RMOND MAKE IT NINE IN A ROWCOBURG DOWN TO ST. BERNARD'S

IVANHOE BREAK THE ICEBy GEORGE McTAGGART

Ormond completed the cycle of beating every team in turn when theyfinished 23 points to the good against North Old Boys last Saturday .

It was Ormond's ninth win in succession - their only defeat for the seasonbeing by North in the opening round.

St. Bernard's beat Coburg by a goal in a game that was close all day, andmoved up to second place . Coburg's defeat tumbled them out of the four.

Ivanhoe, after troubling some of the leading teams in recent matches, finally broke the ice at Geelong's expense. They won by seven goals.

Ormond hopped off with 7 goals inthe first quarter to gain a 4-goal leadover North, and North never recover-ed . Ormond kicked another 7 goals inthe third term to lead by almost 8goal's but North came back well inthe last quarter

. Ormond's backing-up was 'a featur eof their play and their good fieldkicking was another factor in theirwin .

The evenness of the Coburg-St .Bernard's game can be seen from thefact that Coburg led by a goal at theend of each of the first three quarters, but they managed only 3 points inthe last and St . Bernard's kicked 2-3to gain the points.

Ivanhoe broke away from Geelongwhen they added 7 .4 to 2 .4 in thesecond quarter and were in a soundposition at the interval with a 34-point lead . Geelong did a little betterin the second half but made no im-pression on their big leeway.

The back lines were on top in thefirst half of the. University Blues-Caulfield Grammar encounter, withCaulfield edging to a 17-point lead atthe interval after an even first term .

Caulfield took charge in the thirdquarter and were more than 8 goals infront at one stage . But the Blues hitback with 2 goals just before three-quarter-time, and another three inquick time in the last gave them achance of pulling it off, but Caulfieldsteadied and won by 31 points .

It was even for the first half of theOld Paradians-Monash Blues game, then Monash broke clear in the thirdterm and went to a 5-goal lead . ButParade fought back to within 2 pointsat the last change . That was the endof it for them though, and Monashfinished on well to win by more than6 goals .

University Blacks scored a 57-pointwin over Old Carey and knockedthem out of the four in doing so .Blacks went in to replace them.

Kew thrashed Old Scotch and Re-servoir did the same to MelbourneHigh. Collegians had more than 5goals to spare from Assumption andOld Trinity beat De La Salle by 23points.

Old Melburnians put up a disap-pointing display against Parkside inthe game at Elsternwick Park, goin g

down by nearly 12 goals . PowerHouse beat Fairfield by only a goalwhile bottom team, National Bank, surprised Old Haileybury, beatingthem by 23 points .

Marcellin had an easy win overCommonwealth Bank, whose accurateshooting for goal (12 .1) was a featureof the game .

AJAX beat Glenhuntly by only 3points and AMP Society scored fromFootscray Tech by a similar margin .It was a good effort by Tech ., whohave not won a match . Old Camber-well easily beat Elsternwick and OldIvanhoe had little trouble in disposingof West Brunswick .

Monash Whites lost top place in FSection when they went down to OldMentonians by 22 points . Fawkner, who scored by nearly 8 goals fromLaTrobe Reds, are clear leaders.

Junior Section leaders, UniversityBlues, had only 14 points to sparefrom Ivanhoe (14.23 to 14.9) . NorthOld Boys crashed against Ormond, going down by 45 points .

In Section 2, Beverley Hills scoredeasily from Old Brighton, but Park-side beat West Brunswick by only 15points .

SNOWSSTORM

It's absolutely in-credible this gamecalled footy . Afterknockin' off sidesright, left and cen-tre we turn outlast Saturdee to bewhopped by anotherone of the bottomsides . I really dun-

no . Makes me blood boil . And makes mewonder why I ever took on this coachin'caper .

I won't go into detail about the game'cept that we played like a pack of oldsheilas . It was un~beleviable . We couldn'tmark. Couldn't pick up the pill . Almost as ifall me blokes, bar none, 'ad been out onthe tear the night before .

Not much use complainin' it's onto to-day's game which is gunna be a toughie .We're now well outa the four and brotherit's gunna be touch and go to make thefinals.

After our loss everyone thought I'd dome lolly at the practise during the week .But I didn't . Kept me cool and just ran 'eminto the ground .

Not that me boys are'nt fit but they justneed a good swift kick in the --- to bring'em to life.

Actually this time of the season's a bitrich on an old fella like me. The freezingcold nights at trainin' . I mean, cripes, it'ssoldiers bold .

