Chillin’ at the Cool Pool
Submitted by Mrs. Kathy Eike
Can you believe the Melstone Community Pool has been in
operation for twenty-five years? Over this quarter of a cen-
tury, various volunteers have given precious time and mon-
ey to build it, improve it, and operate it. Two individuals
have been on the board from the beginning: Jean Lang
and Joan McCaffree. Joan has been the very faithful treas-
urer for many years. Earlier this month these two women took on the task of
loading a horse trailer full of pop cans, which netted $250 for the pool. We sa-
lute them and thank them for their dedicated service.
The money left over from the Coal Board Grant, which is approximately three
thousand dollars, will be used to buy a pump, filter, and solar cover for the kid-
die pool. Mid June is the target opening date for this summer. Normal pool
hours are Monday-Friday, 1:00-5:00 p.m., with occasional night swimming.
The first Monday Night Dinner will be at the Melstone Café on June 5th from
5:30-7:30 p.m. The menu will be walking tacos, watermelon, cherry salad, corn
salad, and pumpkin bars. Prices are adults-eight dollars; children ages twelve
and under-five dollars; and family-twenty-five dollars. Be watching for posters as
to when additional dinners will be. Thanks for your

Goodbye Foreign Friends!
By Kimber Korell
My name is Vitor Gabriel. I’m 16 years
old, and I’m from Brazil. I decided to be
an exchange student because I wanted to
see a new culture and also new places.
When I found out that I was coming to
Melstone, Montana, I looked it up on in-
ternet to see what it looks like, and I was
really surprised with the population num-
ber. But I really enjoyed being an exchange student
even though here is very different from my hometown
and so much smaller too.
My first impression of Montana was when my host fami-
ly took me to Yellowstone Park during a weekend in
August, and it was pretty cool to see all those waterfalls,
wild animals, and also the geysers.
This year I got involved in BPA, Cross Country, and bas-
ketball, which is my favorite sport. The basketball season
was awesome; we had a really good record, but, unfor-
tunately, we did not make to state.
I want to thank Ramie, Neil, Macy, Trey, and Ty for let-
ting me be a part of their family. You guys are awe-
some. I am so thankful for all those time that we spent
together, our basketball tournaments at home, branding
and other ranch work, which was new to me and pretty
fun actually, and also our vacations especially Denver,
where I watched a NBA game at the Pepsi Center and
had the experience of holding the U.S. flag during the
national anthem on the court.
Once again I want to thank the whole community for all
your support and these ten unforgettable months; I will
miss you Melstone.
Hi, my name is Franka Johne, and I
am 16 years old and from Berlin,
Germany.
Since I was little, I always really en-
joyed traveling and also learning
about other cultures and different
languages. So I decided to become
an exchange student. After I filled out applications and a
lot of documents, I just had to wait for a family to
"choose" me as their exchange student. On March
31st (Yes, I remember the date) I got a message that I
was going to live with the Wackers for one year in Mel-
stone, MT.
Honestly, the first day I was shocked; Melstone with a
population of 100 people and 30 students in high
school was totally different from Berlin with over 3.4 mil-
lion people.
Track and field started as soon as basketball was over,
and the season is still going on. I qualified for State in
four events on the 26th and 27th of May in Laurel.
I really enjoyed being part of the Melstone Broncs and
definitely am going to miss it next year.
Since I played clarinet in Germany, I was happy to
be part of the band this year and had a lot of fun es-
pecially at tournament time.
After I learned more about my host family and starting
to talk to them (or I should say snapchatting with
BreElle), I started to get really excited. I couldn't wait
to get here. I thought living in Montana was going to
be something completely different, and it is, and I like
it.
It's different that you can drive a long time without
seeing any people and houses, be able to see all the
stars at night, and that the next big city is one and a
half hours away. I definitely never rode so many miles
on a bus in ten months before! Montana is as big as
Germany, but in Germany live over 81 million people.
When I finally met Tamaira, BreElle, Draya and Jody at
the airport, I knew this year was going to be fun and
an awesome opportunity to learn a lot in many differ-
ent aspects. Even though Melstone High school is
small, there is a lot to get involved in like sports, Band,
BPA and FFA.
Sports have always been an important part in my life,
and my exchange year started with cross country. Even
though running is not my favorite sport, I got 15th at
State, and we won state cross country. After cross
country was over, JH basketball started, and managing
for the girls made me even more exited for our high
school basketball season! On November 17th high
school basketball (which is definitely my favorite sport)
finally started, and I couldn't wait until our first game!
Well... in the Tip-off tournament we lost both of our
games, but it got better, and by the end of the sea-
son, we won the conference and the District Tourna-
ment which is definitely one of my favorite memories
here! Even getting 3rd at Divisionals was cool except
that it meant basketball season was over, and we
missed going to state by one place. I wish we could
play another season together!
I also liked being part of BPA and being an of-
ficer (Treasurer). My favorite memory of BPA is the
trip to Orlando for Nationals; we had a lot of fun in
the Disney World, Universal Studios and Island of
Adventures. We rode many rollercoasters and had an
awesome time enjoying the sun at the beach. It's so
crazy that my year here is almost over, and I am sad
that I have to say good bye so soon. I would stay
longer if I could...Time flies when you are having
fun... I want to thank my friends, teachers, Melstone
school, and the whole Melstone community
for supporting me throughout the year and just mak-
ing my year here so awesome.

