To The members of NGAUs:

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the great state of Wisconsin and the 133rd General Conference of the National Guard Association of the United States.

Wisconsin is known around the country and around the world as the Dairy State, but Wisconsin is more than just the land of milk and cheese, and brats and beer. We are a state filled with patriotism that is enormously proud of the men and women who have worn the uniform to serve our country.

Our state has its share of famous military heroes like Arthur MacArthur, a Civil War Medal of Honor recipient and father of General Douglas MacArthur; Brigadier General Billy Mitchell, a World War I flying ace and father of the Air Force; and Major Richard Bong, another Medal of Honor recipient and the leading flying ace of World War II.

But it’s the everyday Citizen-Soldiers and Airmen of our National Guard that we are most proud of; men and women who serve, not for the recognition, but for their love of country and dedication to others.

It’s those selfless men and women that make it a particular privilege and a distinct honor to serve as commander-in-chief of the 10,000-member Wisconsin National Guard. I have attended sendoff ceremonies and “welcome home” ceremonies to let our Citizen-Soldiers know how grateful our state is for their service.

Our nation is known as a beacon of freedom around the globe. That freedom comes at a high cost — it’s paid for with the service and sacrifice of the men and women in uniform. You all know this truth better than I. Yours’ is a noble calling, and I salute you.

Once again, welcome to Milwaukee and welcome to Wisconsin. My wife, Tonette, and I invite you to discover what makes this such a special place.

To my felloW NGAUs members:

On behalf of the 10,000 men and women of the Wisconsin National Guard, it is my pleasure to welcome you to

Milwaukee and the great state of Wisconsin.

Milwaukee is an iconic part of America. Once upon a time it was known for its breweries — a blue-ribbon winner, one that claimed to make

Milwaukee famous, and one associated with the end of the workday and the start of relaxation. It is

known today for its many ethnic festivals as well as the world’s largest music festival — Summerfest. You may have

seen the Quadracci Pavilion — or more specifically, the dramatic Burke Briese Soliel designed by Santiago Calatrava — come to life in the recent Transformers movie. And Milwaukee was home to the fictional characters of Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, and That ‘70s Show.

Back in the real world, Milwaukee is home to Harley-Davidson — is there a company any more steeped in American lore? See for yourself—the Governor’s Reception this year will be at the Harley-Davidson Museum.

Another iconic part of America is the Citizen-Soldier and Citizen-Airman who make up the National Guard — everyday men and women who, when called upon, leave their homes, their families and jobs to serve our nation. Every year we see the value we bring to our communities when we answer the call for floods, tornadoes, snowstorms and other emergencies. Over the past 10 years, we have brought an inestimable value to our nation as warfighters, standing shoulder to shoulder with our active-duty counterparts in the global war on terror.

This conference offers a great opportunity to learn from each other, renew old friendships and start new ones. As an organization, we have a lot to share and a lot to offer. The grand city of Milwaukee also has a lot to offer, and I invite you to find out for yourself during your stay here.

Thank you for attending this year’s conference, and once again, welcome to Milwaukee.

Sincerely,

Don DunbarBrigadier General (WI)The Adjutant General
