A Message from Fr. Tom Donovan:

The Sundays of Ordinary Time resume this weekend. These are the “ordinal” or “counted” weekends which will take us up to the First Sunday in Advent in November… a mere 22 weekends from now. The color of the season is green, and the themes, while always focused on the life, death, and resurrection of our Lord, are not focused on one particular mystery, such as at Christmas or Lent or Easter. The use of green reminds us that spiritual growth is taking place all around us, slowly, day-by-day. Indeed, every day during this time is a time of growth, anticipating the harvest at the end of time.

This year we read from the Gospel of St. Matthew. Matthew was a Jewish man who was deeply concerned about interpreting the signs correctly, with respect to identifying

the Messiah. Was this Jesus the fulfilment of God’s promise to save his people? Matthew watches intently at how Jesus interacts with the Roman occupiers. “Give unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s. Give to God, that which is God’s” (Matt 22:21). Jesus heals the centurion's servant, remarking at the great faith in the centurion who denies the need of Jesus to come to his home, but to say the word (Matt 8:5-13). Jesus proclaims love for enemies (Matt 5:44) and forbearance toward their commands (Matt 5:40, 41). In turn we also see Matthew’s concern over Jesus treatment of the religious elite of the temple and the messianic titles “Son of David”, and “Son of God”, and “Son of man”. Matthew also spends time interpreting the signs of the natural and supernatural order which point to Jesus as a special figure among the Jewish prophets and teachers. Matthew’s readings are balanced, for the first part of the summer, with readings presented from

Paul’s letter to the Romans. Paul is concerned with the divergence between God’s People gathered by the Law (the Jewish people) and God’s people gathered in witness to the savior (the “new law”, or “new covenant”). The law united God’s people through-out the Old Testament days, but Christ came to teach that the Law was but a starting point on the road to true wisdom and religious faith. It is not the Law or our punctilious observance of the Law that leads to salvation, but it is our relationship and our identifi-cation with the Lawgiver himself that perfects our encounter with God’s Law.

—- When this bulletin reaches you at the end of the week, Bishop Paprocki will have ordained six men as priests and one as deacon for our diocese. Along with Fr. Pawel and Fr. Piotr ordained last month, that will be eight new priests and one new transitional deacon (God-willing, a priest next year) for the Diocese of Springfield. Of particular interest to the Quincy com-munity is Fr. Michael Berndt, a QU alum who calls St. Francis Solanus Parish ‘home’. Also of note is Fr. David Beagles, who will be the new parochial vicar at St. Francis. Along with Fr. Pawel taking up residence at St. Peter’s, we look forward to many years of ministry and blessings from these 8 new priests and 1 new deacon.

A Message from Mrs. Carol Frericks—Principal

As Mrs. Nan Wood, our music and technology teacher, reflected on the 2019-20 school year, she shared several rewarding aspects of our time together as a school family. One was the impressive way our staff, students and families adapted so quickly to Distance Learning, due to COVID-19. Everyone worked so well together to make the best of a challenging situation. We were able to successfully finish the school year and learned so much in the process. However, Mrs. Wood noted that the most rewarding aspect of the year was our Veterans Day Program. With the help of Mr. Frank Cann, our school and parish Veterans took part in a video tribute that was the centerpiece of our musical program. Veterans, along with their families, shared war experiences, giving our students insight to their time and service. Every K-8 student sang patriotic songs to honor our Veterans, including many from the Illinois Veterans Home. American Legion members opened the program with an impressive Posting of Colors, while everyone stood to sing the National Anthem. Staff members and families helped create a Wall of Honor with pictures of School and Parish Veterans, many in their military uniforms. Having so many Veterans in our audience made the experience educational and meaningful to our students, who are now able to better understand the significance of Veterans Day. Our students learned the importance of thanking our Veterans and their families for their sacrifices. Students recognized the importance of always showing honor and respect to these brave men and women. The finale of God Bless America reminded students and the audience that we are all one family, one nation together under God. To close with that beautiful song, in prayer, was a fitting tribute to our Veterans. Our faith plays a pivotal role in everything we do at St. Dominic School.

Vacation Bible School It has been decided that our tradition gathering for Vacation Bible School may not be in “the best interest” of our children and their families (in light of the COVID-19 restrictions) – therefore, we regret to announce that VBS has been canceled for this year. It had been scheduled for the beginning of June and then postponed to July – but we feel it best now to cancel for this year. In light of the idea of “distance learning” – I’d like to offer something for the children who would have attended VBS...so how about if we try this: I will put together “VBS-distance learning-packets” – which will include ideas for the children to explore with their families. The packets will be fairly simple – but will include some family activity ideas, perhaps snack ideas, craft directions (and perhaps a few supplies), and of course Scriptures...this will all be from the VBS curriculum we were going to use for this year’s event. I will need to know how many packets to make up – so please, if you have children who might enjoy this (ages pre-school through 5th grade) – simply contact me (Bonnie Nytes, DRE... at: [email protected] or call 222-5996) and let me know how many packets you would like and how old the children are who will use them. Packets may be picked up from the church office during the week of July 20 (we’ll remind you again about this as the time is closer). If you would like to “reserve” packets – please contact me by July 1. *Again, I am sorry that we are unable to gather for VBS this year – but I hope we can all hold on to the scripture which would be the theme for this year's VBS: " Glory to God, who is able to do far beyond all that we could ask or imagine by his power at work within us." Ephesians 3:20

First Communion/Confirmation

Our dates for Confirmation/First Communion have been set; Candidates/parents will receive a letter with details including which “group” they will be in (as we will divide the classes to fit into the Covid-19 restrictions). At this point we plan to follow guidelines to restrict the number of people in attendance at the Masses, and we will update these plans if guidelines change. At this time our Sacramental Schedule is as follows: 3rd grade Confirmation/Communion Masses: 7th/8th grade Confirmation Masses: Saturday, July 25 – 6:30 p.m. (Group 1) Saturday, August 1– 6:30 p.m. (Group1) Sunday, July 26 – 10:30 a.m. (Group 2) Sunday, August 2 – 10:30 a.m. (Group 2) ***Practice: July 22, Wednesday: ***Practice: July 29, Wednesday: 6:00 p.m. (Group 1) 7:30 p.m. (Group 2) 6:00 p.m. (Group 1) 7:30 p.m. (Group 2)

O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick. At the foot of the Cross you participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith. You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need. We are certain that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Prayer of Pope Francis to Our Lady, Health of the Sick, 11-March-2020
