NHPA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE BY WALLY SHIPLEY

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO EVERYONE AND YOUR FAMILY! Congratulations to all State Champions in all Divisions. I attended the California State Tournament in Stockton and they had a record breaking atten-

dance for California with 139 entries. The Stockton and Northern California officers as well as the members did a great job in hosting the event.

I, again, asked the city officials present to consider hosting a World Tournament. I stated since 19 courts were already available with lights, it wouldn't take but 5 more courts, some bleachers, a scoreboard and a few misc. items to be ready. I went on to say I couldn't imagine a city not wan-ting to host our event when we bring in a minimum of $250,000. They seemed interested. I had a discussion with the city officials after the opening ceremonies. In fact, I received a call from Stockton club officer just last night (10-1-79) asking for further information which the city re-quested; so, maybe we will have you members back to California soon. Let's hope so!

After the tournament, I went up to Nevada City, California to see my youngest daughter and her husband. While there, my daughter gave me a news clipping out of the local newspaper concern-ing a horseshoe tournament there in Nevada City. The article stated they meet and pitch every Tuesday night; which also includes a pot-luck dinner. Now these courts are only two blocks from my daughter's home. Needless to say, I had to go and observe. I went over on Monday night. Well, I have to be honest, I really expected to find poor dirt or sandy courts.

What I found was from from what I thought. Here was eight beautiful clay courts with back boards and completely fenced. PLUS (believe this) the most beautiful setting you could believe or desire. It has a creek on three sides, tall trees, large picnic area with electrical facilities. It's hard to explain yet believe — but it's true. Once I saw it, I knew it had to be constructed by NHPA per-sonnel. I was right.

On Tuesday night, I attended the event. Who did I find there conducting the turnament but Herb Rushing and Ruben Lee from Grass Valley which was just a short distance from Nevada City. The courts were completed in August of 1978. The Lyons Club of Nevada City donated the fence. The club now has 35 members and is still growing.

Keep up the good work, "Gold Country Horseshoe Club" at Pioneer Park in Nevada City. I love your facilities. With my daughter so close by, I will return.

The Second Annual L.A. County Fair World Invitational Tournament was again won by Walter Ray Williams, Jr. Steinfeldt and Williams had a two out of three play-off. Steinfeldt won the first game while Williams won the last two games. Their second game went 160 shoes. More will be written on the event by someone else later.

I have appointed an NHPA Standardize Score Calling Method Committee. Following is a letter explaining about it plus the people I have selected to serve on the committee.

4 The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/November, 1979 NHPA PRESIDENT'S DIRECTIVE TO STANDARDIZED SCORE

CALLING COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN Ed Domey Heritage Recreation Center Route 146

Sutton, Massachusetts 01527

Dear Ed: Deeply appreciate you accepting Chairman of the NHPA Standardize Score Calling Method

Committee. I personally feel the NHPA is on the brink of being confronted with television and the general

public. As a result, we need to standardize calling our scores officially by using the same language nationwide. Realizing it will not be an easy assignment; not only in the standardization but for everyone to accept and remember the change of calling the new NHPA Standardize Call.

I have confidence that our NHPA membership can and will accept the change your committee proposes to the 1980 convention delegates for their approval.

I have given this committee considerable thought in its selection. I considered their geographical area and personnel who have pitched in various parts of the country as well as their experience and background in horseshoes and the NHPA.

You will be working with a very select group in my opinion. Five of the committee are past World Champions. Seven of the nine are In the NHPA Hall of Fame. The other member being an-NHPA Vice President. It should be a privilege and an enjoyable committee to work with.

On behalf of our sport and the NHPA, your committee's goal is: "TO STANDARDIZE HORSESHOES SCORE CALLING SO IT WILL BE SHORT, SIMPLE AND

EASY TO UNDERSTAND"; For the tenefit of Horseshoes, Genera! Public, News Media and Televi-sion! Audience.

The Standardize Score Calling method is top priority. Hopefully your committee can reach a final recommendation by March 1, 1980. Forward it to me then and I will present it to the Ex-ecutive Council for approval. Then I will have it published in the News Digest so the members and delegates can consider your proposal before voting at the 1980 convention in Huntsville, Alabama.

Thanks to the entire committee for accepting this most important responsibility in progressing our sport and the NHPA. The names of the committee and addresses are enclosed. Please keep me informed of your progress. Sincerely,

Wally Shipley, NHPA President cc: Executive Council, Committee Members, Regional Directors

The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/November, 1979 SHIPLEY'S LETTERS TO THE PREIMESBERGERS AND TO

GREENVILLE, OHIO CITY OFFICIAL Preimesberger Arena Henry and Dolores Preimesberger Genola, Minnesota Dear Henry and Dolores:

On behalf of the NHPA, congratulations for your successful bid for the 1981 World Horseshoe Tourna-ment.

