President’s Message
Summer is nearly over and fall is fast approaching. Time to get all those garden
vegetables, canned, pickled, frozen or simply just put away for the winter. I hope
that everybody had enjoyed a beautiful summer holiday.
Please read this bulletin carefully and note the changes in our operations. Please
mark these dates on your calendar:
October 4 AUSRL Convention (not confirmed)
October 5 Bishop’s Tea at St. Anthony’s U.O.C.
October 24 & 25 Western Eparchy Conference
November 8 Puschenia
November 16 Parish kharm (Patron Saint Day – St. Michael)
Beginning September 8, the Divine Liturgy will begin at 10:00 a.m. The
fellowship roster will be responsible for the lunches on Sundays.
The internment camp plaque unveiling was very successful. The program ran for 1
hour and 15 minutes. There were speeches, singing, video, and even snacks. Some
people liked the video, others enjoyed listening to Anne Sadelain, a descendant of
the internee, her father, the late William Doskoch and still others enjoyed
listening to Solomia Babiak, a young girl from Ukraine. She brought many people
to tears with her beautiful singing with no musical accompaniment. People had
the opportunity to look at the display and the plaque.
Changes in our parish ……….
Security has been changed to TYCO since Tyco bought out ADT. ADT still exists but
the firm serves only residential and small businesses. The square footage of our
complex exceeds the small business requirement. Our account is with TYCO.
Signage over our entrance/exit code pads has been changed to TYCO.
Alberta Liquor and Gaming Commission has implemented changes to our
funding. The bingo and casino funding operated by St. Michael’s Men’s Society is
being transferred to the parish. The last bingo for the Men’s Society is Tuesday,
September 2, 2014. After September 2, 2014, all the remaining bingos will be
transferred to the parish. The casino is also being transferred to the parish. After
September 2, 2014, Korneil or his assistant will be calling you to help out at all
bingos.
Get well wishes are extended to Jean Zotek, Ksenia Steciuk, Joyce Wilk and Helen
Franchuk and anyone who is ill. May God grant them health. We need to keep
them in our daily prayers.
Have you moved? Please provide us with your change of address.
Senior Citizens Club ……..
Rt. Reverend Father Nicholas is organizing a Senior Citizens Club. Once this club is
organized, the members can decide on the day they wish to meet. St. John’s
U.O.C. holds theirs on Wednesdays. The club can plan its activities: exercise,
lectures, singing, card playing, videos, birthday celebrations, potluck meals, bus
trips, fashion shows, hosting other senior clubs etc. This would give our members
something to look forward to every week. I remember attending one at St.
Andrew’s. They exercised for 30 minutes, had a birthday celebration and Mr.
MacIntosh taught five Ukrainian words and what they meant. The provincial
government has grants that help offset expenses for bus trips for senior citizens.
We need at least 10 people to start this club.
Delegate to Western Eparchy Assembly …. Is anyone keenly interested in
attending this conference in October. It will be held at St. John’s Cathedral. The
deadline for registration is October 1, 2014. Please let me know if interested.
The parish is celebrating its 55 anniversary this year. Is there anything special that
you would like to see or hear ….. just let me know.
Word of mouth can be your most powerful marketing tool.
Have an awesome day and know that someone has thought about you today.

September-October 2014
Life is so precious! We often take for granted our
family and friends and as most of us get older these
people are so important to us.
I hope that this past couple of months has been a
time to reconnect with friends and family, enjoy
some down time, take advantage of the wonderful
weather and generally become revitalized for
another wonderful church year.
Thank you Not everyone relaxed all summer. A group of men
and women came together to clean, core, blanch,
devein, package and freeze cabbage. Thank you to
the volunteers who gave up some summer time to
help with this work bee.
Remembering Internment Camps It has taken the Canadian government a long time to
recognize the Ukrainians who were forced into
labor camps in 1914 to 1920. These people
committed no crime but their passports showed
them born in the Austro-Hungary region and it was
World War 1.
While the men were imprisoned, the women were
on their own often raising several small children.
They lived in a small mud plastered house heated
by a wood stove. The woman may have had a cow
for milk and 6 to 10 hens for eggs. Mostly they
relied on the produce from the garden which was
either canned or dried or placed in a dirt cellar
under the floorboards of the house. They were
forced to rely heavily on family and neighbors. It is
difficult to visualize how these women and children
survived.
On August 22, 2014 our parish unveiled 1 of 100
plaques distributed across Canada in remembrance
of the victims of the internment camps.
Rt. Rev. Mitred Protopresbyter Nicholas Rauliuk
and President Shirley Wozimirsky did an excellent
job of coordinating this function. Their choice of
speakers and venue was well done. Keep up the
good work.

Trusting everyone has an opportunity to enjoy the summer and has stayed heathy and
well. Fall will soon be upon us and I wish all a Happy Harvest. May it be the
vegetables from your gardens or the crops from your fields. Hopefully the weather will
co-operate and the crops will be put away for another year.
Thank you to all the hard working Casino volunteers, it takes a lot of workers and some
late hours, but your efforts paid off and yielded the parish approximately $80,700. A
special thank you to the volunteers that worked the two days shift..
Mark your calendars, the men's society’s next meeting will be held on:
September 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Please attend for we have some important items to share with all the members.
The Men's Society would like to thank all the volunteers, men and ladies who are
always ready to help at our on-going bingos. Bingo funds cover some of our Parish
expenses. A special thank you to Natalka & ladies that always prepare the after bingo

REMEMBER. LEARN. NEVER FORGET THEM.......
One hundred years ago – a wave of repression, as “enemy aliens” were herded into 24
internment camps from coast to coast. One hundred years later – a wave of
remembrance takes place hallowing all victims of Canada’s First National Internment
Operations.
Solomiya and Oksana Kaczmar officially unveiled of the plaque “CTO” (100) with Rt. Rev. Mitred Protopresbyter Nicholas Orest Rauliuk blessing it. Twenty-four Internment Camps were read at which time St. Michael’s Church Choir, under the direction of Lubov Kaczmar, sang “Memory Eternal”- “Veechnaya Pamyat”.
Parish President, Shirley Wozimirsky, gave the Opening Remarks and introduced our
Guest Speakers: Hon. Laurie Hawn, MP Edmonton Centre; Councilor, Bev Esslinger,
City of Edmonton; Vivian Skakun representing the Ukrainian Canadian Congress –
Alberta Provincial Council and Anne Sadelain(Doskoch), descendent of Internee, late
