    TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

This is the height of vacation season, but as any-one who has ever been to Rome in the summer knows, no time to visit there! The city is sweltering, and in a pre-air-conditioned world long ago, Romans figured out that they needed a break in the surrounding hills. Even the pope clears out. His destination is usually Castelgandolfo, a lovely little hill town southeast of Rome, overlooking a tranquil lake. It has been a papal possession since about 1600, and in 1929, when most of the papal states were fi-nally lost, the papal dwelling was given “extraterritorial rights,” meaning that it is an extension of Vatican City and not under Italian rule. The Vatican observatory maintained telescopes here for decades, far from the glare of the city lights of Rome, but al-though the observatory offices remain here year round, the telescopes are in Arizona. Pope Francis spends less time here than his predeces-sors, though he still slows down the pace of his work in Rome. Vacations can help us visit friends and relatives, and revive those human contacts that the pace of our lives keeps us from cultivating. The pope needs a break, and so do you. Vacation comes from a word meaning to empty oneself. There’s still time to clear the calendar for at least one golden summer day even if you don’t have a personal castle in the hills!

THE TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 21, 2018, Year B

HOUSEHOLDS IN GOD’S SERVICE In the ancient world, “household” was a wide-reaching concept. When Joshua today speaks of his household serving the Lord, he meant not just those people who lived inside his walls or those related to him by blood or marriage; he meant slaves or servants and their families, and anyone indebted to him in any way. Even his livestock and other possessions would be consecrated to ser-vice of God. In our world, we value allowing individuals their freedom to choose how they live, and wouldn’t think of offering our pets to the service of God. But, as we discern our vocation as disciples baptized into Christ, we can come to realize how far-ranging the “households” of our lives still are: how we act toward our spouses, children, roommates or anyone we live with; our behavior with neighbors; or in public as we en-counter many “strangers” every day in stores or traffic who suddenly are “next door” to us. How can we use our time, our resources, or gifts for selfless reasons rather than personal gain? No matter what life our witness to the Good News calls us to, we all have a “household” that must be consecrated to service of the Lord our God. — Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc

    SAINT MONICA & SAINT AUGUSTINE

MOTHER & SON St. Monica was born in the year 332 in Tagaste, North Africa. Monica had a conversion experi-ence at a very young age and lived a life of virtue. When she reached a marriage-able age, her parents gave her in

marriage to a non-Christian man named Patricius. Monica’s husband Patricius, not only came home drunk each day but had a violent temper and Monica was often the victim of his rage. Patricius was neither a faithful hus-band and therefore, Monica’s life was full of trials. Monica endured all her trials with patience, gentleness and kindness. She would daily pray for the conversion of her husband, even though he would oppose her Christian practices. Her strong faith and hope in God’s mercy fi-nally payed off. Patricius accepted his wife’s faith a year before his death. He admitted that he admired his wife’s strong faith and it was her unwavering kindness towards him that changed him. St Augustine, St Monica’s son was seventeen when his father died. St Augustine was brilliant in his studies and therefore was sent to Carthage, so he could develop his talents and become a man of culture. Although he excelled in his studies, his behavior became unacceptable to his mother. Not only that he went into loose living with women, alco-hol and addictions of all kinds, but also he got involved with a cult called Manichaeism. One could only imagine the anguish of this poor mother Saint Monica. Monica never gave up her prayers for her son. She would fast, cry and beg God for her son’s conversion. Legend says that a drain formed in the ground where her tears fell while she prayed for her son. Monica would approach the local bishop and ask them to win her son over to the faith. The Bishop would often console her saying, “God’s time will come. Go now, it is not possible that the son of so many tears should perish”. Monica was a mother who never gave up. Finally the time came when Augustine was twenty nine a successful teacher then, had to work under the influence of Bishop (later Saint) Ambrose. Monica found that her son had at this stage given up Manichaeism. Monica made friends with Bishop Ambrose in order to help her son give up his current lifestyle. For her greatest Joy, Augustine not only embraced Christianity during an Easter celebration, but he decided to live a life of celibacy and devote himself to God’s ser-vice. St Augustine, was not only a wonderful Bishop, but later became one of the greatest saints and doctors of the Catholic church. This was the culminating point of his mother's prayers being answered. www.family-prayer.org

PRAYER FOR THE INTERCESSION OF SAINT MONICA

    FOR WAYWARD CHILDREN

Blessed Monica, mother of St. Augustine, we give thanks to our Father in Heaven Who looked with mercy upon your tears

over your wayward son. His conversion and heroic sanctification

were the fruit of your prayers.

Dear St. Monica, we now ask you to pray with us for all those sons and daughters

that have wandered away from God, and to add your prayers to those of all mothers

who are worried over their children.

Pray also for us that, following your example,

we may, in the company of our children,

one day enjoy the eternal vision of

    our Father in Heaven.

    Amen.

    HOW DID DINOSAURS COMMUNICATE?

PRAYER IN HONOR OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST

O God, You raised up St. John the Baptist to prepare a perfect people for Christ. Fill Your people with the joy of possessing His grace, and direct the minds of all the faithful in the way of peace and salvation. Grant that as St. John was martyred for truth and jus-tice, so we may energetically profess our Faith in You, and lead others to the Way, the Truth, and Eternal Life. AMEN.
