So entrenched are they in the ways of grief and guilt that the Risen One in their midst needs to offer his life-giving invitation twice: “Peace be with you.” The logic of the new age is peace, not retribution; forgiveness, not vengeance. With the invitation to new life comes also the means: the gift of the Holy Spirit, breathed upon them and within them. Just as the Father sent Jesus into the world, so now are these disciples sent as witnesses to God’s saving work. Pentecost is therefore the crowning achievement of the Jesus story. Now, more than ever, these huddled disciples would have just cause to sing the “Dayenu” (“It would have been enough”) verses from the Passover seder meal, but revised: It would have been enough for the Word and wisdom of God to have been born in the flesh . . . Dayenu! It would have been enough for the Word to grow to adulthood and share his stunning parables about God’s gracious activity in the world . . . Dayenu! It would have been enough for this Word to say to his enemies, “Father, forgive them” . . . Dayenu! It would have been enough for this Word to have died on a cross for us . . . Dayenu! It would have been enough that he rose again in blessing, not vengeance . . . Dayenu! But now, beyond what we would even expect—the Word becomes our word and it is written on our hearts at Pentecost . . . Dayenu! It is enough, and more than enough to enflame our ministry of reconciliation in a world in need of a healing word. During These Troubled Times

God Gives More than Enough

It is the “first day of the week” (John 20:19),

the day of the new creation, but to those locked

away in the upper room in fear, the world is as

it always has been. So entrenched are they in

the ways of grief and guilt that the Risen One

in their midst needs to offer his life-giving

invitation twice: “Peace be with you.” The logic

of the new age is peace, not retribution;

forgiveness, not vengeance. With the invitation

to new life comes also the means: the gift of the

Holy Spirit, breathed upon them and within

them. Just as the Father sent Jesus into the

world, so now are these disciples sent as

witnesses to God’s saving work.

Pentecost is therefore the crowning

achievement of the Jesus story. Now, more

than ever, these huddled disciples would have

just cause to sing the “Dayenu” (“It would have

been enough”) verses from the Passover seder

meal, but revised: It would have been enough

for the Word and wisdom of God to have been

born in the flesh . . . Dayenu! It would have

been enough for the Word to grow to

adulthood and share his stunning parables

about God’s gracious activity in the world . . .

Dayenu! It would have been enough for this

Word to say to his enemies, “Father, forgive

them” . . . Dayenu! It would have been enough

for this Word to have died on a cross for us . . .

Dayenu! It would have been enough that he

rose again in blessing, not vengeance . . .

Dayenu! But now, beyond what we would

even expect—the Word becomes our word and

it is written on our hearts at Pentecost . . .

Dayenu! It is enough, and more than enough to

enflame our ministry of reconciliation in a

world in need of a healing word.

Eagle Rank

For the past year after I did

my eagle project, people have

asking me "Well, do you have

your Eagle yet?" and I would

always respond with I'm

almost there.

Well I am proud to say that as of March 21st, I

have officially earned the highest rank in Boy

Scouts of Eagle Scout.

It has been a long

journey and

could've not been

achieved without

the help of the

congregation. So

thank you for being

there for me. We

will have a reception

at church when

everything gets back

to normal. I hope

everyone is well and

I hope that we will

see each other soon.

Resuming Church Activities

Last week, the office emailed to all SLC households a

message from Bishop Jaech, along with an attached

document from the synod and one from the ELCA. All

three of these documents provide guidance to

congregations regarding the eventual re-opening of

churches for worship, Bible study, meetings and other

gatherings. These documents are also posted on the

SLC website.

Our congregation council is forming a work group to

plan the eventual resumption of activities that are now

suspended. The work group will be composed of

Worship and Music committee members, along with

other interested individuals and those with relevant

expertise. The plan will comply with Governor Inslee’s

re-opening timeline. It will also follow the advice from

Bishop Jaech and the ELCA. We will resume activities

according to a gradual schedule and will not attempt to

re-start everything at once.

In order to learn which gatherings are of greatest

interest, the SLC office will send out a survey to all

households. In addition, congregation council

members will contact households to communicate in

person on this topic. We anticipate the greatest

interest will be in returning to in-person worship.

Unfortunately, this is also the most complicated church

gathering to re-start because of the hazards related to

singing and reading out loud in a group. Also,

remaining 6 feet apart in our sanctuary would be

difficult because of the placement of the pews. The

work group will research this topic thoroughly and

develop a plan that will offer meaningful worship that

is also safe as possible. In the meantime, we will

continue with virtual worship services.

The council will keep you posted as the plans for

resuming church activities develop.
