American Manufacturing Competitiveness Act of 2016: American manufacturers are forced to pay tariffs on the materials they need but are not made in the U.S. These taxes drive up the price of American-made products and make it harder for American business to compete in the global economy. Now, there is a path to relief. Beginning October 14 until December 12, 2016, American manufacturers can apply to the U.S. International Trade Commission for relief through temporary duty suspensions and reductions. Filing a petition at the ITC is the only way to pursue eligibility for this relief. For more information, please see: https://waysandmeans.house.gov/competitive. American businesses that want to apply for this relief should visit: https://mtbps.usitc.gov/external.

Update on TPP: Here are three top reasons members of Congress should support passage of the Trans-Pacific Partnership without further delay:

1. The Benefits of Trade Are Clear: Better jobs, higher wages and lower costs for American families;

2. The TPP is a pivotal opportunity for U.S. global leadership;

3. The TPP will help U.S. businesses reach some of the world’s fastest growing middle-class economies.

Visit www.tppcoalition.org for information on TPP, how trade with the TPP countries benefits America, as well as what’s at stake if we walk away from TPP. Contact your members of Congress to urge them to pass TPP this year!

Census Bureau Measures the State of American Manufacturing: Manufacturing is not dead in America, despite what you may hear from various national, state and local candidates this election season. According to the Census Bureau’s most recent statistics from their Annual Survey of Manufactures, U.S. manufacturers employed 11.0 million people and generated receipts of $5.9 trillion in 2014. For more on the many statistics the Census Bureau collects on manufacturing in America, please see: https://blog.trade.gov/2016/10/07/the-state-of-american-manufacturing-measured-by-the-census-bureau.

Trade in 2016 to Grow at Slowest Pace since the Financial Crisis: World trade will grow more slowly than expected in 2016, expanding by just 1.7%, well below the April forecast of 2.8%, according to the latest WTO estimates. The forecast for 2017 has also been revised, with trade now expected to grow between 1.8% and 3.1%, down from 3.6% previously. With expected global GDP growth of 2.2% in 2016, this year would mark the slowest pace of trade and output growth since the financial crisis of 2009.
