Year after year, Jedox underpins its status as one of the leading BI and CPM vendors for mid-size companies in The BI Survey. The flexible, spreadsheet based development environment clearly seems to satisfy users, while outstanding price-performance ratio paired with strong performance is a recipe that continues to win customers. Jedox is shown to deliver great benefits including faster and more accurate reporting, analysis and planning, improved data quality, better business decisions and improved employee satisfaction. Jedox’s philosophy of extending the familiar Excel environment with specific BI and CPM functionality seems to work. Many customers acknowledge this fact and prefer Jedox to competitors’ products.

The BI Survey 17 is based on findings from the world‘s largest and most comprehensive survey of business intelligence end users, conducted from February to June 2017. In total, 3,066 people responded to the survey with 2,564 answering a series of detailed questions about their usage of a named product. Altogether, 42 products (or groups of products) are analyzed in detail.

The BI Survey 17 examines user feedback on BI product selection and usage across 29 criteria (KPIs) including business benefits, project success, business value, recommendation, customer satisfaction, customer experience, innovation and competitiveness. There are 29 KPIs in total.

This document contains just a selection of the headline findings for Jedox. It does not show all the KPI results and focuses mainly on the positive findings.

For more information on the survey, visit The BI Survey website.

IntroductionEstablished in 2002, Jedox has grown into a team of more than 150 employees, including 50 in research and development as well as 25 consultants. The ven-dor serves clients worldwide through its headquar-ters in Freiburg, Germany, its seven international offices, and a partner network. According to its own accounts, Jedox generated an increase in turnover of 50 percent in 2016, mainly in the EMEA region, the United States and APAC.

The company’s flagship product is Jedox Suite, a flexible BI and CPM product with planning, repor-ting and analysis capabilities. The suite runs on the company’s own multidimensional in-memory data-base. The underlying philosophy of Jedox Suite is to extend the familiar Excel environment with specific BI and planning functionality. The solution, which offers both an Excel client and web interface resem-bling a spreadsheet as front ends, was first launched in 2004. The Excel add-in is a classic spreadsheet interface combining well-known Excel functions with additional Jedox features. The web client has a brow-ser-based spreadsheet interface – a type of Excel on

the web – with additional functions. According to the company, more than 1,900 clients worldwide use the Jedox product today.

The product is aimed at business power users who create individual planning, reporting and analysis applications with the flexible multidimensional in-me-mory database in a familiar spreadsheet environ-ment. However, tasks such as integrating data into Jedox OLAP Server may require IT support. Trained business users can later take on responsibility for the administration and further development of Jedox applications. These applications can be published to large groups of users through Jedox Web and Jedox Mobile. Classified as a development environment, in its latest version Jedox now provides predefined planning models for P&L, cost center, sales and HR via its own marketplace integrated in Jedox Suite.

User and Use CaseDemographics

Jedox is mainly used for Excel-based stan-dard/enterprise reporting, ad hoc query, basic data analysis (typically OLAP), budgeting/plan-ning and dashboards/scorecards. Advanced analysis is considered an important use case for the future by 50 percent of respondents using Jedox.

Jedox targets companies of all sizes across all industries. 62 percent of our sample of Jedox customers come from mid-sized companies (100-2,500 employees), but there is also a significant amount of smaller customers with fewer users (26 percent). With a median of 30 users (mean of 70 users) Jedox implementa-tions are rather small compared to competi-tors.

As the tasks carried out with Jedox by bu-siness users show, Jedox Suite is a very business user-oriented product. Even tasks like modeling/enriching data and exploring/analyzing data are frequently performed by customers in business departments, with little help from IT.

The BI Survey 17 provides the reader with well-desi-gned KPI dashboards packed with concise informa-tion, which can be absorbed at a glance. The KPIs all follow these simple rules:

• Only measures that have a clear good/bad trend are used as the basis for KPIs.

• KPIs may be based on one or more measures from The BI Survey.

• Only products with samples of at least 20 - 30 (depending on the KPI) for each of the questions that feed into the KPI are included.

• For quantitative data, KPIs are conver-ted to a scale of 1 to 10 (worst to best).

