World architecture has always been a global concern. The archi-tectural activity of Le Corbusier, who was born in Switzerland but lived in France, was not just limited to those two countries but also extended into Chile, Germany, the USSR, Argentina, Brazil, the USA, Iraq, Japan, Italy and Belgium. The American Frank Lloyd Wright built a hotel in Tokyo in 1923; the Italian Gian Lorenzo Bernini was invited to Paris in 1665 to design the plans for the Louvre’s east façade; and Peter Parler from Germany succeeded the Frenchman Matthias of Arras as architect of the Prague cathedral in 1352. However, it is not only architectural designs that are imported. Because of the skill they displayed in the construction of Roman cathedrals, stonemasons from north-ern Italy were used in Germany during the 12th century. For the construction of the city hall in Amsterdam in 1648 limited natu-ral stone resources in the Netherlands meant that the city had to buy materials from Germany. Charles the Great demanded that his Palatine Chapel in Aachen (793/4 A.D.) not only took its ex-ample from the Ravenna churches, but that it also incorporated columns imported from Rome and Ravenna. This was a sign of his understanding of himself as the successor of the ancient Roman emperors.

This volume cannot, of course, assume to predict the archi-tectural style of the buildings of tomorrow, but it does bring together buildings from the last five years that meet all the re-quirements needed to secure them a firm place in architectural history. The collection includes stunning designs from the most sought-after architects and talented up-and-coming offices that demonstrate new interpretations of form to suit the demands of future approaches; or popular buildings that represent typical styles of the current era. These architects, together with their ambitious clients, demonstrate superb use of carefully selected materials and excellent craftsmanship, which together form the basic requirements for historical relevance. However, it is not only the theme of “world architecture” that has a long tradition; the publication of this topic in collective volumes such as this one also has a rich history. For example, Hermann Muthesius’ “The English House” (1904), Caspar Philip’s collection of Am-sterdam canal house engravings (1771) or the masons’ lodge books from the Gothic era have also earned a well-deserved place in architectural history.

GreenPix – Zero Energy Media Wall

The façade of the entertainment center combines a color LED display measuring 2,200 square meters

with a photovoltaic system integrated into a glass curtain wall. The building envelope becomes a self-

sufficient organic system, harvesting solar energy by day and using it to illuminate the screen by night,

mirroring the day’s climatic cycle. The opaque boxlike commercial building gains the ability of communi-

cating with its urban environment through a new kind of digital transparency. Its “intelligent skin” inter-

acts with the building interiors and the outer public spaces using embedded, custom-designed software,

transforming the building façade into a responsive stage for entertainment and public engagement.
