Greetings to all Lions, Lionesses and Leos

I have been spreading the word about Childhood Cancer, Medical Research (Cervical Cancer, Ovarian Cancer, Prostrate Cancer) and the Q2 Stinger Research Foundation also the new International President’s theme ‘New Mountains to Climb’.

It is important that we have all clubs work together so as to be happy in servicing the community.

On Friday night Jan and I went down for the 2016 International Youth Exchange Camp at Camp Kanga. What a wonderful night. There were 40 youths from 17 different countries, they all mixed well and enjoyed themselves.

The night started with a sit down dinner and ended with a lot of fun as groups of young ones led us in a night of singing and laughter. A big thank you must go to the organisers and volunteers.

In particular, thanks must go to Damien Mott from Proserpine Club, Irene and Martin Braddick from Tully Club, Ian Dow from Rollingstone and District Club and also Emily Hopper from Proserpine Club and all the staff of Camp Kanga as without their hard work the students would not have had such a good time. So a big thank you to all of them from Q2 District. And don’t forget if you can help they would love to have you.

Next month I will visit more clubs. These will be listed in the Northern Lion.

We have a Cabinet Meeting at Cluden Park Motel on the 13th and 14th of August.

I will then be in Sydney from the 18th to the 21st of August at a Council meeting as your District representative.

Don’t forget if you wish to talk to me, just phone, anytime.

Brian Hewett District Governor 201Q2 Ph: 0410 328 382

A month has gone by and Jan and I have visited 16 clubs in the district.

We have found everyone has been very helpful and eager to work in the community. Clubs with large and small numbers are already working hard and we need more people like them. The Club in Ayr is knitting little dogs to raise money for the Hearing Dogs. What a cause. So if you would like to help Ayr Club let them know.

A few of the participants of a Membership outing organised by Townville Host Lions Club. They took a bus with Lions and invited guests on an outing to Ingham from Townsville. The first stop was morning tea hosted by Rollingstone Lions Club then on to Ingham for lunch and a walk around the Tyto Wetlands, finishing the day at Frosty Mango for an ice-cream. A great idea and a fabulous day out.

One Million Dollars raised for drought stricken farmers

An incredible achievement with Lions raising one million dollars for the Farmers Drought Project, with proceeds to be distributed through Aussie Helpers.

Dervla from Virtual Psychologist has shared the following story from a farmer:

"Dear Lions and Aussie Helpers,

“I have been very grateful for the help Dervla has provided.

“With drought and personal issues that have haunted me for over 40 years, Dervla came into my life when I was at my all-time lowest and helped bring happiness and gratitude back.

“I now start each day with a grateful heart and positive thinking, focusing on what matters and is important to me. At times, we tend to forget to stop and thank the people who make a difference in our lives.

“Thank you for making this possible to have people like Dervla who can reach out and help, it is truly a blessing for rural and remote people."

… and psychological help appreciated

Tableland Lions sponsor local youth to attend ‘Science Live’ work experience at Griffith University

extended to include more Grade 11 students from the Atherton Tablelands interested in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

As a result of the successful 2015 workshops, eight Tablelands Lions Clubs were involved in sponsoring ten local Grade 11 students to the workshops held between the 19 and 22 June 2016. Each student was sponsored to the tune of $900 to assist with the cost of return airfares and out of pocket expenses, with the students themselves contributing $100 each.

The Tablelands Lions Clubs involved in this year’s event were Atherton, Bulwai Cultural Heritage, Herberton, Malanda, Mareeba, Millaa Millaa, Ravenshoe & District and Yungaburra.

According to Lion Detlef Sulzer of Lions Club of Brisbane Central, the success of the 2016 ‘Science Live’ project is still resonating and he is confident that, with the continued support of the Tablelands Lions Clubs, the event will continue for many years to come.

The ‘Science Live’ project was initiated in 2015 by Professor Dr George Mellick, Deputy Director of the Eskitis Institute and Head of the Clinical Neuroscience Program, together with the Lions Club of Brisbane Central. Lions Club of Mareeba supported the inaugural project, sponsoring a student from the area.

The mission was to give students from the Atherton Tablelands an understanding of the importance of fauna and flora in their surrounding environment which will, in turn, provide a valuable contribution to the development of future medicine. The Institute has analysed over 45,000 plant specimens from the areas of North Queensland and the Barrier Reef, obtaining over 200,000 molecules with properties not yet used by the pharmaceutical industry.

Through Griffith University, the inaugural project came to the attention of Queensland Department of Education, who considered it so important that the project should become an annual event and be

Health Chairman Aussie reports

Presidents and Club Members

I hope you are settling into the New Lions Year which I know you will find busy but enjoyable.

