PROFILEEHHA

(by Jane Garrod, Freda Radich and Irene W i l c o x )

Emma Garrod, head coach -for Mt. Eden Vaul t ing Club, has a contagious laugh and a sparkle in her eyes. She cares for the sport of vaul t ing as if it were her child. Known both at home and abroad for her fr iendlyenthus ias t ic att i tude, Emma does have two major f laws: First, she grits her t ee th at the words, "I can' t ' .Second, she loves six o'clock practices - that's six A.M.! Her true calling or love is sharing herself. Forthe youngest to the most senior vaul ter , Emma always has a smile that says, 'I b e l i e v e in you.' At home inSaratoga, Cali fornia; around the world in such places as Canada, Europe, or South America; and conductingc l in ics for clubs throughout the United States, Emma has demonstrated the correct riding seat, and/or helpedto build a great kur. Emma loves p e o p l e and it shows!

Vaulting s ince age 11, Ema perforned her f i rs t 'vault-on' four teen years ago when her nother, Jane Garrod, tookher for a lesson with Jeff Moore and the Kennolyn tean inSequel, Ca l i fo rn ia . Shortly after Ema comple ted a fewlessons, Garrod Farns boarder and vaul t ing enthusiastBarbara Marshall found a wi l l ing horse frcn the s tab les andenough in terested children to forts a tean. Intrigued by thesport , Carl Avery , another Garrod Farns boarder, beganworking wi th the budding vaulters w i t h his horse, and theGarrod Fans Vaulting Team was off the ground! Ema's firstcompet i t ion was at Uatsonv i l le , Cal i forn ia, with only 5reg is tered teans conpeting. She competed the fol lowing yearat Hidden Hi l ls in Southern Cal i fornia, Ema earned herBronze, S i l ver , and Gold Medals in the early 70's.

As the American Vaul t ing Assoc ia t ion began to grou,Ehna's opportuni t ies were broadened. She was selected as afuenber of the conposite tean which traveled to Europe in1974 on the invi tat ion of Paul and 311a Lorenz of Stuttgart.Later that year the Stuttgart tean v is i ted severalCal i forn ia teans and perforned at theCtianpionship Fest at Garrod Farns.

Her interest in vau l t ing grew and,ef for t guided by several tean coaches,Davis, • presently an AVA Judge and vaulting clinician on theEast Coast, Ema developed her sk i l ls . Early in 1979 GarrodEarns Vau l te rs merged wi th Chez Scherf Hightai lers to fornMt. Eden Vaul t ing Club. Ema returned from her s tudies atCal i fornia State Polytechnic University, San Luis Qbispo, that spring to co-coach the new tean w i t h Sue Scherf Smith. The fol lowing sumer, Ema, as a senber of the Ht. EDUCATIONAL"GENERAL IMPRESSIQMX

by Elizabeth F, Searle, AVA Gold Examiner (R») and FEI Vaul t ing Judge

'General Impression' includes turn-out of vaulters, longer and horse; equipment; entry and ex i t ;d isc ip l ine; the horse's way of going, e tc . Most of these are subjective judgements to which I try both to addas much methodology as possible, a,nd at the same time to reduce purely subject ive aspects, such as my personaltaste.

TURNOUTIn considering turn-out of the vaulters, I

base my judgement on I) neatness, 2) uni formity, and 3) function. Since the trend toward gymnasticat t i re, there is now very l i t t le di f ference exceptin color.

For the most part girls' hair is worn ei thershort or braided, both of which are at t rac t ive - Iexpect no uni formity here. Jewelry .of any kind(earrings, rings, necklaces, bracelets) are a 'no-no' for safety reasons, if for no other.

I do like to see the longer in colorcoordinated slacks, shirt and/or jacket . This canmake a d i f ference in the over-all appearance. Thelonger should blend into and enhance the p icture, not look out of place or strike a discordant note. There are, of course, circumstances in which thisaspect of turnout must r ece i ve specialconsiderat ion, such as in individual compet i t ionwhen vaulters must vault w i th another team's horseand longer.

Turn-out of the horse often loses more pointsfrom me than turn-out of the vaul ters . Braidingshould be neat, not many lengths or part of themfal l ing out. I do not care what K ind of braidingis used - hunter type, Hungarian, Russian, e tc .

The style should be se lec ted to enhance the shapeof the horse's neck. The tail can be braided ornot as long as it is neat and looks well groomed.Colored yarns in the mane are all right if notle f t w i th long strings hanging down as if thebraider did not have enough t ime to f in ish, g iv ingan incomplete and sloppy look.

The horse should be well-groomed and cleanlooking, f e t l ocks trimmed and feet well cared for.

