These three fundamental elements are essential life-giving gifts for human life. In the prayer the priest asks for purity and abundance of the three gifts, blesses the home and all its dwellers, and asks God to keep them away from visible and invisible ene- mies, and protect them under His powerful right hand, granting them health of soul and body. Today, more than ever, we need the presence and blessing of the Lord in our homes and lives. The revival of this centuries old custom will certainly bring us close to our Lord. îÜúðÐܾø / CHRISTMAS HOME BLESSING

From the earliest times, the home was a sacred place, the center of family and ritual life. It is the most basic of all social structures, where we are born and live many years, a place where great family events transpire. Here we break bread, share joys and sorrows, pray, celebrate, worship. Here God is present in the loving relationships that tran-scend fragile human existence. What two cities were rained on by fire and brimstone? Put these 3 “liturgical moments” in correct chronological order: We sing thr Lord’s Prayer, the priest washes his hands, we kiss the priest’s hand cross.

During what season of the year is the crucifixion rather that the empty cross the main focus during liturgy.

What is the result of confession and penance? Nooneh and Maneh are associated with what two other famous women? What is the term used for when the priest dips the bread into the wine is conse-crating Holy Communion?

The answers can be found on the last page of the bulletin.

ARMENIAN CHRISTMAS Why Do Armenians Celebrate Christmas on January 6th?

"Armenian Christmas," as it is popularly called, is a culmination of celebrations of events related to Christ's Incarnation. Theophany, or Epiphany (or Asdvadz-a-haydnootyoon in Armenian, which means "Revelation of God"). This is the central theme of the Christmas Season in the Armenian Church. During the Armenian Christmas season, the major events celebrated are the Nativity of Christ in Bethle-hem and His Baptism in the River Jordan. The day of this major feast in the Arme-nian Church is January 6th. A ceremony called “Blessing of Water” is conducted in the Armenian Church to commemorate Christ’s Baptism. It is frequently asked why Armenians do not celebrate Christmas on December 25th with the rest of the world. Obviously, the exact date of Christ's birth has not been historically established nor is it recorded in the Gospels. However, historically, all Christian churches celebrated Christ's birth on January 6th until the fourth century. The feast of Christmas was not a separate church feast for the first four centuries of Christian history. It was celebrated with Epiphany in the one great feast of God's appearance on earth in the form of the human Messiah of Israel. The Nativity began to be celebrated on the twenty-fifth of December in order to off-set the pagan festival of the Invincible Sun, which occurred on that day. The Church established it quite consciously as an attempt to defeat the false religion of heathens. Christ is the True Sun of Righteousness (Mal 4:2), who is himself worshipped by all of the elements of nature. At the time, Christians used to observe these pagan festivities. In order to put an end to this pagan practice, the church hierarchy designated December 25th as the official date of Christmas and January 6th as the feast of Epiphany. However, Armenia was not affected by this change for the simple fact that there were no such pagan prac-tices in Armenia at the time and the fact that the Armenian Church was not a satellite of the Roman Church. Thus, remaining faithful to the traditions of their forefathers, Armenians have continued to celebrate Christmas on January 6th until this day.

Godfather of the Cross

For the Blessing of the Water Service commemorating the Baptism of our Lord, the very special privilege of serving as “Godfather of the Cross” has been ex-tended to Chris Grey. In this capacity, Chris will have the responsibility of bearing the Holy Cross after it has been submerged in the blessed Holy Water, and welcoming the faithful to kiss the cross as they receive their portion of blessed water. We congratulate Chris for this special responsibility.