As Health Chairman for the District I have had a couple of changes in my portfolio which now include, Lions Medical Research Foundation (LMRF), Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation (ALCCRF), Spinal Cord Research Fellowship (SCRF) and Prostate Cancer Research (PCR).

LMRF has just concluded the Personality Quest with Q2 Popularity Entrant Ruth Corbin fortunate enough to be involved in the judging, whilst not the winner of the Quest Ruth represented our District with distinction and enjoyed being a participant, all the girls were in last month’s Northern Lion. The next Art Union raffling a Hyundai Tucson and other prizes is about to begin and all Clubs should support this event if possible as all profits go into our Research programs, this year Dr, Carlos Solamon will be at our convention to talk about his research into Ovarian Cancer. Spring for Research will be our focus for some fundraising again this year starting in September for 3 months and we are asking Clubs to donate $4 per Club member to assist in our Research funding. A Bequest Program flyer will be available soon for those who wish to benefit our Research, they will be at the Convention please make sure you get one and read it. Our new Website is now up and running with all sorts of information on the Foundation and the Foundation Line booklet is also online, definitely worth a visit.

ALCCRF have just released figures on the Biggest BBQ 2016and it is pleasing to say that the final figure raised is just over $250, 000.00, a great achievement and the number of Q2 Clubs participating in the event has risen from 18 last year to 25, thank you for that. There have been some major donations and outcomes in research which will be revealed at Convention in Ingham. One of the guest speakers will be PDG John Thorpe Chairman of ALCCRF and he will have all the latest exciting news. The ALCCRF Website is always up

to date on the latest happenings and has a very informative bulletin attached, I know it takes a bit of time to find the time to look at these websites but it is great information for your Club.

Spinal Cord Foundation is making progress in their work of researching ways to get sufferers back on their feet, this will be a long process but those who attended Echuca Convention and heard Barbara Owens speak on their current research will realise that the future looks a little brighter for those afflicted .

Prostate Cancer Research Foundation is a new one for me however I am learning much about it and what a killer it can be if ignored and sadly there are many males out there who tend to do this and suffer badly until the end. I know that sounds pretty dismal news but it is up to the blokes 40 and over to get a regular check although there have been cases diagnosed in males as young as 18. We all know that men will not go to the doctors and only go when it is too late, so ladies drag them along if you can. I will have some information at convention don’t be afraid to pick it up and read it, I will also have some on Bowel Cancer another one that gets ignored until it’s too late.

Research into Medical problems is the only way to find cures, so support these Lions programs when you can. Make sure that your Club donates to legitimate causes as much of the money given or donated to some Foundations goes into consolidated revenue more that research and support of medical problems.

If I can help your Club at any time on these Research Foundations please contact me and if you want help to run an Information Display at any time I can help with that, I did have a couple of photos published in last month’s Northern Lion. Doing this type of thing makes the community realise that “Lions is not just a Sausage Sizzle”.

Two Home Hill Service Clubs have combined with the Home Hill Hospital Benefits Fund to provide the finance to purchase respiratory equipment for a Home Hill man, who has been confined to his home since contracting Antisynthetase Syndrome in 2007 at the age of 37 years.

The combined project of the Home Hill Rotary and Lions Club and the Hospital Fund, which has public fundraising money kept in trust, will result in former Queensland Rail locomotive engineer, Jason Lee gain more independence through the provision of an Oxygen Concentrator, which will allow him to move out into the community more often and travel to Townsville for medical appointments.

The equipment, which is valued at $5000 and produces oxygen, allows a patient to breathe without carrying oxygen bottles. It was handed over recently by Rotary Club Community Service director, Fred Morcom and Lions Club Secretary, John Donald with the

assistance of Home Hill Pharmacist and Lions Club member, Phillip Derlagen.

Jason Lee’s need for support was initially raised with the local service clubs by Phil Fisher, a Rotarian in Gawler, South Australia, whose sister made contact with Jason Lee through a website and support group Jason had established.

Noting Mr Lee’s need for assistance, Mr Fisher’s sister purchased a second-hand mobility scooter and with her husband delivered it to Jason on their way through Home Hill from the Barossa Valley to the Far North.

That donation resulted in Mr Lee venturing down to the local shops for the first time for many years - a life-changing and confidence-building outing that led to independence he had not had for a long time.

Mr Lee’s Support Group is bringing people with like problems together all around the world and it is also helping the medical profession gather information about his condition which, because of its rarity, is often not diagnosed or misdiagnosed.

Jason Lee was initially diagnosed with bronchial pneumonia when he first started having trouble catching his breath while walking trains, while also suffering other symptoms.

After tests of his deteriorating condition at the Ayr and Townsville Hospitals, he was placed in an induced coma and was not expected to live. However, consultations between medical specialists discovered the disease and Mr Lee responded positively to treatment. He eventually returned to work but after two more flares, he was forced into retirement as a disability pensioner.

