got all the
runs (Bar a cameo 2 from Dan Brown) & won us the game comfortably! This was handy as
young Freddy made his 7pm bed time and even got a story in before sleepies!
Also, a big well done to Bob & Calum who umpired for the entirety of the second innings! It’s
commitment like this that will inspire this great club to new heights!
Anyway enough from me, don’t forget to swipe up, subscribe, follow, like, tweet, poke and
more. All the best, Hider xx

4th XI
Match Report: ODCuaco 4s vs Orpington 4s - 04 May – Home
The first game of the 4s 2019 league campaign was against Orpington 4s. Robin East had
already reported ‘insider information’ that Orpington were struggling to put out sides for their
Saturday fixtures and their side against us was likely to include a good number of Colts –
though Robin of all people should know that doesn’t indicate a weak side! Upon the oppo’s
arrival it was apparent the Colts forecast was correct and, having won the toss, the Orpington
skipper announced that he felt they had precious little batting and he offered to bowl
first. This proved to be a very kind gesture – not least since we were ‘suffering’ from a depth of
batting not seen in previous seasons in the 4s, with the skipper having the choice of 4 regular
opening batsmen from whom to select the opening pair.
Steve Smith and Isaac Loader were asked to open with the hope/expectation that they would
continue from where they left of last season and that proved to be the case. Smith scored a
useful 27, including 6x 4s, before he decided to leave a ball from a young left arm orthodox
spinner which was looking to miss off but, instead of turning away, he’d bowled a straight one
which actually cut back off the pitch to graze Steve’s off stump and dislodge the bail. Isaac
went on to score his first league 50 of the season, including 2x 6s in his 51 before being
caught. Chris Colby replaced Smith in the 15th over when we already looked in control of the
game – he went on to score 58*, looking remarkably composed and unhurried. By the time
Kev Harding replaced Isaac in the 28th over, when we were already on 135 at just 2 down, Kev
knew what was required. He batted like a 4 coming in with just 12 overs to go, completely
changing the tempo of the innings and calling Chris into sharp singles, even from balls
travelling a couple of metres off Chris’s pads. Kev scored a fast and valuable 26. Enter Rowan
Clapp. He picked up from where Kev left off (though the sprinting between the wickets was
7
not quite so sharp), racking up a quick 19 before gallantly ‘walking’ on a Run Out appeal which
the skipper, umpiring, was struggling to call as he was out of position. This was the start of a
mini collapse as the incoming batsmen sought to maintain the run rate with plenty of wickets
in hand. Will East strolled in with less than 2 overs to go and immediately launched his first
ball, with beautiful timing, seeking a 6 over cow corner, only to be caught by the one perfectly
positioned fielder on the boundary ‘rope’. Kai Bennett similarly committed and suffered from
another run out before Chairman Rouse walked to the crease for his customary single figure,
Not Out (1 on this occasion), as we ran out of overs. With a near perfect batting
performance/innings management, we posted a healthy looking 215, in damp conditions,
particularly if Orpington’s batting was going to prove as weak as their skipper had predicted.
The objective was to rush through tea as quickly as possible, as we tried to recover time lost to
two brief rain breaks – mainly made up of time walking to the clubhouse and back again as, on
both occasions, the rain stopped almost as soon as we’d positioned the covers. We didn’t
want to lose the opportunity of a good points total on the opening day of the season. And
that’s exactly what we achieved.
The skipper wanted to give all those that hadn’t batted at all/much (and Isaac), the opportunity
to bowl and decided at the outset on quick rotations of 4 over spells, planning to adjust if
someone was having a particularly good time with the ball. This proved successful – after the
first round of 4 overs Sawko had 1 for 5, Phil Parke, 1 for 14, Robin East an incredible 0 for 1
(which was a wide from his very first ball), Kai, 2 for 10, Isaac 0 (unusually), for 14 and Will East
2 for18. To the protests of the wicket keeper (and chairman of selectors), the skipper started
the rotation again but it proved to be an inspired change, with Sawko and Parke sharing the
last 4 wickets (3 bowled and 1 LBW), between them in just 3.1 overs.
All in all, this was a very successful opening day of the season set up by the perfect batting
performance, consistent bowling and steady fielding, including 3 catches (Smith at Mid On,
Harding at Slip and Loader dominating his customary Short Extra territory). Orpington finished
on 86 all out, the 4s bagged the full 20 points and Orpington went home with just 3 points,
earned by getting us 6 down. A great start to the season, looking forward to keeping this going
next time out against Holmesdale 3s, on 18th, at the lovely St Lawrence Cricket Club Ground,
which may prove to be a bit of a grudge match, following last year’s slightly unsavoury
‘unregistered player’ controversy.