• A linear min-max transformation is ap-plied, which preserves the order of, and the relative distance between, pro-ducts‘ scores.

The terms ‘top-ranked’ and ‘leader’ are used in the following KPI chart titles. ‘Top-ranked’ indicates first position. ‘Leader’ usually denotes a position in the top 25-30% of products listed in the chart.

Peer Group Classification Peer Groups Overview

The KPIs

The BI Survey 17 features a range of different types of BI tools so we use peer groups to help identify competing products. The groups are essential to al-low fair and useful comparisons of products that are likely to compete.

The peer groups have been defined by BARC ana-lysts using their experience and judgment, with segmentation based on two key factors:

1. Usage scenario - functional peer groups are mainly data-driven and ba-sed on how customers say they use the product.

2. Regional focus - is the vendor a large international vendor with a truly global presence or does it focus on a particu-lar region? We also take into account the location of BI Survey respondents.

Jedox features in the following peer groups:

• OLAP analysis-focused products

• Integrated performance management products

• EMEA-focused vendors

Viewpoint

The business requirements of Jedox’s typically mid-size customers are often straightforward with relatively small data volumes and numbers of users involved, which is why projects with Jedox software are usually quite short. Many projects seem to be completed on time and on budget, leading again to a top ranking in the ‘Project length’ KPI in the ‘Integrated performance management products’ peer group. Classified as a development environment, Jedox now provides predefined planning models for P&L, cost center, sales and HR via its own marketplace integrated in Jedox Suite. These predefined planning models may also help customers to speed up projects, especially in the early stages.

Once again this year, The BI Survey underlines the fact that Jedox is a very competitively priced product, offering comprehensive functionality for various BI and CPM use cases as well as good value for money. In fact, ‘price-performance ratio’ (88 percent) is the number one reason why customers buy Jedox Suite. Unsurprisingly the vendor comes out with leading ranks for ‘Price-to-value’ in all of its peer groups. Jedox is licensed using an on-premises and cloud hybrid concept. Customers license the product based on requi-red user roles (Power User, Planner, Viewer). The fee for support and maintenance is set at 20 percent of the license list price per year.

‘Customer satisfaction’ combines the ‘Recommendation‘, ‘Product satisfaction’, ‘Vendor support’ and ‘Implementer support’ KPIs. Jedox gets good ratings in nearly all of these KPIs in this year’s BI Survey, particularly in the ‘Integrated performance management products’ peer group. As a result, it comes out as a leader for ‘Customer satisfaction’ as well. Satisfied customers are a vital element to becoming and remaining a successful company, particularly in a highly competitive market like the BI and CPM mar-ket. Customer service and satisfaction are clearly very important to Jedox and its customers appreciate the service they receive.

Customer satisfaction

‘Business value’ combines the ‘Business benefits’, ‘Project success’ and ‘Project length’ KPIs. With strong results particularly in the ‘Project length’ KPI, Jedox also achieves a leading rank in the ‘Integ-rated performance management products’ peer group for ‘Business value’, proving that it can create real business value for customers. Business benefits like faster and more accurate reporting, analysis and planning, improved data quality, better business decisions and improved employee satisfaction are regularly achieved with Jedox.

According to customers, the vendor offers a very high level of support and therefore receives a leading rank in the ‘Integrated performance management products’ peer group. As a German mid-sized BI and CPM vendor, Jedox seems to build good relationships with its typically medium-sized customers and they like the service they receive. The vendor provides telephone and web support as well as remote and on-si-te support. Moreover, there is a knowledge base and online help accessible through the company website with product manuals and documentation, as well as the Jedox Academy training service. In recent years, Jedox has also expanded its international presence with subsidiaries in France, the United States, Australia and Singapore.

This year’s BI Survey results confirm that Jedox’s partners do a great job in their implementation projects. The support provided by implementing partners achieves leading ranks in all of its peer groups, way ahead of market average. Jedox Suite is sold by the vendor itself as well as by its worldwide partner network of around 180 value-added resellers. Alliances with big consultancies (e.g. EY) and more than 20 OEM part-nerships (e.g. ERP) are major contributing factors to this good result as the level of support they provide is highly rated by customers. Partners often focus on specific solutions, industries (e.g. logistics, healthcare) or regions.

