Odysseus as an Intellectual The importance of brain over brawn...

By: Hilary Quinn, Allan Stott, Brianna Erdman, Madhu Mahesh

Who is Odysseus?

• Famous Greek General- fought in the Trojan War

• Uses wisdom to win the war

• Delayed from his return home for 20 years and painstakingly manages to work and fight his way home, which requires great strength

What does playing Odysseus encapsulate?

We all know that Odysseus is a brave, attractive, bold, capable and above all strong man who leaves no stone unturned to get what he wants

And in that respect, you have much in common with the character. But that's not all he is...

Behind the brawn, the brain shines through.

While strength is integral, intellectuality is more so.

Odysseus' Bravery- Trojan War

• Dressed as a beggar

• Created plan to infiltrate Trojan Camp- Horse

Brains over Brawn

Iron Man:

• He is an ordinary man but by using his intellectuality, he has the power to turn himself into a Superhero.

• Uses knowledge/technology to create Iron man suit

• Saves the world from villains/attacks.

Robert Downey Jr. as IRON MAN.

When you think of Iron Man, you think of his indestructibility and finesse of power. But would that exist without his brain and intellectuality?

Odysseus' Bravery- Cyclops

• Tricked theCyclops withwine• Told himhis name was"Noman"• Escaped from the cavewith sheep

Power from Intellect

Bat Man

• No super natural power

• Uses knowledge to create devices to defeat the enemy

• Saves the city from evil villains

Batman

Batman is always one step ahead of his enemy. He wins his battles not only using his powers, but by out thinking his villians. And in many ways, this reflects in Odysseus.

Odysseus' Bravery- Persuasive

• Convinces Naucissa to take him to her village

• Convinces Queen Arete to gain his trust and help him return home

• Convinces his men to stop eating the Lotus

Brains over Brawn

Professor X

• A telepath with "mutantpower" of knowledge

• Highly knowledgeable ofrelevant fields, such as genetics.

• Creates experiments to help mankind/mutants

Professor X

Professor X persuades the other mutants to remain peaceful towards the humans at his academy.

He harnesses his intelligence in order to have a control of the other mutant's abilities, and without his brain, there would be no X-Men.

Strength at the Expense of Intellect

The Hulk:

• Super natural strength

• Loses all ability to reason

• Brute strength driven by animal instincts

Hulk

Despite Hulk having the incredible physical strength that you admire so much, with it, he loses all ability to reason, and the prospect of thinking is nullified.

Helping vs Hurting

• Although you would like to portray Odysseus as a hero who relies on his strength, there is more to his character.

• We hope you see that you have the ability to take on more dimensional roles.

• The role of Odysseus is very demanding, and we hope you can live up to the idealistic Odysseus that Homer created.

• Therefore, sheer strength is not all there is to a hero.

We hope you consider our proposal, and we look forward to working with you soon!
