of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Village of Attica
Membership to Discipleship
(adapted from Dr. Phil Maynard)
The church exists to grow disciples for Jesus. Last month we discussed the five phases of
discipleship: Searching, Exploring Christ’s Way, Beginning New Life in Christ, Growing Our
Walk, and Maturing Life in Christ. How can we move from one phase to the next?
We adopt new habits. There are six habits, attitudes, and/or skills that we can develop. The
first is a life of Worship. The second is a life of Hospitality. The third is a life open to Jesus.
Fourth is a life of obeying Jesus. Fifth is a life of Service. Sixth is a life of Generosity.
In a life of Worship, as we mature, we move from attending worship when it is convenient, to
attending regularly, to attending worship and setting aside time daily for personal worship.
Finally mature Christians honor God in the ways they work, play and engage others.
For a life of Hospitality, Christ’s followers move from being glad that we are accepted by other
Christians, to offering God’s gracious acceptance to others, to seeking to relate to everyone we
meet in ways that reflect God’s hospitality to us. Mature Christians intentionally seek to build
relationships with unchurched people in order to share God’s love.
A life open to Jesus means that we move from exploring the Bible for ourselves- to
developing a daily practice of prayer, scripture and devotional reading, and opening ourselves to
God. Then, we explore new spiritual disciplines and experience a greater level of intimacy with
God. Finally, we take responsibility for our own spiritual growth through a daily practice of
disciplines.
A life of obeying Jesus starts with understanding more about his teachings through Bible
Study classes and our own reading of the Bible. It progresses to becoming a modern day
follower, being committed to being part of the church, becoming more like Jesus and serving
others. The third phase is daily seeking to apply Jesus’ teaching to our life. The mature
Disciple partners with God to help others grow in openness and obedience to Christ.
Our life of Service begins when we are amazed at the way others serve in Jesus’ name and
we decide to make a difference as well. We accept Christ’s invitation to serve others and begin
to discover how God has gifted us to do so. Then, we experiment with serving in different areas
to discover our God-given gifts, talents and passions. Finally, we join Jesus in mission to
others.
For a life of Generosity, we move from deciding to give when we attend worship, to giving on
a regular basis, to tithing 10% and carefully considering how we’ll spend the other 90%. Mature
Christians tithe 10% and also consciously reorder our lives to free up more resources to honor
God and bless others.
So, where do you stand in each of these six habits? Do you want to meet with others in order
to journey from membership to discipleship? If so, speak with Pastor Laurie.
St. Paul’s is looking for someone willing to coordinate this year’s Christmas Pageant. If you feel called to lead this important ministry at St. Paul’s, please talk to Pastor Laurie.

St. Paul’s Christian Education Meeting Sunday, September 11, 2016
Present: Charles Williman, Tom Baker, Mary West, Jen Eddy, and Laurie Bellucci. Absent: Lisa Knerr and Pastor Laurie
Sunday School: We are still in need of two more teachers. One for grades 1-4 and one for grades 5-7. If we are able to get two more volunteers the teachers would only need to teach every 3rd week. Lisa Neary has volunteered to be in the Nursery as needed. We have substitute teachers: Charles Williman and Mary West. Long range – Charles brought up about having one Sunday School class. More study into this down the road. Halloween party will be October 30th following church – games for the children. Laurie will get apple cider. We also discussed the Basket Raffle at the sauerkraut supper. Jen Eddy will be charge of this raffle this year. Discussed Christmas play – Charles will check with Deacons on their decision of this. Also discussed Graduation Sunday coffee hour for our graduates. Need to talk to Deacons about this further.
Next meeting will be Sunday, October 16th. We adjourned with the Lord’s Prayer. Respectfully submitted, Laurie Bellucci, Secretary
From the Church Historians “Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday St. Paul’s, Happy 153rd!”
“It was the fourth day of October 1863 when under the leadership of Rev. Henry Lausterer, some sixty
families met for the purpose of organizing a United Evangelical Protestant congregation.” (from St. Paul’s historical
archives)
-and St. Paul’s (now St. Paul’s United Church of Christ) is alive and well because God is still speaking.
“Never place a period where God has placed a comma.” (Gracie Allen)
God is still speaking; you can hear God during the Children’s Chat, in hymns sung, as scripture is being read
and the sermon preached. You can feel God in the melodious sound of the Bell Choir, and the Anthem of the
Chancel Choir. You can feel it when a worshipper smiles across a pew, shakes your hand, or hugs you.
St. Paul’s is ALIVE! The Creator God, The Savior Son, The Holy Spirit is present every Lord’s Day.
Wherever you’ve been, wherever you are on your faith journey, plan to worship during this anniversary month—and
every Sunday in this our 153rd year.
We are expecting you!
Your Church Historians,
Floss & Charles
Thank you for supporting Neighbors in Need!
Neighbors in Need is the UCC’s annual offering to support the ministries of justice and
compassion throughout the United States. Because of OCWM, 100% of this offering supports
ministry. Two-thirds of this offering funds a wide array of local and national justice initiatives,
advocacy efforts, and direct service projects. One-third supports the UCC’s Council for
American Indian Ministries (CAIM). There are 20 UCC congregations on reservations and one
urban, multi-tribal UCC congregation in Minneapolis, Minnesota. CAIM is an invaluable
resource for more than 1000 individuals from dozens of other tribes and nations who are
members of other UCC congregations in the U.C. Neighbors in Need helps make another
world possible. It needs your support. Please give generously. And remember, contributions
to Neighbors in Need can be made online at any time : ucc.org/nin
(The NIN Offering will be collected Oct. 2nd & 9th at St. Paul’s.)