Match Report - Friendly Game, Saturday 27th April 2019 ODCuaco 3s/4s vs Catford & Cyphers WinTossBat was the skipper’s decision. Not because it was an unpleasantly cold day compounded by a strong wind but because he’d never previously captained a side with so much batting and he didn’t want the possibility of his equally strong bowling attack knocking over Catford & Cyphers cheaply and preventing everyone from getting a game. This turned out to be an inspired decision! Whilst Steve Smith went cheaply, uncharacteristically nicking off, flashing at something a little too far outside off, his opening partner, new player Bilal (Bill, Bills, Billy) Chowdhry, who commenced by smashing a 6 over the 25ft netting into the gardens beyond cow, off just his second ball on the Warren, went on to terrify the Catford bowlers, eventually succumbing on 85 (5x 6s, 9x 4s, 3x lost balls). This set the scene. The time taken to establish balls were lost and to replace them, along with frequent tinkering of the field by the Catford skipper in a futile attempt to stem the runs, led to just 10 overs being bowled in the first hour and an agreement to reduce the game to 35 overs. As it was, with support from Shehry Gul (46, 3x 6s, 6x 4s, 4x singles), Majid (Doctor) Chowdhry (23), Sachin (16*) and Imran (Mr Gill) Gill (24*), led to a declaration on 240 for 5 after 31 overs, as everyone wanted to get inside for tea – and some welcome respite from the bitter wind. The skipper was right to worry about the possibility that the strength of our bowling attack may present a challenge for the Catford batsmen. Noah De Vaux (7-2-27-1) and Asa Smith (7-2- 26-2), opened the bowling and after their 10 overs, they’d shared 4 maidens, conceding just 24 runs and Catford were a mere 28 for 1 (Shehry Gul taking a catch at slip off Asa’s bowling). This (again), set the scene. Whilst the Catford batsmen toiled on, still believing, the rest of the bowling attack followed Noah’s and Asa’s lead with Sawko (5-2-9-1), Shehry (5-1-23-1), Doctor (3-0-9-0), Mr Gill (4-1-7-2), Bill (3-1-8-0) and Sachin (1-0-2-0), all contributing. Despite a little respite from the cold and wind (it was positively sunny for a few minutes), we were all quite relieved when the Catford skipper believed the game was all over after 35 overs when Catford had reached 128 for 7 – he did not take the 4 overs we potentially gave him when we declared. In all, despite the bitter weather, this was a good pre-season run out, just 7 days before the
start of the season. Bring it on!

U 15
The morning commenced with the opposition saying that 2 of their players needed to get off
early so they’d like to field first. Luckily they won the toss so we didn’t have to find out how
ruthless the skipper would be if we won. Bexleyheath deployed some good opening bowlers
and we were quickly 2 wickets down. Isaac Loader (who was going to open but discovered at
9.25 that he didn’t have his spikes) joined Jack McCarthy and they set about first frustrating the
bowlers and then starting to get on top of them. Jack eventually fell for 16 - an innings of real
grit as the the bowling was about as tough as it gets in this division, and once he got himself in
he started to play more freely. Isaac was joined by Noah de Vaux and they extended the score
until Isaac eventually fell for 47. Some thumping blows in that stay including a sumptuous extra
cover drive for 4. A couple of quick wickets fell bringing Louis Mills to the crease. He quickly
powered a sequence of 6,4,4 and then blasted the ball at the bowler who parried and then
dived to catch the rebound. A great catch and a typical ‘bomber’ innings. We were eventually
bowled out in the last over with Noah unbeaten on 13.
I asked the boys after 6 or 7 overs what score they thought we should be aiming for and they
suggested 70. This was a mark of how tough the going was early on, so to reach 114 was a
great effort. It gave us a chance but we would have to field and bowl perfectly. Unfortunately
one of the 2 Bexleyheath boys who needed to disappear early was the Kent wicketkeeper and
he wasn’t hanging around. He dispatched good balls and bad balls to the boundary with
regularity and quickly reached 50. Although the run rate dropped significantly after he retired
the damage was done. There was time for Asa Smith (the pick of the bowlers) to pick up a
wicket but Bexleyheath ran out 9 wicket winners. A tough game for the guys but a gutsy
performance none-the-less. Thanks to Andy de Vaux for scoring, Richard Loader for umpiring
(and fetching spikes), Jonathan and Julie for collecting the match fees and Jo Colby for the
coffees.
