A MeageFrom e ChanceorThe UMass Lowell endowment funds make higher education possible for a significant number of our students. In 2012, our number of endowments grewto 237, totaling more than $54 million in funding, with 56 scholarship funds created by or in honor of UMass Lowell faculty, staff or administrators.
A college education can be not only expensive, but a daunting experience for astudent, often living away from home for the first time, sometimes the first mem-ber of his or her family with a chance to pursue a degree. Now, more than ever, philanthropic support is critical to the University’s success. It is through en-dowment funds like those listed in this book that we are able to continue thegood work of educating our students and providing faculty with crucial researchand program support.
Because of our generous alumni and friends, today’s students and those joiningus for decades to come will receive a better education, have more opportunitiesfor hands-on and global experiences, enjoy a more robust and varied campuslife and have a greater chance of receiving a scholarship to help them stay inschool.
On behalf of all of our scholarship recipients, I deeply thank our donors, especially those who have established a new scholarship endowment, or contributed to an existing one.
Sincerely,
Chancellor Martin T. Meehan ’78

Without the financial assistance provided by UMass Lowell’s endowed scholarship funds, many students would be faced with difficult choices. Working two—or more—jobs to pay for tuition and books, graduating with burdensome loans or dropping out for a while, or forever, can loom as possibilities.
The scholarship endowments recognized in this booklet provide financial assistance that, most importantly, enables students to stay in school. They also, however, allow them to devote more time to study and to participate in studentclubs, athletics and other activities that encourage personal and social development.
Over the past few decades, more than 200 generous donors have establishedscholarship endowment funds to ensure that future generations can access theoutstanding education provided by UMass Lowell. The funds also allow donorsto create personal legacies that have meaningful and long-lasting impact.
1,328Mo than 1,328 students are being assisted
by scholarship funds this academic year.
“My parents didn’t have much — but they gave meeverything they could. One of the gifts they gave mewas a strong work ethic. That, along with the financialaid I received, is what made the difference for me. Sothat’s all I’m aiming to do – to give some kids who arewilling to work hard, but don’t have the financial resources, the same advantage I had.”

Endowing a ScholarshipFundTo establish an endowed scholarship fund, a donor must commit a minimum of$25,000 through an outright gift or a multi-year pledge.
Donors may choose to establish a named memorial or family scholarship andindicate preferences in the way awards are made to students. Donors are keptinformed about the progress of their funds through written annual reports andcommunications from their scholarship recipients.
An annual luncheon provides an opportunity for donors to meet their scholarship recipients in person and hear firsthand how their generosity hasmade an important impact.
To learn more about how you can establish an endowed scholarship or supportan existing fund, contact the Advancement Office at 978-934-3689.

“I knew that UMass Lowell would provide a world-
class education close to my hometown of Chelmsford.
What I did not realize was how it could evolve into an
international educational journey that continues to take
me beyond what I thought was possible. I recently had
the opportunity to participate in the International Sum-
mer School in Irish Studies at Queen's University
Belfast. As one of three college-age siblings, I truly
appreciate the peace of mind the O'Leary Scholarship
has provided both myself and my parents. It has proven
incredibly helpful to me as I pursue my personal and
professional goals, and begin the search for a graduate
program.”

“I have put myself through college. This scholarship
helps me focus more on school so I don’t have to work
so many hours. I’m an accounting major and eventually
I want to go into business and someday be able to give
back by setting up my own endowed scholarship.”

“I had been feeling stressed and was thinking about
dropping out of school. Getting the scholarship
motivated me to keep going. I want to go to medical
school to study optometry and open my own clinic.
Then I want to give back to UMass Lowell by giving a
scholarship like I received.”

“As the first in my family to go to college, I am working
two jobs to help pay expenses. I moved with my family
seven years ago from Peru; this scholarship means I
won’t have to take out so many loans. The scholarship
made me feel like it has been worth all the work to go
to all the classes, study and keep my grades up.”

“I have a job on campus and also work weekends, but
I was still worried about how I was going to pay tuition.
I’m from Nigeria and am an international business
major. Now I will have fewer loans and it will be easier
for me to go to law school when I graduate.”

“As an out-of-state doctoral student in plastic engineering,
I’m paying for school by myself and every dollar helps.
Getting a scholarship from a faculty member in my
department shows how strong their support is. It feels
really personal here. I will be happy when I get to a point
where I can give back.”

“I support UMass Lowell because I believe in giving
back to my community and its future leaders. By estab-
lishing endowed scholarship funds, I can reduce some
of the financial pressure our students face. Many of our
students juggle work and school, a number of them
working more than 30 hours a week, which can nega-
tively impact their ability to succeed in the classroom.
It brings me great joy to know that I am able to help
our students further their education, and ultimately
achieve their dreams.”

“Because I am an alumnus who has hired a numberof UMass Lowell graduates, I see how my gifts directlyimpact students, the community and even my ownbusiness. Scholarship assistance allows students toconcentrate more fully on their studies instead of howthey will pay for college. This results in increased access to higher education and students who are better-prepared for the workplace when they graduate.”
