A NEW BRANDING VISION

Thomas Edison did not invent the light bulb. What he did do very well however was mass produce the fi rst practical light bulb and then provide the electrical system to support it. This is the power company we know today as General Electric. Without any doubt the fi rst light bulb was a brilliant invention but it was worthless without the research, back-up and support that Edison brought to the table. This is how he evolved a bright idea into a light-ing . This philosophy is what Ronin commits to. To represent our new focus we have realigned the branding of our companies in order to unite them under the Solitary Ronin Brand. We also introduced the Solution Icons to facilitate the unifi cation of all our products and services.

The past two years saw Ronin Grain Management Solutions, Ronin Precision Farming Systems and Ronin Independent Surveyors expand their markets to include industry and the mining sector. Due to this expansion, and an overlapping of products and services, the three companies migrated to the Solitary Ronin Brand and its accompanying solution icons. The Solitary Ronin Brand and its Solution Icons are not industry aligned but solution centric and therefore not subject to bias that might be encountered in new markets, where associations with grain, agriculture and marine activities are not relevant. The Solitary Ronin brand offers each separate company a united brand under which to do business and the leverage afforded by past dealings that individual Ronin companies have had with new markets. This is our future vision but it is fi rmly built upon the strong foundations of our past. Below are the individual Solution Icons we currently employ.

The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) has chosen RDS South West to supply Liftlog 100 on-board weighing sys-tems for its counterbalance forklifts.

The RSC has a six-week, five-play residency at New York’s Park Avenue Armory, which requires the company to trans-port a full-scale replica of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

Designed and built by RSC’s in-house team, the auditorium replica that complies with European and US building legisla-tion is a four-tier, 19m high structure made up of individual seating units with built-in fork channels that allow them to be easily weighed by the forklift-installed Liftlog 100.

The RSC team previously used a more complex jib and load cell arrangement that was time-consuming to install and re-

move from the forklift, as it had to move between weighing and lifting tasks.

The Liftlog 100 system has no impact on rated lift capacity and the trucks can operate as normal. RSC logistics manager Gary Wright says the use of the weighing system has signifi-cantly speeded up the manufacturing process.

The auditorium, complete with everything required to put on the production, including stage, props, costumes and over-head rigging and winch gear, were shipped to New York in 13.4m high cube shipping containers in May.

When the containers arrived in Park Avenue Armory in June, a crane lifted them in a specific order, placing them in their designated positions in the military drill hall to fulfill a sec-

ondary role as backstage flooring with timber cladding construct-ed on top.

“We need to know the weight of each container for supplying to the shippers and crane company in New York so the Liftlog 100 systems will come into their own during the loading process,” Wright explains.

He adds that the huge and prestigious project is “very much a British affair”, from in-house design and engineering to material and product sourced from the UK where possible, including the Liftlog.

, observes RDS Technology

With t he industry increasingly looking for a rapid turnaround of stock and with increased attention being paid to pallet weights, the requirement for check-weighing on a forklift truck at Goods In and Out sites has risen dramatically over recent years, reports RDS Technology.

The firm continues: “Systems such as the Liftlog 100+ on-board weighing system from RDS Technology have proven a great suc-cess with companies looking to run loading and unloading op-erations in a more efficient manner and ensure the accuracy of load and pallet weights.” Hydraulic weighing options are said to be a user-friendly and affordable method of providing a guide to weight.

Although they lack the high level of accuracy offered by load cell based systems, their cost-effectiveness makes hydraulic weighing a solution for applications where a guide to weight is needed or weight limits are to be adhered to. This permits a fast and reli-able verification of a pre-stated weight on the pallet and avoids discrepancies. Check-weighing on the forklift also reduces time consuming and inefficient vehicle movements to a floor mounted platform scale in a remote part of the warehouse or loading area, reducing jams and increasing site safety.

Onboard weighing systems can be fitted to new and used vehi-cles with minimal machine downtime and comes with full back up from specialist RDS distributors.

Liftlog 100 systems are designed and manufactured at RDS head-quarters near Stroud, Gloucestershire. They can be used on any type of hydraulic-based loading equipment.

A Stock Management Solution

Mozambique and Zambia.

Our ARTEMIS solution is a surface mapping laser device which scans and plots the entire surface

area of a stockpile, using one or multiple scanners. This is accomplished by taking over 10 000 dis-tance measurements, per scanner, over the surface of the stockpile. From the plotted surface area, a point cloud is formed creating a 3D profi le of the stockpile. By using this point cloud and tak-ing into account ground levels, structures present and/or the storage vessel dimensions, we are able to accurately calculate the volume of the stored

product.

The ART Software platform is the brains behind the system, providing valuable functionalities to assist with fi nance, collateral management, logistics, marketing and production. The ARTEMIS scan-ners communicate wirelessly to a dedicated ART PC on-site. Here all the scan data is processed and displayed on the graphic interface. This interface shows site summaries, occupied and available tonnages, communication statuses, grades, 3D graphic representations and histories. The ART PC

RONIN provides a pit-to-port stock management solution by providing constant knowledge and control of stock levels, grades, sizing, locations and daily reconciliations between book and actual physical values. This is done by utilizing our ARTEMIS LA-SER SCANNERS and pro-prietary software, ART, to enable accurate 3D sur-face mapping, stock man-agement and accounting.

Whether in the mining, milling, trading, smelting or industrial sectors, pro-duction, fi nancial, collat-eral, marketing and logis-tic managers constantly have a need for more accurate stock manage-ment and technology.

