Immune SyStem-BooStIng FoodS For WInter

By Karon Warren

Winter brings colder temperatures and shorter days, and, unfortunately, it usually means more sick days, too. to limit exposure to illness, some may get a flu shot, take a multi-vitamin or wash their hands more often. there are simple additions you can make to your diet that also could boost your immune system.

1. _____________________

While berries are quite popular during the summer when they are in season, they also can provide health benefits in colder weather. doctors recommend them because they are naturally high in vitamin C. Add your favourite variety to oatmeal, yoghurt, smoothies, pancakes and muffins.

2. _____________________

making yoghurt a part of your daily meals is another good way to boost your immune system. It’s a good source of vitamin A, protein and zinc, not to mention healthy bacteria that potentially protect your digestive tract from disease-causing germs. yoghurt makes a great afternoon snack, or use it as a fruit dip or in a smoothie.

3. _____________________

give your immune system a boost in winter with a bit of honey. used as an antibiotic for centuries, it helps prevent bacterial growth. Add some honey to your hot tea or spread on a piece of wheat toast. It is also a tasty addition to plain yoghurt or drizzled on oatmeal.

4. _____________________

Hot tea is a standard beverage for many people, especially during colder weather. Hot tea may help our bodies ward off infections. not only that, but as an added bonus, drinking tea will help keep us hydrated.

5. _____________________

A very popular winter spice, cinnamon also delivers some key health benefits. Cinnamon contains essential oils that may help reduce the amount of time we spend getting over a cold or the flu. Sprinkle some cinnamon on rice pudding, add to curries or sprinkle over honey drizzled on wheat toast.

6. _____________________

Studies show that turmeric may help fight infections, reduce inflammation and treat digestive problems. typically found as a bright yellow powder, this immune system booster is often used in Asian curry dishes. you also can add it to egg salad, salad dressings or steamed cauliflower.

Could AntI-AgeIng CHoColAte reAlly HelP reduCe WrInKleS?

Hands up if you love chocolate? you’ll be pleased to hear that a group of scientists from a Cambridge university lab have developed the world’s first Anti-Ageing chocolate bar.

It’s what we’ve all been waiting for — the chance to eat chocolate guilt-free is now here. But just how effective is this chocolate bar at reducing the appearance of wrinkles?

According to its makers, one 7.5 g bar of Anti-Ageing chocolate contains an equal amount of astaxanthin (an antioxidant) as a fillet of salmon. It also contains the same levels of free-radical fighting ingredients as 100 g worth of dark chocolate.

With the ability to change the appearance of the skin of a 50-something year old to resemble that of a person in their twenties, this chocolate bar sounds too good to be true. the effects were tested over a period of four weeks with volunteers told to eat the chocolate every day.

After the four weeks, the volunteers showed signs of reduced inflammation and increased blood supply to the skin tissue.

the chocolate bar’s creator, dr. Ivan Petyaev, said: “People using [the chocolate bar] claimed that their skin was better and we can see that the product is working to slow down ageing. “As the bar contains just 38 kcal it’s even safe for diabetics.”

the laboratory has not said anything about the price yet, but it is likely to be quite expensive. the lab hopes young, rich business executives will buy it. other scientists say more research is needed for people to know whether or not this chocolate actually works.

An increasing number of companies are turning to video conferencing (1) ______________________. experts predict that in the next 10 years, video conferencing will replace as much as 20% of business travel. So why has there been such growth in digital meetings?

“the key driver behind our use of video conferencing is cost,” says martin Pile, director of Corporate Communications with a multinational engineering company. “the technology means that (2) ________________________. our people can meet more frequently at less cost. “video conferences also enable us to bring together people (3) ____________________________.”

Fiona Clark, a communications consultant who advises companies about digital conferencing solutions, is also enthusiastic. “Companies have to realize that the technology is not free. video conferencing systems are getting cheaper and more reliable, but companies which want to use them (4) _________________________. this can be a particular problem for small and medium-sized companies,” says Fiona.

miss Clark often recommends companies that adopt video conferencing to invest in training for the staff who will meet each other digitally. “People have to realize that a meeting via video conference is not the same (5) ________________________. People can feel nervous and act in a different way than usual,” Fiona comments.

“We provide training (6) ______________________________ and get them to notice their nervous tics on screen. If people play with their hair or put their hands in front of their mouths because they’re nervous, we can draw their attention to this and help them to appear more relaxed,” she adds.

Having a video conference may not be as easy as going to a real meeting, especially at first. But more of our meeting are going to be held via video link-up in the future. It looks like we’re all going to need some of that training.
