June/July 2017
The first 2 months
have been simply
amazing. I would like
to thank each and
every one of you for
your support, hard
work, and dedication.
A special thanks to
Christina Grey for a
successful Easter Egg
Hunt. I would also like
to extend my gratitude
for all of the people
that have stepped up
to be committee
members.
We have been
fortunate to have had
talented entertainment
in the social quarters,
and our whopping over
$10,000 drawing that
brought in a great
amount of people. The
enormous success of
these 2 events are
because of your help
and I would like to give
a great big shout of
THANKS! I am
tremendously pleased
with our first 2 months
and I truly believe we
are going to have an
exceptional year.
We also had a fun-
filled Kentucky Derby
party that was enjoyed
by all. Our Memorial
Day Weekend plans
include a great trip to
Camp Barrett.
All of these successful
events could not have
happened without the
support and heart put
forth by all of you. I am
grateful for your
support and I look
forward to the rest of
the year being just as
exciting as the first 2
months have been.

My fellow Elks I like to bring up Volunteering and why it is so important for our Lodge. Quick imagine if not a single person volunteer where would be? So I asked you to get involved in one of our many committees or be a part of. This is your Lodge. As all Elks on your application you mark off that you would help or at least you did. It is the key to every Elks success. Where would be without the Grounds Committee, Activities Committee as so many enjoy on Friday night or bring in Local Talent. With Sandy and I we been running Toys for Tots for last six years, I sit on Boards, helped other local charities. Definition below sums it up. Definition of Volunteering: Volunteering is generally considered an altruistic activity where an individual or group pro-vides services for no financial gain "to benefit another person, group or organization".[1] Volunteering is also renowned for skill development and is often intended to promote goodness or to improve human quality of life. Volunteering may have positive benefits for the volunteer as well as for the person or community served.[2] It is also intended to make con-tacts for possible employment. Many volunteers are specifically trained in the areas they work, such as medicine, education, or emergency rescue. Others serve on an as-needed basis, such as in response to a natural disaster. Events coming up for Toys for Tots which is 100% Volunteer. June 24th G.W Saunders Country Legend he has played with the best. Stay tuned for more information. November 12th Toys for Tots Charity Ball 2pm-7pm TBD Johnny Counterfeit has offer to come. Personality of 120 people, Comedian, Singer, Author of JFK. Like to sponsor see me.

We are taking off “Flying with Heart” this year with ER Ruth Collins Shaw! The
number of new and exciting projects will be taking the Hagerstown Elks to a whole
new level of commitment to serve our members and our community!
Coming up make sure and catch all the fun events brought to you by the Activities
committee including a Toga Night, more live entertainment in the lounge and even
a Southern Barbecue with Country Music provided by “Six Pack Rodeo Band” on
July 29th. Don’t miss it!
As part of our Drug and Alcohol awareness program we will be helping raise money
for “Brookes House” A women’s drug/alcohol recovery house being built right here
in Hagerstown! It will be a dinner and dance on August 19th from 6 till 11:30 pm.
We will also be doing a Community Safety Day on September 9th utilizing the Elks
state trailer to show teen drivers the effects of drunk driving, children’s car safety
seats, bicycle helmet safety, smoke detector safety and more!
So come out and be a part of all the fun going on now at 378!

Lodge Members:
April has certainly been a whirl-wind of learning new procedures as the Lecturing Knight and tak-
ing sound advice and guidance from many seasoned Elks (especially Gerald, thank you for all of
that great officer material!). I am learning from Ruth, Jim, and Randy and, together, I know we
can continue the good works of our lodge in this current year and beyond. I am honored to be
serving with such a devoted and selfless group. I look forward to helping with various com-
mittees this year. I know that Chris Potter and the auditing committee will be gearing up for eval-
uating the lodge, and I am asking that all areas of the lodge be willing and able to help him in
making the process smooth. I am also very excited about the plans that Amber Sharps has in
store as the head of the drug awareness committee.
As always, I am seeking ways to bring in membership to the lodge. A lot of my friends work at
Robinwood and Meritus, and I have been making it a priority to talk about our lodge (and our
goal to impact the community for good). I know that a vast majority of that workforce seek to
serve the community through their medical and professional expertise, and they might be inter-
ested to hear about the Elks (especially from you). If you know someone who works at Robin-
wood or Meritus, please tell them about the lodge. Let them know about our goals and tell them
about our social functions as well (everyone has to eat and cut loose, and I bet those individuals
would love to have the lodge as an option for meals…especially since it is so close).
I look forward to the many upcoming events this Spring and hope to see as many of you as possi-
ble.

Lecturing Knight