EQUIPMENTNo straps should be hanging loose on the

bridle or side, r_ej_ns - the latter very often seen.If galloping boots are used, the straps should nots t i ck out l ike a porcup ine. If they are too longthey can be taped down. The underpadding of thesurcingle should not be hanging out. Colorcoordinated boots or leg wraps and pad add to thepicture for me. Bridle and surcingle should matcheach other in color - both brown leather or both

height. Innovative variat ions in bowing, line-up,e tc . , can be interesting if not too bizarre, butthey do not rece i ve additional points from me.Line-up should be prompt and straight.

DISCIPLINE'Discip l ine" for me is demonstrated by the

foregoing remarks about entry, ex i t and line-up,as well as by the comportment of the vaulters inthe line-up during the performance. Vaultersshould stand qu ie t ly , not squirm about, turnaround, chat, etc. A steadier look is achievedwhen vaulters' arms are the same - all straightdown or all behind the back. There should be alook of at tent ion and readiness.

HORSE'S UAY OF GOINGThe horse and the longeing enter into the

general impression. How the horse goes isimportant to the p ic tu re as wel l as to thevaulters. Continuous breaks in gait , blow-ups,rushing around, as well as the need for constanturging w i t h whip and vo ice all detract, as does acanter that is half trot and half canter.Constantly cu t t i ng the c i rc le on one side causesmuch trouble to the vaulters' balance, as doespull ing out and fa l l ing on the outside shoulder.Too small a c i r c l e is penal ized technically. Sidereins that are too short or so low that they forcethe horse onto the forehand are also noted underthis score.

In trot competi t ion the gait should be a trotand not a shuf f le . The latter does not al lowvaulting to be with the movement of the horse, asthere is not any. The vaulter cannot feel orcount strides and rece ives no help from theimpulsion of the horse. The performance becomesgymnastic exerc i ses on a siightly moving platform.

black leatherf ine too -p ieces match.

- not one of each,or another color ,

ENTRY/EXIT

All whi te isas long as both

Entry and e x i t should be we l l rehearsed sothe v a u l t e r s are in s t e p . I t looks bet ter whene n t e r i n g and e x i t i n g i f v a u l t e r s are accord ing to

It is desirable for judges to be allowed timeat the end of each performance to c lar i fy forteams and coaches the reason for the GeneralImpression score.

PROFILE

KAREN EGGLESTQN - AMA "JAULTER IN CHINA(by David H. Eggleston)

Karen Eggleston, AVA vaul ter and coach from Midland, Texas, has recently ar r ived in Beij ing, PeoplesRepublic of China, for a year of study at Be i j ing Normal University. A Dartmouth junior w i th a near A averagein a combined government/science major, Karen has a year of co l lege Chinese under her belt, as wel l asSaturday classes in the Chinese language when she was younger.

Introduced to vaulting by Marcie Stiwnel andBrian Szabo shortly after moving to Midland, Texasfrom San Diego, both Karen and her brother Erictook to the sport wi th ease. After earning herbronze and s i lver medals, Karen began to spendsummers teaching vau l t i ng at Marcie Stimmeftmother's Pinto Ranch near Hemet, Cal i fornia.Marcie was a big booster for the Egglestonsiblings, providing encouragement, horses andvault ing exper t ise, as well as d i rec t ing theircapabi l i ty for d isc ip l ined work. Karen used herfee l ing for rhythmand music along w i thher gymnasticability andcrea t i v i t y in 2-Phase work, and wasAVA NationalChampion Si lver 2-Phase Woman in both1982 and 1983 aswel 1 as AVAInternationalChampion Gold 2-Phase Uwnan in 1985.

Karen and Ericboth taught vaul t ingat AVA A f f i l i a teKennolyn Camp inSoquel in the summerof 1985, and tookindividual vaultingUssonswith the superb Timber! ine vaulters. Wi thexpert coaching and encouragement from NancyStevens, Karen earned her Gold Medal at the end ofthe summer.

A musician as we l l as an athlete and scholar,Karen has cont inued the study of v i o l i n begun atage three in her home town of San Diego. Memberof a community youth orchestra in Midland duringher high school years, Karen was concert mistressand earned a number one rat ing in the stateindividual v io l in compet i t ion and was chosen amember of the al l -state orchestra. She hascont inued her v io l in studies at Dartmouth underthe direction of the principal of the ConcordString Quartet in Hanover, New Hampshire.

Classical music training and vaulting seem to govery we l l together. Now if we could just t ra in avault ing horse to fo l low the beat of the musicexact ly, new concepts in synchronized vaul t ingcould be explored!

Graduating as Salutatorian of her high schoolclass, Karen fo l lowed in the foots teps of heroldest brother, Carrick, now a doctoral student atStanford, in choosing Dartmouth College in NewHampshire. Missing vault ing at Dartmouth, Karentried, with the help of AVA Resource Person HelenYetman-Bellows, to start a team there. Contact ingboth the president of Dartmouth and the directorof equestr ian ac t i v i t i es , Karen found that shewould have to train a horse, organize and teachthe c lasses and raise the necessary money in orderto accomplish her goal. This would have meant aful l - t ime commitment impossible to accomplishwhi le a full time student. In addit ion, thecol lege administration was ve r y worried about1 lability problems.