Gotta admit I'm glad to hit the cot andturn on me Linda.

Well, enough of me trivia. Down to theimportant things in life like winning andsinkin' a few frooties after the match.

See you'se next week with all the grimdetails .

100 UP TO O.M.'s FULL-BACKOld Melburnian players and supporters

congratulate Dave 'Turkey' Urquhart whoplays his 100th game today against OldXaverians . One of the club's most consistentplayers since he joined in 1967, winningthe Best and Fairest in 1971 and alwaysprominent in other years . A very deter-mined and gutsy player, always throwinghimself through packs after the ball, gen-erally coming out with it too! The last twoyears he has filled the full back positionwhere he continues to starve the oppositionforwards for kicks . Congratulations Turkey' .Everyone associated with the club wishesyou every success in the future.

UMPIRE'S CORNE RAnswers to queries by coach 9 .6 .73

1 . Shepherding in the ruck is an infringe-ment of the rules and should be penalis-ed .

2 . A player on or over the ball is deemedto be in possession of it, and if tackledcorrectly should be penalised for "hold-ing the ball" .NOTE! If the player over the ball ismaking a deliberate attempt to get rid ofthe ball, but is unable to do so, itwould be "ball up" .

3 . This query refers to an injured playerin the centre square, at the time ofbouncing the ball after a goal has beenscored .This rule as laid down by the AustralianFootball Council is quite clear .Four players only from each team areallowed in the centre square at time ofbouncing the ball after a goal .But = if a player is so badly injuredthat he is unable to be moved withoutthe aid of a stretcher, etc ., the umpirewould use common sense and allow timefor such injured player to be taken outof the square and removed from theground .

BOUNDARY UMPIRE SIt is your duty as an umpire to strictly

police the centre square when the umpire isabout to bounce the ball after a goal, orat the start of each quarter .

Do not be afraid to give your decisionif more than four players from each teamare in the centre square.

TIMEKEEPERSYou should sound the bell or siren until

the field umpire has heard it, and hassignalled that he has heard it.

Last week a time keeper sitting in amotor car rang a bell and play went on forat least 20 seconds during which time agoal was scored .

Do not blame the field umpire. Keep ring-ing the bell .

SOCIALJuly 16th is the night for TV Ringside ,

Peter Fiel has tickets at $1 .00 each .

An umpire turned up for training lastThursday with two left boots . He didn't getout of it - was made to run in bare feet.

DO YOU KNOW QUIZ1 . What happens if a player will not "kick

off" when directed to do so by the Heldumpire (time on being added) .

2 If a player awarded a mark or free kickis unable to take such kick, can his team-mate be given the kick .

3 . If a player is going for a mark and inter-feres with an opponent from behind - isit a free kick?

BALL BRIEFS150 UP TO AMP DEFENDER

A .M .P . Society's Mick Johnson today playshis 150th game with the club . Now in his11th year, Mick has played most of his foot-ball on the half-back line, although he hasbeen known to front up at cen,tre-half for-ward or on an adjacent flank on odd oc-

casions . His best season was probably 1971when he was captain of the reserves, andmanaged to cap off a fine year by winningthe Reserves Best and Fairest award. A verypopular clubman, Johno's mild manner offthe field changes to a determined and des-perate attitude when he steps onto theground . Congratulations on this greatachievement, Johno . Everybody associatedwith the club wishes you every success forthe future .

OLD HAILEYBURY MAN REACHES 150All players and supporters of Old Halley-

bury extend their warmest congratulationsto John Rigby on playing his 150th game forthe club today . He has been a strong andvocal member of the defence for most ofhis games with both firsts and reserves, al-though he has managed to kick the grandtotal of 19 goals in his career. Well done,John . We all hope the next 50 will be asgood as the last 150 .

100 UP TO AN O .G .G .One of O .G .G .'s stalwarts 'Mafia Mike'

Rigg reached the hundred two weeks ago andthe club would like to thank him for hisefforts . He has given great service to thereserves, and occasionally to the firsts whenthe selectors got daring, and as well hasserved time on the committee and has beenserretary of the club . Well done, Mike, andkeep it going.

We'd also like to congratulate two otherplayers for reaching their 50th games,Andy Jenkins last week and Rob McGuinessthis week .

CENTURY TO ALPHINGTON PLAYERJohn Ermacora played his 100th game for

Alphington. He has played most of these onthe back line although he once kicked abundle of goals when he talked his wayup to the forward line.

