Thee ntries--derived from a slrvey conducted in Late 1985 and early1986--are listed alphabeti:ally by state within national, regional,state, and university categories. A brief description of theactivity's function is followed by the date it was established and ifit sponsors an annual conference or publishes a newsletter orjournal. A foreign category is included in recognition that someissues in rural education are universal. There are 82 entries listed,more than twice the number of the 1983 edition of the directory. Ofthe 82 activities in the directory, 60% (49) were initiated since1980. Of the 10 state programs, only 2 existed prior to 1983. Only 10of the 27 university-based programs existed before 1980. Only 15activities (18%) represent national organizations or programs.Grassroots strength is shown in the state and university activities,which account for 57 (70%) of the entries. Completing the directoryis a list of eight journals that are wholly or in part concerned withsharing information about rural and small schools, the populationsthey serve, and the settings in which they function. The entries in this directory are based .on responsesreceived from a survey conducted in late 1985 and early1986. Many responses provided further contacts andtelephone follow-up elicited additional entries. Only thoseorganizations and programs with a major emphasis inrural education and small schools are listed.Entries are listed alphabetically by state within national,regional, state, and university categories. A brief descrip-tion of the activity's function is followed by the date it wasestablished and if it sponsors an annual conference orpublishes a newsletter or journal. In recognition thatsome issues in rural education are universal, a foreigncategory is included. .
The time since our last directory has seen increasedactivity in rural education and small schoolsthe numberof entries in this directory is more than twice that of our1983 edition.
Of the 82 activities in the directory, 60% (49) were initiatedsince 1980. Of the 10 state programs, only 2 existed priorto 1983. Only 10 of the 27 university-based programsexisted before 1980. The oldest activity is the RuralEducation Association, which was established in 1907.Three national organizations, three state organizations,five state programs, and two university-based programswere initiated in 1985.While only 15 activities, or 181/4 of the entries, representnational organizations or programs, grassroots strengthis shown in the state and university activities whichaccount for 70% (57) of the entries.In response to a commonly-asked question, a list ofjournals completes the directory. These are journals thatare wholly or in part concerned with sharing informationabout rural and small schools, the populations they serve.and the settings in which they function.
