Office Starter 2010 Customer Support Scenarios

Page 25: office_starter_2010_customer_experience_walkthrough

Out Of Box Experience:

Initially, the only component that is actually installed is the Office 2010 OOBE which is named “Microsoft Office 2010” in the Windows Start menu.

Single Image (SI) and Office Starter 2010 are preloaded but not installed until the customer takes action to do so.

Issue: Customers will think that the “Microsoft Office 2010” entry in Programs is Office, when in fact it is the Out Of Box Experience.

Resolution: Educate the customer that this is just an Entry point to help them decide which version of Office will best fit their needs.

Good feature: Word & Excel files are initially associated to launch OOBE.

If the customer attempts to open a Word or Excel document (Received by e-mail for example), the Office 2010 OOBE will be launched.

Once the customer has chosen to install Office Starter or another Office 2010 Suite, the file associations are moved to the appropriate application.

Office Starter 2010 Support Scenarios

Page 26: office_starter_2010_customer_experience_walkthrough

OOBE- Activate:

Issue: Customer needs to make a decision here to choose one of the three options. This may result in a support call.

Resolution: Educate the customer on what each Option means.

Customer must uncheck the check box if they do not want the Office 2010 Professional trial installed.Good feature:1 - Trial label is present on the customize window (Aka maintenance mode window) of the installation process. 2 - The trial expiration window will open on first launch of the applications that are trial. 3 - The trial label is present in the applications title bar once the program is open. 4 - There is also a visual indication of which applications are trial on the help slab of the file menu (Aka Backstage)5 – Customers can remove the Office Trial programs using the Remove Trial option in Backstage view. If you click Remove Trial, all the trial products are uninstalled.

File Format Selection Screen: During the first run of Microsoft Office 2010 all customers residing in a country that is one of the 27 members of the European Union (EU) or one of the 4 members of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) must select a default file format for saving their Office documents. This selection follows the choice-in-software guidelines set by the EU and EFTA. The guidelines affect the following Microsoft Office 2010 applications: - Microsoft Excel® 2010 - Microsoft PowerPoint® 2010 - Microsoft Word 2010 The location setting in Windows Control Panel sets the location of the computer for this purpose. Support agents can use the following links to explain the differences between OOXML

Troubleshooting Office Starter 2010Issue: Customer Thinks They are Missing Features

Some customers may be unaware of the differences between Office 2010 and Office Starter 2010. The customer may think that there is broken functionality in the product. When you receive such an inquiry, it is important to scope the issue to determine if it could be related to functionality intentionally disabled in Office Starter. This includes add-ins, which are wholly unsupported in Office Starter. Once you have scoped the issue and possibly obtained a sample of their problem file, compare with the published Office Starter 2010 feature limitations.

Issue: Problem Installing Office Starter – Q: DriveOffice Starter requires an available Q: drive for installation. If the Q: drive letter is in use on the PC at the start of the Office Starter 2010 Installation (first run from OOBE), the customer will see the following error:

There was a problem setting up Microsoft Office Starter 2010:

This product must be installed to Q:. Ensure that Q: us unused and try again. To resolve this issue, try the following steps:1. Check for drives using Q: in Computer Management, Disk Management. If you

find a drive using this letter, change the drive letter to something other the Q:.2. If a local drive is not using the letter Q:, you may have a mapped network drive

using the letter. From the Command prompt run “Net Use” to view the network drive mappings. If a network drive is mapped to Q:, use this command to remove it: net use /d q:

Page 34: office_starter_2010_customer_experience_walkthrough

Troubleshooting Office Starter 2010Troubleshooting Office Starter 2010

Issue: Problems Running Office Starter ProgramsIf the customer is unable to start Word Starter, Excel Starter, or Office To-Go Device Manager, a repair installation may be the best approach.

Initiate an Office Starter 2010 Repair from Control Panel => Programs and Features, select Microsoft Office Starter 2010 and then click on Change => Repair.

Issue: Restoring a Clean ConfigurationIf after running a Repair on Office Starter 2010, and the customer continues to have problems running Office Starter 2010 programs, you can uninstall the Click-to-Run environment and then re-install Office Starter using OOBE.

Uninstall the “Microsoft Office Click-to-Run 2010” item from Control Panel, Programs and Features.

This removes the Office virtual environment along with the virtualization core components in preparation for a reinstall of Office Starter 2010 from the Office 2010 OOBE.
