The Office of Diversity and Inclusion was estab-lished in 1994 to support the University of Central Florida’s fourth strategic goal, “to become more inclusive and diverse.” We strive to make diversi-ty and inclusion visible and critical elements that indelibly permeate the life and values of the UCF community.

We offer education, training and support services, facilitation of cross-campus collaboration, and en-terprise-wide leadership to the campus and our community to build an inclusive culture for all stu-dents, faculty, and staff.

The mission of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion is to collaborate with the University of Central Flor-ida community to advocate for and educate about the university’s goal of becoming more diverse and inclusive.

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion pursues five areas of focus to support the UCF goal to be more inclusive and diverse:

• Campus Climate Developing and sustaining an inclusive culture is the foundational undertaking by the university community to maximize the professional and learning performance of its members.

• Education and Scholarship Supporting the infusion of diversity, inclusive practices, cultural competency, and social justice throughout UCF curricula and research.

• Outreach and Engagement Bringing together the Central Florida community to advance our understanding of how the university can serve and represent our region.

• Organizational structures Impacting how people, their work relationships, and policies and procedures impact UCF’s openness to diversity and accountability for an inclusive culture.

• Recruitment and Retention Providing greater opportunity for traditionally under-represented individuals to become part of the UCF work force and student body, and supporting their success and longevity in the campus community.

why this MAtters

We are strongest as a higher education institu-tion, employer, and community leader when we bring diverse thought and experience to our deci-sion-making, teaching, research, and interactions amongst community members. Respect for and inclusion of diverse voices

• drive innovative thought and action;• maximize the talent and contirbutions of fac-

ulty, staff, and students;• improve recruitment and retention; and • build a campus more representative of our

constituents and Central Florida partners.

Diversity encompasses those human character-istics that make us unique, as well as the many universal qualities that make us the same.

Dimensions of diversity, some more dominate and sustaining than others, can include sex, race, age, national origin, ethnicity, gender identity and ex-pression, intellectual and physical ability, sexual-ity, income, faith and non-faith perspectives, so-cio-economic class, political ideology, education, geographic location, primary language, family status, military experience, organization role and level, work style, work experience, political beliefs, cognitive style, and communication style.

Inclusion is the active creation and maintenance of culture, policy, and educational and business practices that celebrate diversity and recognize the value of diveristy to our mission to excel as educators, employers, and community partners. Inclusion also requires diverse representation at all levels of the organization.

Cultural competency is the abilty to function effectively in the presence of diversity.