RONIN is a solutions company catering to the needs of these bulk commodity handlers in the form of accurate, laser based, inventory manage-ment systems and surveying. The Ronin group comprises of offi ces in Johannesburg and Richards Bay in South Africa, as well as in Buenos Aires, Ar-gentina and Montevideo, Uruguay . From these lo-cations we are able to service the Southern African and South American markets and port users. Ronin also has representation in Europe and are currently in the process of setting up permanent offi ces in

Imagine a pit-to-port stock management solution that provides constant knowledge and control of stock levels, grades, sizing, locations and provides daily reconciliations between book and actual physical values. Imagine having all of this at your fi ngertips.

bunkers, warehouses or open-air stockpiles. Bulk density verifi cations are also done on each stock-pile to enable us to report in tonnages. The AIMS report includes volumes, tonnages, 3D representa-tions and any additional observations (i.e. contami-

nation, excess moisture etc.). Dependent on the scope of work, reports are published within 24 hours following the survey. Our Richards Bay offi ce, Ronin Independent Surveyors, are in a key position to service the port users of the Durban, Richards Bay and Mozambican ports. In addition to the services and systems mentioned above, they provide an

independent cargo monitoring service for in and outbound cargo. This includes Tally Services, Port Superintendence/Cargo Monitoring, Cargo Rec-onciliations, Stock Auditing, Density Verifi cations, Marine Surveying, Quality Inspections, Sampling and Analysis, Tarping, Ribbed Truck Cleaning and Cargo Screening. These are independent services with High levels of service quality, ensuring cus-tomer satisfaction at all times.

Quality on-board weighing systems for front-end loaders are also available to assist with stock han-dling and management. These measure the hy-draulic pressure needed to lift the bucket, converting the result into tonnages. The Loadmaster 9000i is trade approved in all EU countries and many coun-tries worldwide, which eliminates unnecessary trips back and forth from the weighbridge. With functionalities such as an

internal database for up to 1000 products and/or customers, batch weighing capabilities, target weights, overload logging, tracking and telemetry. The Loadmaster is a simple, cost effective and valu-able solution for stock handling and management.

is connected to the clients’ network so that man-agement can have up to date knowledge of stock locations, quantities, grades, sizing and histories. All this information is ready available on excel spread sheets or any other CSV fi les the client should choose to utilise. Integra-tions enable the system to attribute weighted av-erages of bulk densities, moisture, sizing, calorifi c values or any other grad-ing the client would like to utilise, to be applied every stockpile, bunker or silo on the network. This enables current and weighted av-eraged grading/sampling data to be utilised and applied, providing greater accuracies of tonnages and grading fi gures. This integration also enables daily reconciliations to be done between the book value and actual physical stock.

The RONIN ART Head Offi ce Server (H.O.S) is available for complete control of all the clients’ operations at a Head Offi ce level. This is done by networking all the ART PCs on the various sites and processing all the data of each site and stockpiles via a sequel server. This makes daily stock manage-ment from a head offi ce prospective a reality. All hardware and Software is developed, manufactured and maintained from our Johannesburg offi ce. The software platform, instal-lation and reporting is customised per client, per site, taking into account the objective and require-ments set out by the client.

AIMS is our alternative solution to the permanent installations as a moment in time stock verifi cation service. Using the same principles of the ARTEMIS scanner, in terms of surface mapping, AIMS pro-vides accurate volumetric data and 3D graphic representations. This service is available for silos,

CARL ZEISS Inline/online quality control in food production

In recent years, the food industry has seen an increased concen-tration of production capacities accompanied by ever increasing production output.

These processes go hand in hand with the new demands being placed on product quality and the requirement for 100% traceabil-ity of all raw materials and other ingredients. Standard laboratory routines are no longer able to monitor these processes in their entirety. New measurement and analytical methods are needed which guarantee uninterrupted product analysis in the manufactur-ing process. Results obtained must be immediately available as the control parameters for process optimization. ARMOR allows you to control parameters for process optimization and to achieve consistent product quality while ensuring the whole manufacturing process is fully documented.

The ARMOR measurement probe in combination with the CARL ZEISS MCS 600 spectrometer system can be used in incoming goods inspections, production preparation, product manufacture (mixing processes etc.) and final product inspection. ARMOR controls the quality during those production stages where it is still possible to exert a direct influence on the final quality. ARMOR time optimises this operation and exerts no stress on samples be-ing tested. The high degree of automation of the production proc-ess means it is preferable to undertake the process analysis at the beginning of the production chain or during the pre-production stage. With ARMOR NIR- technology it is possible to measure the quality parameters of ingredients during this and other stages of production.

Parameter like fat, protein, water, moistness, sugar & acid can be monitored in real-time by ARMOR.

Hygiene standards and the international protection classification of IP 65 are fulfilled by the stainless steel housing of ARMOR. The optical 0°/10° geometry guarantees precise and reliable in-gredient information of samples presented in a distance fo 100mm to 240mm from the ARMOR analyser. This flexibility makes ARMOR the number one choice for the measurement of goods on conveyors, blenders and open transport systems. Disturbing influences of ambient light present in these production environ-ments are elimitated by ARMOR’s intense 50 Watt light source.

Long-term maintenance-free calibration is ensured by the automatic internal black and white reference. The broad wavelength range of 450-2150nm is perfectly suited for the quality control at various processing steps.