ST . KEV'S HAVE A CENTURYAll " at St . Kev's congratulate Phil Simon

who plays his 100th game today . Phil hasbeen with the club nine years during whichtime he has played most of his games onthe forward flank and the back pocket.Great effort Phillip . Let's hope your pre-sent great form continues for many moregames .

Terry Gaven plays his 50th game with St .Kev's also today . Since joining us in 1969Terry has been a prolific goal kicker in thereserves, heading the list in 1972 . Keep upthe form Terry .

PARKSIDER'S CENTURYCongratulations from all at Parkside to

Ray Moore on playing his 100th game lastSaturday . Many people in Ray's positionwould have given the game away as earlyin his career he found it very hard tocement a regular p lace in the side . How-ever last year after showing great im-provement, Ray was rewarded with bothplaying in a premiership side and the MostImproved Trophy . Now he is one of theregulars and his game continues to improve .Well done Ray, keep the good work going .

It is a big day at Marcellin today in thatwe celebrate the 50th games of popular Re-serves captain Dick Bartley and our "LittleChimp" Chris Mahon . Dick joined the clubin 1968 (the foundation year) and was ap-pointed vice captain of the Reserves lastyear. He has played in many positions forthe Eagles where his enthusiasm and tena-city make him hard to beat . CongratulationsDick on your first 50 - we all wish youwell for the next .

The "Chimp" came from the College sideof 1970 to the Eagles in 1971 where hequickly established himself in the seniorside . All his 50 games have been with thefirsts . As a rover half forward or centreman, Chris' marking, disposal and elusive-ness have made him an invaluable player tous He won the club's Best and Fairestaward in 1972 and could easily make thattwo in a row on present form . It is toChris and all our young players that welook to the future - and success in theV .A .F.A . From all at Eagle-land well played" Chimpy" .

Congratulations to one of the quiet menof Parkside, Gary Jordan, on playing his50th game today. Ga ry 's form has improvedgreatly this year and he has finally justifi edthe opinions of the so-called better judges ofthe club . We hope this improvement con-tinues and he establishes a permanent posi-tion in the senior side and continues toserve the club well on his way to the "ton"and onwards .

100 GA ME S TO ORMOND UTILITY

Congratulations to Peter McInerney ofOrmond who takes the fi eld today for his100th game with the club . Since joiningOrmond Peter has proved to be a fi neplayer for the club and is a "utility" inevery sense of the word . He representedVictoria at the Perth Carnival in 1970 andobtained the distinction of winning an Aus-tralian guernsey .

Peter sustained a serious leg injuryseveral years ago and has struggled to re-gain his previous form, but it was pleasingto see him win a place in the seniors lastweek . Well done Peter and all at Ormondhope there are many more good gamesahead of you .

Today Robert "Mo" Maxwell plays his50th game for Parkside. "Mo" would haveachieved this target earlier except for atemporary retirement during which he keptin touch by appearing as boundary umpire .Now his experience and strength are aninvaluable asset to the reserves and his un-selfi sh team play is an object lesson to theyounger players . Congratulations "Mo",next stop the ton .

Congratulations to Old Trinity's Alan Justwho played a fine 50th game against De LaSalle last week. Al was runner up toclub best and fairest last year, and hasplayed many fine games as rover, wing andhalf-forward flank . His tenacity and springhave helped him beat many opponents inground and aerial play.

Today our noted lemon squash drinkerBernie (Larry Lemon) Lock plays his 50thgame and everyone at ParksIde wishes himall the best both for today and the future .Bernie has joined the ranks of the goal sneakturned hackman and at the moment isshowing that the selectors were goodjudges in choosing his new position . Keepon with the improvement Bernie and go on tothe 100 .

Congratulations to Barry "Stick" O'Connorwho plays his 50th game today from allat North Old Boys . Barry, who joined theclub in 1971, played his fi rst two gameswith the junior team, but was then pro-moted to full back in the first XVIII andwon the club's 2nd best and fairest in hisfi rst year with the club . He has played 50consecutive games and this year has develop-ed into a great half-back flanker, renownedfor his cool play under pressure, his greatspoiling, his long clearing dashes and hisaccurate disposal . Well done "Teatowels" .

All at Parkside would like to congratulateReserves full forward Robert Poyntz on play-ing his 50th game today . Robert who is atpresent leading the goal kicking in "C" Re-serve would no doubt be further ahead if hiskicking equalled his ball-getti ng ability. Hisefforts in dobbing the hard ones and missingthe sitters is amazing. Here's hoping prac-tice might help straighten things out beforehe reaches the "100". Well done Robert .
