Margaret Brettschneider (also known as author M.J. Brett)

CMNC member since 1995

In 1938, when Margaret was almost three, her mother abandoned her on a Missouri

farm. She lived with the farmer and his wife for more than two years.

“It’s the smell I remember most. It was the most unusual combination of cow manure

and Burma Shave,” Margaret said. Turns out that in addition to farming, the husband also ran

a barber shop in the evenings in the farm kitchen.

Using the Bible, the farmer’s wife taught her to read. The big words were put on flash

cards. Wanting to accelerate her literacy, in the fall of her third year, Margaret climbed onto a

plow horse named Julie and rode to school. “I just followed the lead of the other kids,” Marga-

ret remembers.

At the age of 5-1/2, the farm couple located Margaret’s father and sent her off to live

with him in Southern California. Poor nutrition had caused her to develop rickets, which was

treated through ballet dance therapy. Within two years, her crooked body strengthened and

she later went on to dance for the USO and on hospital ships. “Dance saved my life,” Margaret

recalls.

Margaret, who holds a Master’s degree from the University of California, has known

many hardships, but never lets them hold her down for long. When her first husband died un-

expectedly, the DOD sent her to Germany in 1974 to teach military and consulate children.

Here she experienced first-hand the secret clashing between the United States and the Soviet

Union along the Iron Curtain. Seven years later she moved to Stuttgard, where she met her

current husband, Eric, a Prussian-born pilot. Margaret’s varied experiences in Germany in-

spired many of her 10 historical novels, such as Mutti’s War, and Shadow on an Iron Curtain.

Janet Fitzgerald, Communications Director

After 21 years overseas, Margaret Brettschneider moved to Colo-

rado Springs in October 1995 with her husband, Eric. A month later, at

the urging of her realtor, she attended her first Cheyenne Mountain

Newcomers Club luncheon. There she met Edna Clark, who had just

been appointed chair of “Special Happenings.” Edna drafted her to be co-

chair. Since then, Margaret has held nearly all Board positions, includ-

ing serving as co-president with Kay Hosie from 2005-2006. She has also

chaired many of the special activity groups during her 24 years with the

club. “It’s working with the activity groups that is what is so much fun,”

Margaret said. “It’s surprising I went to that first luncheon at all,” she

continued. “I resisted because I am not the coffee clutch type. But it’s

been a wonderful experience and I have made good friends.”
