ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SEMINARDepartment of International& European Studies

The magnitude of the refugee problem was brought into clear focus in 2015. While by no means a recent phenomenon, the

dramatic increase in flows towards Europe brought radical changes to the rules of the game.

The Schengen Treaty, which has been provisionally suspended by certain member states, is already being tested. Maintaining it will depend in large part on the effective guarding of external

borders, creating added pressures for ‘gateway’ countries.

The management of the refugee crisis is not only complex, but may also spark developments for a Europe that is experiencing

an identity crisis. At the five-day Seminar, together with top academics, practitioners and experts, we will evaluate the threats of populism, xenophobia and the growth of anti-

European sentiments within European states and leaderships, and the social and economic repercussions of the human

flows. At the same time, we will assess the developments in Syria and the wider Middle East, the significance of the Islamic

State, and the role of powers within and beyond the region.