I am really thankful for my wonderful host family and
for welcoming me into their home and being my sec-
ond family. Tamaira, thanks for the fun times we had
together, being a great teacher, advisor and coach and
American mom. Jody, thanks for telling me all the
jokes and taking me to feed cows and pretending that
I am great help, and thanks in advance for (hopefully)
teaching me (later) how to ride a horse (because we
didn't had time for it yet), and for just being my Ameri-
can dad. BreElle and Draya, thanks for being the sisters
I never had before and all the awesome times we spent
together and for the fun car rides and for trying
to teach me how to drive.... Thanks a lot Draya for all
the kick starts, jokes, playing ball with me, and the ad-
ventures outside. BreElle, thanks for all the parties for
two, late night talks, shopping trips, and just all the
memories and the really great time we had together.
Once again, thank you Melstone for welcoming me
here and making this year an unforgettable experience.
Melstone, I am going to miss you a lot and hope to
come back soon.
My name is Vinicius a.k.a Vinny as I’m known here; I’m
from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and 17
years old. I had never thought
about leaving my home country for
more than two weeks and even less
about living ten months away in a
foreign country. It all started last
year when my friend Vitor decided to try in this experi-
ence, and the person who was arranging the trip also
asked me if I wanted to go. I, despite being a little re-
luctant about going (after looking for Melstone on
Google and seeing the population…), decided to go;
and I was sure about it after I talked with Jennifer and
the Bergin family and saw that they wanted me to
come.
My experience in Montana and in the Melstone High
School has been great; it is very impressive with quan-
tity of the school’s activities you can do. I found myself
interested in basketball and in track & field. The bas-
ketball season was amazing, and I think our team was
able to accomplish a lot even if I think we could have
done better. Our coach Jason is a very special person,
who can scream a lot sometimes… but also teach me a
lot. Track & field has been a great experience that I
never thought I would do; Ms. Wacker is a great coach
and because of her, I can say I’m fit.
I did a variety of school activities including FFA and
BPA, which I liked very much. The knowledge about
agriculture you get from doing FFA with Mr. Pierce
and the business field you learn about in BPA are awe-
some.
The people in Melstone treated me the best way pos-
sible; this is a very good and polite community. People
here say excuse me and thank you. I want to thank
everybody who always was nice to me, and even if I
don’t mention them here, I want to thank them.
Thanks for the teachers. I know it can be kind of hard
to handle me, but you guys were able to… in a way.
Thanks Ms. Hjelvik for teaching me on how to speak
grammatically correct English, Mr. Eike for all the dis-
cussions (he knows I’m right), Mr. Pierce, Ms. Brence,
Mr. Teine, and everybody in the school, and Mr. Haa-
land for ruling school... Ha ha.
Most importantly, I want to thank my awesome family,
the Bergins, who welcomed me here the best way pos-
sible and taught me chores and how to work cows, to
have sense of humor, and how to handle three electri-
fied boys. Thanks for letting me be a part of your
guys’ family, and I can’t even write in words how
thankful I am, I will miss all of you guys. I’m saying
goodbye now, but I’m sure I will come back.

BPA-Back from Orlando
By Gracey Adams
Recently BreElle Wacker, Deva Bascom, Megan Brewer, Abby Hansen, Riley Pinkerton,
along with chaperones Tamaira and Brayden Wacker traveled to Orlando, Florida.
Brayden flew out with the first group (non-track) on Thursday, May 11th while Mrs.
Wacker was busy with District Track. Abby and Deva both competed in their con-
tests on Friday morning against the nation’s best. Abby competed in Intermediate
Word Processing placing 20th. Deva competed in Fundamental Word Processing
placing 21st. Mrs. Wacker and the track kids flew out early Friday morning to take in
the end of the conference. While they were there, they saw many fascinating things:
Daytona Beach, Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, and Disney World Magic
Kingdom. They came home with memories to last a life time, stories of scary roller-
coaster rides, and sunburns from the black. It’s all thanks to the very generous sup-
port of the Melstone community. Mrs. Wacker and the chapter would like to say
thank you!

Running to an End
By Kimber Korell
Track is coming to an end along with school. The Jr.
High had their last meet on May 13th. They have done
exceptionally this season, pushing themselves and
breaking personal records. We are all so very proud of
Draya, Emily, Noel, and Chelsea! On May 6th at a meet
in Laurel, Franka Johne broke the girl’s javelin school
record with a throw of 80 feet and 3 inches. All of the
high schoolers qualified for divisonals, see chart for re-
sults. Franka made it to state in the 1 mile, 2 mile, and
800. Kimber, Megan, Chelsea, and Franka all qualified
for state in the relay. Good luck girls! This is not Riley’s
last track meet though; he got signed to MSUB!! Con-
gratulations Riley, we are so proud of you!