I cannot stress enough how important it will be to have the best possible clay and pitching facilities. (I am sure being indoors will be a big improvement.) Other facilities just as important are: plenty of working members, no price increase in motels because of arrival, etc.

You know how important it is to have the best of everything in order to have a successful World Tourna-ment and a change to bid again successfully in the future — if interested.

The NHPA Executive Council will look forward in working with you. If you need any assistance, feel free to contact Donnie Roberts or myself.

cc: Executive Council, Gene Anderson Howard Schlagetter Mayor, Greenville Greenville, OH 45331 Dear Mayor Schlagetter:

On behalf of the NHPA, I sincerely hope Greenville doesn't become discouraged in bidding for a future NHPA World Tournament because of the delegates rejection of the Greenville bid in favor of Minnesota for 1981.

In addition, hopefully and sincerely, I hope Greenville will still more ahead with full speed in getting the Greenville courts and bleachers covered. (As we discussed at the Greenville Classic in July.) Since the NHPA delegates voted for an indoor facility in 1981, it is our hope that this should tell Greenville and other cities a story.

I, personally, feel it's time the NHPA annual event be held undercover. I pray and wish you success in your new term as mayor, hopefully we will meet on the horseshoe courts

once again.

cc: Executive Council, Jim McCombs, Francis Asher, George Neff, Dan Schlosser, Rollin Futrell, Kathy Harrison, Harold Anthony.

Dear State Secretary: I am Chairman of a newly formed NHPA Publicity Committee. Our Committee plans an agressive publici-

ty campaign during the coming year. We are starting off with a six member Executive Publicity Committee with a supplementary working com-

mittee member from each State. The State member would be a member of the NHPA Committee. The State committee member would be asked to form a small committee, for example, from the North,

South, East and West of each State to carry out NHPA publicity plans. If your state has a publicity director, would he or she be willing to work on the NHPA committee also? If

HERFURTH SENDS NOVEMBER PUBLICITY BULLETIN TO ALL STATE SECRETARIES

6 The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/November, 1979 HERFURTH — (Continued) you have no State publicity agent, would you favor us by selecting one to our committee as soon as possible? Please send name and address to: Bernard Herfurth, 17 Fort St., North Hampton, Massachusetts 01060.

The NHPA and State Association should have a close relationship in publicizing our sport. The Chairman of Regional Directors Claude White, will be asking all Regional Directors to help out with

our publicity plans. Thanks for your cooperation.

NHPA HALL OF FAME ANNUAL COMMITTEE MEETING Chairman Bernard Herfurth called the meeting to order asking President Wally Shipley to address the

meeting. He thanked the Committee for their selection of 1979 Hall of Fame members. He was one of the four members that won the election. Also for their cooperation during the past year.

The committee congratulated Wally for being elected to his fourth consecutive term as President of our organization.

A motion was made by the President and passed that the 1980 Hall of Fame induction be held during the evening of the annual NHPA party. As a "footnote" I will suggest that we make the "1980 Party" an "Awards Dinner Party", with the suggestion that other awards could be awarded at that time.

A suggestion that the committee's chairman's vote in electing candidates, only be counted in the event of a tie was voted down.

A motion was made by Cletus Chapelle that future Hall of Fame candidates must receive a minimum of 60% of the total votes to be elected. This motion was passed without a dissenting vote.

A motion by Ruth Hangen to purchase a suitable pin for past, present, and future Hall of Fame members was also passed.

As the Chairman has the responsibility of the safe-keeping of the Hall of Fame Book, it was voted to re-quest Lloyd Fredrickson to send the book to the Chairman. Lloyd previously kept the book to be able to keep it updated. However, Lloyd did not attend the World Tournament and did not send the book to States ville.

It was agreed that the Hall of Fame Candidates Winnie Winetrout and Joe Dubie's names be placed in the cover to year category in the voting lists.

8 The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/November, 1979 REGIONAL DIRECTORS' MEETING AT '79 WORLD TOURNAMENT

Claude White called Regional Directors' meeting to order at 11:45 a.m., Tuesday, July 31, 1979 at tourna-ment site. 12 Regional Directors were present along with President Wally Shipley and Bernard Herfurth, an invited guest.

Wally thanked the RDs for all the hard work they've done and for the support they've given him during the past two years.

Bernard Herfurth spoke about National "Pitch Horseshoes for Health" Week, which he would like tied in with the 1980 World Tournament. There was much discussion re the relative value of States holding this dur-ing their State Championship week.

