A Happy Home

A happy heart makes the face Cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.

Proverbs 15:13

A family sat together in a restaurant, celebrating a birthday. Their conversation was heavily sprinkled with laughter. Conversation was animated and lighthearted, filled with happy memories. When the family got up to leave, another patron stopped them and commented that it was so nice to see a family enjoying each other so much. Is your home a happy place? When you sit around the dinner table does conversation flow? Do your children enjoy sharing memories? Developing an atmosphere of love and trust in your home will instill a happy heart in each family member and that will make happy lives that will show.

Congratulations to our newly elected MWGM Ellis Simpson who was

installed on October 25, 2015. We wish you a harmonious and

successful tenure. May God Bless both you and your lovely wife Judy.

Health and Wellness: December 1st World AIDS Day, designated on December 1 every year since 1988, is

dedicated to Raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection, and mourning those who have died of the disease. Government and health officials, non-governmental organizations and individuals around the world observe the day, often with education on AIDS prevention and control.

As we embark on the Holidays let be mindful about our health. January is Weight Loss Awareness Month. Let’s all make a plea to lead more active and healthier lives. It is a known fact that the obesity rate in the African American Community is 37.9% for Men 20 years and over and 57.6% of women 20 years and over (2009-2012). We have to learn to eat healthier and become more active. There are tips and guideline on the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition website www.fitness.gov on how to accomplish these goals. It is a known fact that over 40% of African American children are overweight and ways on how to improve the health of our children can be found on the Let’s Move campaign (www.letsmove.gov) that was started in 2010 by our First Lady Michelle Obama. It is a known fact that if you do some kind of activity at least 30 minutes a day it goes a long way to improving our health and will extend our life. February is American Heart Month and on February 27, 2015 the PHGC will be having a program “Go Red with the Stars” at Bethel AME Church, 255 Goffe Street, New Haven, CT at 3:00 p.m. There will be a speaker to talk about Heart Disease especially in women and also there will be a few vendors. We look forward to seeing all of you. Did you Know

ALL ABOARD WITH THE STARS

Health and Wellness - continued

In the early nineties my biological sister was diagnosed with breast cancer.

That announcement hit me very hard!

I knew there was a history of breast cancer in both my immediate and my

extended family. Some had even

died from the disease. Right then and there I had to take charge of my body.

Prior to this I had never given

it much thought. I had never had a mammogram but I scheduled one at Yale-

New Haven Hospital while I was

on a detail in New Haven. A few days later I received the results and it was

good news.

I continued to examine my breasts and have a screening done every year in

Hartford.

On my fourth examination the technician informed me not to get dressed; the doctor would like to discuss

the results of the screening. I began to question the technician relentlessly... “Why and what does he want

to see me about?” She tried to calm me down by saying it might not be anything serious. On my way to see the doctor, I

was praying very hard and asking God to help me get through whatever the result of the exam had shown.

The results of my 1994 mammogram showed a tumor and on February 2, 1994, I had a biopsy and the result was

positive, the tumor was malignant. I received two opinions and the recommendations were the same so I took their advice

and decided to have a radical mastectomy.

A few days later I met with the surgeon who was going to perform the operation. At this point I didn’t know

which way to turn so I prayed to God to help me get through whatever I had to face. In other words I left

everything in God’s hands.

I underwent six months of chemotherapy; and on several occasions the surgeon came to see me while I was having the

chemo.

I have been in remission for 20 years now and I thank God every day for allowing me to see yet another

day. Without those annual mammogram screenings I might not be here today.