Customers are satisfied with Jedox Suite and the BI and CPM functionality the product offers. It is aimed at business power users who create individual planning, reporting and analysis applications with the flexible multidi-mensional in-memory database in a familiar spreadsheet environment. Business depart-ments need little IT support when it comes to running the system so they can concentrate on the business aspects of their BI and CPM activities. The results in this year’s BI Survey show Jedox Suite to be a reliable product with a top ranking for ‘Product satisfaction’ in the ‘Integrated performance management products’ peer group, maintaining its position from last year. Problems encountered with the product are quite rare. Indeed 65 percent of respondents state they experience no signifi-cant problems at all when using Jedox Suite.

Viewpoint

‘Ease of use for report recipients’ and ‘Ease of use for report designers’ are often cited as reasons why companies buy Jedox. The vendor’s Excel add-in and browser-based spreadsheet interface, as well as the underlying philosophy to extend the familiar Excel environment with BI and CPM functionality, clearly seem to convince and satisfy customers. Jedox’s user friendliness and the flexibility it gives to implement various BI and CPM use cases on one common platform are key ingredients in the vendor’s success. The ease of use of the Excel add-in allows business power users to do almost anything they need – including building and manipulating reports as well as planning forms and analyses – in the universally familiar Microsoft Office environment. Jedox achieves leading ranks for ‘Ease of use’ in two of its peer groups, improving its position from last year in the ‘Integrated performance management products’ peer group.

Flexibility for users – Leader

Peer group: OLAP analysis-focused products

Jedox Suite is a flexible BI and CPM development environment with integrated capabilities for planning, reporting and analysis. The product’s flexibility is one of the top 3 reasons why companies buy Jedox and customers are obviously satisfied with it. Complaints about inflexibility are almost non-existent (3 percent of respondents). The product is aimed at business power users who create individual planning, reporting and analysis applications with the flexible multidimensional in-memory database in a familiar spreadsheet environment. For customers who want to pursue a more standardized approach, Jedox now provides predefined planning models for P&L, cost center, sales and HR via its own marketplace integrated in Jedox Suite. These models can be a starting point in the early stages of implementation projects and can be flexibly adapted to customers’ needs.

Viewpoint

Jedox delivers fast query performance (adjusted by the data volume queried). Indeed performance speed has been one of the product’s main strengths for years now. Its multidimensional database has always run in-memory so has a head start over more traditional ROLAP systems. Furthermore the vendor’s OLAP acce-lerator technology, using graphics processing units (GPU) instead of CPU memory, is an interesting option for speeding up performance in large-scale scenarios if required. The vendor claims the GPU accelerator increases the processing speed of its in-memory technology “many times over”. As a matter of fact, query performance is one of the main obstacles to achieving satisfaction and acceptance for any kind of BI and CPM product.

Viewpoint

Jedox customers rarely complain about perfor-mance issues and fast query performance is a frequently cited reason for buying the product. For the third year in a row, Jedox wins this important KPI in the ‘Integrated performan-ce management products’ peer group. The product is normally used in departmental or rather small-scale scenarios with relatively small data volumes and few concurrent users, where performance is not usually an issue. However, Jedox’s in-memory multidimensional database is clearly capable of dealing with the data volumes and user numbers its customers typically work with. Performance satisfaction is key to acceptance for any kind of BI and CPM product.

Viewpoint

Jedox receives leading ranks in all of its peer groups for ‘Cloud BI’, a critical up-and-coming area within the market. Customers have free choice to either deploy the product on-premises, operating and maintaining the infrastructure themselves, or use it as a software-as-a-service in the cloud. The ‘Cloud BI’ KPI measures how many sites currently use the product in a cloud environment. Customers clearly seem happy to adopt Jedox’s cloud offering, which is designed cloud infrastructure provider independently (e.g. Azure, AWS etc.). Using the TelekomCLOUD for example, hosting including data storage in a German computer center is available. This is an interesting option for DACH customers, particularly as concerns regarding security are way higher in Germany, Austria and Switzerland than in other regions of the world.