General points of discussion: A letter will be sent to all RDs reminding them that an Assistant RD is now required in each State that doesn't have an RD.

A 1980 tournament schedule will be requested from each State; also, the different classes and types of pat-ches that would be needed and the quantities. This will be done before the end of the year in order that pat-ches can be ordered at one time for everyone. More on this later.

Updated Guidelines for RDs are going to be submitted to Executive Council. Basic change will be reporting times for RDs and Assistants.

It was suggested that RDs concentrate on their active States which do not now have a Hall of Fame. All of the information and whatever else is needed would be given to those interested States to make it easy for them to get one started.

RDs should consult with State Associations for qualified candidates for the Special Achievement and Stokes awards.

A letter will be sent to all RDs and Assistants with some thoughts as to how we can possibly get our foot in the doors of schools and youth organizations. Input is appreciated from each and every one of you, at any time.

14 The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/November, 1979 RICHARDSON NEW MASSACHUSETTS MENS STATE CHAMPION

DEBBY MICHAUD RETAINS LADIES' TITLE JANICE DOMEY REPEATS IN GIRLS'

The 1979 Massachusetts State Championship was a wide open affair, with any of half a dozen contenders having a good shot at the title. When the dust had cleared, a new champion, Charlie Richardson, was crown-ed. Sixteen pitchers sought the title and were placed in two groups of eight. The top three finishers moved in-to the final round of six, taking their records against co-finalists with them. At the start of play defending champ Ed Domey and former champ Bernard Herfurth had 2-0 records, Charles Richardson and Rick Howe 1-1, and John Duffy and Charlie Bonani at 0-2.

Round 1 had three upsets! Domey lost to Duffy, Herfurth lost to Richardson, and Howe lost to Bonani. Form prevailed in round 2, with Domey defeating Howe 41-33 (80.0% to 78.7% in the 80-shoe game), Her-furth defeated Bonani, and Richardson defeated Duffy. Round 3 created a tie between Herfurth and Richardson, as Herfurth defeated Domey and Richardson won over Howe.

The "word" on Richardson is that he presses too much in tight situations. Forget it! He opened the playoff with 19 in a row, the 20th spinning off. It took only 12 more shoes to wrap up the game 40-10, with a resoun-ding 84.4% game.

The finalists — Charles Richardson 4-1; Bernard Herfurth, 4-1; Ed Domey, 3-2; John Duffy, 2-3; Rick Howe, 1-4; Charles Bonani, 1-4.

In other championship divisions, Mark Bassett came from nowhere to capture the Boys title. Last year Mark averaged 18.0%. This year he won it all with 58.9%.

Debby Michaud and Janice Domey successfully defended their Womens and Girls titles, being far and away the class of the field. Our "good sports" awards go to Elaine Prue, Edith Gadoury, and Barbara and Brenda McNeill. There is more to a sport than winning. It takes a little something extra to enter and compete when you know you are going to be outclassed. These three women and a girl took to the courts and made the champions earn their titles.

The records — Boys: Mark Bassett, 5-0-58.9; Gary Dumont, 4-1-33.7; Greg Rutkowski, 3-2-36.7; Keith Howe, 2-3-20.0; Dean Bassett, 1-4-13.4; Chuck McNeill, 0-5-9.0.

Women: Debby Michaud, 6-0-64.5; Elaine Prue, 2-4-39.5; Edith Gadoury, 2-4-34.8; Barbara McNeill, 2-4-29.7.

Sixteen partnerships contended for our state doubles championships, on which a combined ringer percen-tage limit of 80 is set. In the playoff for first and second place, Joe Merritt and Richard O'Brien outduelled Bill Davis and Jim Taverna for title honors. Third place went to Ed Courville and Mike Desroches, who defeated two-time champions Fran Norman and Chris Borglund.

It was a great day for the Twin County League pitchers, as Mens, Boys, and Doubles titles were won by that club's members.

The highlight of other classes was Percy Howe's performance in Class J. In 1975 Percy averaged 19% for three tournaments, dropped to under 10% in 1976, and hung up the shoes for two years. He decided to give it one more try this year. He defeated Paul St. Pierre in a playoff, averaged 20.4%, and had a high game of 35.0%. All this with only one leg and a lot of years under his belt. It couldn't have happened to a finer gentleman.

Other class winners were Bill Davis in B, Bob Fitzwilliams in C, Ed Bodinaski in D, Dave Martin in E, Bob Dorn in F, Bill Progen in G, Tom Henley in H, and Bill English in I.

The tournament was held on two rainy weekends on the fourteen indoor courts of Heritage Recreation Center in Sutton. Cash prizes and placques were awarded in all classes, with $12 added to each class by the Massachusetts Horseshoe Pitchers Association.