Her journey to China is not Karen's f i rstadventure in the Far East. She spent the summerof 1984 studying in Korea, courtesy of heroriental art exper t grancfoother. Karen's mother ,Helen, spent the f irst f i v e years of her l i f e inthe southern part of what is now North Korea, andhas U.C. Berkeley degrees in both Chinese andJapanese. Karen hopes to v is i t Mongol ia under theauspices of the Peoples Republ ic of China min is t ryof youth sports later in her stay, and may be ableto show videotapes of vaulting, as wel l as f indout what kind of vaul t ing the Mongolians do. Staytuned for further deta i ls later this year.

Mail seems to getback and forth fa i r l yquickly and Karen wouldlove to get l e t t e r s fromAVA peop le . Her addressis:

COMPETITION RESULTSREGION IV RECOGNIZED FEST - MAY ID. 1986 - NEU MEXICO STATE FAIRGROUNDS. ALBUQUERQUE - JUDGED BY JOYCE 6USSENHQVEN

By Merry Cole, Coach, Albuquerque Vaulters

AVA Region IV (MM, TX, CO, OK, AR, LS, & N.AZ) organized the f i rst AVA Recognized Compet i t ion ever held outside the stateof California, Attending were Albuquerque Vaulters, Flying Star of Golden, Colorado, and Star l i ters of Mclntosh, New Mex ico ,

In addit ion to judging Saturday's compet i t ion, AVA Judge Joyce Gussenhoven ofUatsonvil le, Ca l i fo rn ia , held a highly successful c l inic on Friday and acted as examinerfor riedal testing on Sunday. How lucky we were to have her drop everyth ing and cone, afterour second judge, Sharon Davis, cancelled the Monday before the Fest due to i l lness. There were three other Fests scheduled on the sane weekend which neant that judges werevery scarce. And was Joyce terr i f ic ! She was such a trooper that, even though she nissedhtr f l ight to Albuquerque, she f lew to Phoenix, spent the night and cane on intoAlbuquerque the next morning.

The weather was absolutely perfect - in fact, too perfect, A gentle breeze beliedthe fact that the sun was hot and by Sunday everyone was sporting sunburns. The StateFairgrounds proved to be an exce l len t s i te for a fest and could eas i ly acccmodate aNational Fest. The large dorns were nore than adequate.

Although none of us had prev ious ly run a recognized fest, our show manager, RodgerSnith, read the AVA Rule Book frcn cover to cover and had every th ing under control . Muchvaluable exper ience was gained, not only by the vaulters, but the organizers a.s wel l .Highl ights of the Fest were a very c rea t ive advanced barrel routine by Heather Robison, alovely beginning barrel rout ine by Michel le Hermann, and a top-qual i ty S i lver 2-Phaseperfornance by Susie Heme.

TEAM NEWSNEUS FROM COLORADO, REGION IV

(By Kin Sonoda, loach, Fixing Star '-Suiters)

The weekend of May 9-11, Flying Star Vaulters of Golden, Colorado, hadthe privilege of attending our very first AVA recognized conpetition. Thefest site, Albuquerque, New Mexico, provided a perfect weekend for us!Tenperatures in the 70's, blue skies, and dry weather all were in narkedcontrast to the 18 degree temperature for last fill's c l i n i c and medal

the Region IV Fest, c l i n i c and medal tests were a great benefit to allof us frm Colorado. Since it was our first opportunity to compete againstanother tew. it gave us first hand experience at doing it the way itshould be done. How mazing to see theories and rules for conpetitionactually work out during the real thing! The delegation from Flyino Starincluded coach/vaulter, Kin Sonoda; vaulters Michelle Hermann and MelissaLewinej longer Bruce Brawteier, and parent Enily Hermann. We all had anopportunity to experience the event fron the inside out, frm competing togrounds care and horse care. Emily even learned about clerking for bothfhe conpetition and the neds1 tests. It was truly an informative and funtine for us all.

All of us at Flying Star would like to publicly express our heartfeltthanks to the Albuquerque Vaulters for everything they did to make the meeta great success as well as an invaluable experience for us. Merry Cole.Region IV Director and coach of Albuquerque Vaulters, was her usualwonderful self, the greatest, and her parent support group took care of usas though we were their own, Also a bio Special THANKS to Rodger Snith whowent far above and beyond to help us out and nake sure we were at the rightplace at the right tine with the right ferns. We are very proud to be apart of Region IV and look forward to expanding the Regions spirit ofcompetition and camaraderie to Colorado. Again, thanks and congratulationsto the Albuquerque Vaulters I!!!!!