While his life changed forever, Mr Lee said he considered himself fortunate that he had led a relatively full life up to contracting the disease. He is married, has two wonderful girls who he had been able to watch grow into teenagers and he described his wife, Kerry as “his rock”.

The Rodeo is done and dusted, with the clubs getting organised for the upcoming Pink Ribbon Garden Party and the Family Fun Metrogaine. The Christmas raffle also kicks off at the beginning of September.

Recently the clubs had the fresh fruit, chicken kebabs and banana fritter stall at the Motor Home Christmas in July celebrations.

Ever wonder what it would be like if you weren’t able to enjoy Mackay’s natural beauty of golden sand or the waves crashing over your feet? Well for MS sufferer Sian Burrows and many others in Mackay region who are wheel chair bound this has been their reality.

All that changed on Sunday 10th July at the Mackay Northern Beaches Seaview Lions Club annual Changeover of Officer Bearers as the club generously donated a lightweight, easily assembled beach wheel chair to Sian and other members of the MS society to use on the Northern Beaches. To her amazement she thought that she was just getting a donation of money to help purchase the chair, but no, the Lions Club had purchased and assembled the chair.

The beach wheel chair will be available for use by any

member of the Mackay region who is mobility restricted, to once again be able to feel the sand between their toes and sit in the refreshing salt water of the ocean.

Members of the Northern Beaches Lions Club were thrilled to see the excitement and happiness as Sian used the chair for the first time, and proud that they could change so many lives just by giving mobility restricted people the opportunity to enjoy our natural beauty instead of sitting on the shoreline admiring the view.

If you or a person you know would like to use the chair please contact Sian Burrows by email on [email protected] or Lion Tammy Meyer on Mobile: 0407 018 328.

Green Tree Snakes CAN be dangerous! Green Tree Snakes (dendrolaphis punctulata) can be

dangerous. Here’s why …

A couple in Townsville had a lot of pot plants. During a recent cold snap, the wife was bringing some of the valuable tender ones indoors to protect them from the chilly temperatures. It turned out that a little green tree snake was hidden in one of the plants. When it had warmed up, it slithered out and the wife saw it go under the lounge.

She let out a very loud scream. Her husband, who was taking a shower, ran out into the living room naked to see what the problem was. She told him there was a snake under the lounge, so he got down on the floor on his hands and knees to look for it. About that time, the family dog came and cold-nosed him on the behind.

He thought the snake had bitten him, so he screamed and fell over on the floor. His wife thought he’d had a heart attack, so she covered him up, told him to lie still and called an ambulance.

The paramedics rushed in, ignored his protests, loaded him onto the stretcher and started carrying him out. Just then, the snake came out from under the lounge and one of the paramedics saw it and dropped his end of the stretcher, breaking the man’s leg.

The wife still had the problem of the snake in the house, so she called the neighbour, who volunteered to capture the snake. He armed himself with a rolled up newspaper and began poking under the lounge, but as he couldn’t find it, he told the woman it had gone.

She sat down on the lounge in relief, dangling her hand in between the cushions, where she felt the snake wriggling around.

She screamed and fainted, which caused the snake to slither back under the lounge. The neighbour, seeing her lying there passed out, tried to use CPR, just as his wife returned from shopping at Woolies. She saw her

husband ‘kissing’ their neighbour and slammed him on the back of the head with a bag of canned goods, knocking him out.

The noise woke the woman from her dead faint and she saw her neighbour lying on the floor with his wife bending over him, assumed the snake had bitten him, got a bottle of whiskey and began pouring it down the man’s throat.

By now, the police had arrived. They saw the unconscious man, smelled the whiskey and assumed a drunken fight had occurred. They were about to arrest them all, when the women tried to explain how it had all happened over a little garden snake!

The police called back the ambulance, which took away the neighbour and his sobbing wife. Now the little snake once again crawled out from under the lounge and one of the policemen drew his gun and fired at it. He missed the snake and hit the leg of the end table, which fell over. The lamp on it shattered and the bulb broke, starting a fire in the curtains.

The other policeman tried to beat out the flames and fell through the window into the yard on top of the family dog, who, startled, jumped up and raced into the street, where an oncoming car swerved to avoid it and smashed into the parked police car.

Meanwhile, neighbours saw the burning curtains and called in the fire brigade. The firemen had started raising the fire ladder when they were halfway down the street. The rising ladder tore out the overhead wires, put out the power and disconnected the power in a ten-square city block area (but they did get the house fire out).

Time passed, the snake was caught and both men were discharged from the hospital, the house was repaired, the dog came home, the police acquired a new car and all was right in their world.

A while later, they were watching TV and the weatherman announced a cold snap for that night. The wife asked her husband if he thought they should bring in their plants for the night.

And that’s when he shot her.
