This summer’s doldrums will come to an end with the start of school or suddenly with a hurricane. Maybe we should do a little “puttsen around“ - just in case there’s a storm.

Oh, for the promise of needing a jacket to keep the chill off!

Just a heads up-- the Planning committee is working on the possibility of using part of our lot for storing member’s boats. The presumed insurance issues are being resolved, and it looks like this may become a reality. If you would be interested in storing your boat on the squadron’s property, please let me or Charley Heintz know.

If you want to more about the details of squadron “puttsen around”, make sure you read the rest of Topside Talk.

Summertime! It seems like there’s not much going on. There are hardly any winds during the day except when it’s time to run from the afternoon thunderstorms. Back in the marinas, it’s really oppressive in the protected boat slips. Not much is happening. Tis the season for, well as we used to call it back in South Dakota where I grew up, just “puttsen around”. You know, doing the little things that you do to keep a little order in your life when things get busy.

Boy, are the afternoons hot! The early mornings are tolerable—I hear Teams “Ross” and “Heintz” are getting out and doing a little fishing.

Ernie Beyer is laying out the Predicted Log courses. Pete Ingrassia is organizing a Rendezvous to the

North Shore. Did I mention that District Commander Don Ellis

and I are packing our bags to attend the National Meeting in Pittsburgh?

We all should be recruiting for the next ABC Class.

Moonbeams & Moonshineat Moonraker Lake

Charles ChapmanThis year Moonbeams will be held on

28-30 October at the Chapman house on Moonraker Lake.

Our plan is to have boaters dock during the afternoon on Friday, followed by dinner at a restaurant yet to be determined. Boaters will be driven to the restaurant and those arriving

by car can meet us. Choose and pay for your own food and drink. Following dinner, we plan to have adult beverages and conversation (remember to bring your beverages, chairs, and conversation).

Saturday, we plan to have two meals, one at approximately 12:00 noon which will consist of (Red Beans and rice, vegetables and bread) and the second, an evening meal around 6:00 PM which will be (Jambalaya & salad). The cost for the day on Saturday will be $20.00 per person. We plan to have pumpkin carving again this year (Bring your own pumpkin) and we will have a game with a winning prize of a bottle of wine.

Sunday morning as usual we will have breakfast consisting of eggs cooked the Chester and Charlies way, grits, biscuits, bacon and mimosas. Breakfast cost will be $5.00 per person.

Reservations for food should be made either with Sissy Chapman or Marlene Cooke and docking reservations should be made with Charlie Chapman.

Please make your reservations because we cannot provide sufficient food if we do not have an accurate count.

The drawing for the Beef & Beignet basket will be held on Saturday night. Tickets are still available and will be sold until the drawing.

TOPSIDE TALK 3

There is a new replacement tool in the Vessel Safety Check (VSC) tool box called "DAP" acronym for "Decal Awareness Program". The flyers and posters were designed to display the three primary aspects of the United States Power Squadrons: EDUCATION, SAFETY, and CAMARADERIE. Using the Vessel Safety Check decal at its nucleus is beneficial, as it's a recognizable symbol. Another benefit of the flyer is Squadrons and VEs can add their contact information electronically from their computer. Also displayed on the flyer is the Quick Response (QR) code for the USPS web site, plus a QR code for the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary VSC locater web site. This is a new National project that adheres to the USPS branding manual policy.

"Save a Life" boater safety signs were designed to be placed at recreational merchant locations & boat ramps. By including the form 7012, boaters will know in advance what is expected in order to pass a VSC. One of the signs is designed to have a Squadron address box and the other is a Universal sign that combines the USPS & USCGAUX.

Decal Awareness Program (DAP)With your leadership and support the Decal

Awareness Program can increase the annual Vessel Safety Checks.

Then click Decal Awareness Program on the left hand column. Click on any of the images shown on the web to get a printable version of the item. Don't forget to use your USPS Office Max discount to have copies made.

Flotsam and JetsamABC3 Online Is a WinnerWhile America’s Boating Course online has been

with us for several years, online final examinations are now available and working to bring online basic boating education to everyone. The district ABC coordinator should be responsiblefor linking online students to squadrons located near them. This is key to bringing online students into squadron view for possible membership.

Boating Safety 4 KidsThe continuum of education starts with children.

The no-cost Boating Safety 4 Kids seminar instructor manual is available from the Educational Department Basic Public Education web page. The seminar makes a super addition for educating children while presenting America’s Boating Course or other USPS courses. To learn more, join us for the Boating Safety 4 Kids seminar overview at the 2016 Governing Board Meeting in Pittsburgh.

The contact for more information on the above two programs is R/C Richard Carson, JN of the Basic Public Education Committee. Richard is a member of Perdido Bay Power Squadron, D/15. His email is:

[email protected]

Paddle Smart is a USPS seminar on a series of topics created especially for paddle sports. There is also a related Paddle Smart web site. Topics include:

•Navigation Rules with emphasis on kayaks, canoes•Personal Flotation Devices (life jackets)•Charts and Maps•Homeland Security•Weather and its impact on paddlers•Electronics for paddlers including GPS, cell phones,

VHF marine radios

Cdr greg Deis pledging new membermark Juengling.

At the July Exec Meeting there was interest and a discussion on presenting the Paddle Smart seminar. If any member of NOPS is qualified and willing to present this course, contact Cdr Greg or SEO Tracy.

named? We would like to spotlight it in The Ensign’s Bitter End section. See http://theensign.org/submit for complete details. Submit your story and high-quality boat photo(s) using our online form.

P/C Dan Ross has stepped up and agreed to fill the position of Executive Officer for the remainder of 2016, And since the NOPS Fishing Rodeo falls under the ExO, he is also accepting checks for rodeo tickets.

is best for their boats. Results must be turned into the committee prior to 30 September. This decision was made at the Captains' meeting. Contact Ern
