Welcome toWerribee
What I enjoy about Werribee is the feel of the town. We can be at Pacific Werribee with all the shops and feel like we’re in a large city, wander into Watton Street for the cafés
and shops and we’re in a country town. Driving to Werribee South, we’re in the country and then we’re at the beach! We have it all.

WERRIBEE PARK MANSION
back in time
BRIMMING WITH STORIESEver wondered how well-to-do pastoralists lived? Or their servants and offspring?
Step into their world at historic Werribee Park Mansion. Stories brim in every nook and cranny – tales of 10-year-old scullery maids, of grown men toting hunting trophies home from Africa.
Delve into all the drama with an audio tour. Dare the kids to hunt for history on a Junior Rangers challenge. Run rings around the parterre garden or board the Little Red Train for a jaunty ride through formal gardens.
Then stretch out with a picnic on the Great Lawn and decide if you’re up for ghostly night theatre fun.
Your go-to place for the region’s top experiences. Werribee Park Precinct is a hub of world-class attractions clustered in a single locale.
Where else can you experience a morning wandering through a grand mansion, an afternoon safari across the savannah and a night in a luxury hotel? And that’s just day one.
Come see it all.

GOLF GAME CHANGEREver teed off to the sound of lions roaring for their breakfast? The Werribee Park Golf Club offers a championship-length course, some of the best river views you’ll ever see and, yes, a unique soundtrack provided by the nearby zoo.
BEYOND THE MANSIONThere’s more, much more. Bluestone outbuildings, a line-up of time-worn carriages and the intriguing Ha Ha Wall. Times have changed. The Karen refugee community now tend the veggie gardens, an environmental group works from the original homestead and a community group restores the heritage orchard. Explore them all then meander back through the contemporary sculpture walk. Bet you can’t go by the giant picture frame without snapping a photo!
DAYS OF WINE AND ROSESFive thousand rose bushes in one planting? The Victoria State Rose Garden’s blooming riot of colour and fragrance will get up your nose in the nicest way.
If lawn-lazing with live music and a glass of award-winning wine is your thing, head to Shadowfax Winery, the closest winery to Melbourne’s CBD.
STAY IN STYLEIt’s all about you at the Mansion Hotel and Spa at Werribee Park, the ultimate in luxury accommodation. Settle in, relish fine dining at Joseph’s Restaurant and feed your soul in the full-featured day spa. For a special treat, sit down to a grand High Tea.

TAKE ME TO THE RIVER Wild wallabies leaping. Birds swooping. A random platypus sighting. Wicked views of the K Road Cliffs. Such are the legends of Werribee River Park, a new urban park fringing the Werribee Park Precinct.

THE SPORT OF KINGSPoke around charming historic horse stables, cheer on an Olympic qualifier or attend one of many regular eventing, dressage and polo events at Werribee Park National Equestrian Centre.
Many events are world-class and free to watch. Refer pages 31-32.
You’re not likely to see an Orange-bellied Parrot in the wild – there are fewer than 50 left – but you can eyeball one at Werribee Open Range Zoo.
You can meet Albus the Maremma dog and the endangered Eastern Barred Bandicoot he’s helping conserve. And you can dive into an African adventure, riding the safari bus across the open Savannah.
Big cats, chest-beating gorillas, towering giraffes, quirky meerkats and tiny frogs – you’ll find creatures great and small here. Plus an army of behind-the-scenes humans – keepers, vets and volunteers who love to share their critter stories.
Why not plan to stay the night amongst it all? Book a Slumber Safari, a unique African-inspired glamping experience like no other. Incredible memory-making for families, couples and groups.

THE SKY'S THE LIMITYou just need to pre-book your adventure. Is a joy flight high on your wish list? Zip up your flying jacket, don your goggles and feel the wind on your face as you loop and roll through the airspace. Vintage Tiger Moth Joy Flights supply all the gear and all the thrills.
Step it up a notch or two with serious learn-to-fly airtime at the Point Cook Flying Club. You don’t need a wing or a prayer to enjoy an evening trial flight in a powered parachute at Aerochute.
Held right on our border at Avalon Airport, the bi-annual Australian International Airshow is a must-do for plane spotters. Billed as the ultimate family adventure, the airshow fills the skies with jet fighters, bombers, helicopters and aerial aerobatics.
ADVENTURES IN AVIATION
Fancy clambering inside the bomb bay of a historic military plane? Or treading hallowed turf where a boxkite plane embarked on Australia’s maiden military flight? In Werribee and surrounds, aviation adventures abound.
Step back to the 1940s (and into that bomb bay) at the B-24 Liberator hangar. Get to know what drives 35+ volunteers to spend decades restoring the only B-24 Liberator this side of the equator. Behold her shiny patchwork fuselage, bend the ear of a flight fanatic, fossick through memorabilia and feel the raw power of engine run day.
Across the highway, the RAAF Museum at Point Cook is ground zero for the largest collection of historic military aircraft in the Southern Hemisphere and birthplace of the Australian Flying Corps and Royal Australian Airforce (RAAF). Wander through hangars of original and replica aircraft, multimedia displays and exhibitions. Get up close to the action of an Interactive Flying Display and delve into daring tales of pioneering aviators.

FINDING FEATHERED FRIENDS Finally glimpsing that Orange-bellied Parrot you’ve stalked for the longest time. Kids’ excitement as they spy a Glossy Ibis from a wetlands’ bird hide. Gazing at a Wedge-tailed Eagle soaring effortlessly above ancient River Red Gums. Whether you’re a pro twitcher or a newbie, you’ll be swept up in birdwatching moments in Werribee and surrounds, where the diversity is considered second only to Kakadu.
Flock to the Western Treatment Plant, a Ramsar listed wetland site with hundreds of recorded bird species, some rare and endangered. Pick up a day pass at the Plant or for interstate or international visitors at the Werribee Visitor Information Centre.
Head to any of our many natural environments – from the zoo to the foreshore to the river – to spot feathered friends, both rare and ubiquitous. Sling binoculars around your neck, charge up the camera and grab a birdwatching brochure from the Visitor Information Centre before you set out.
WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE
Don’t be fooled by its name: Western Treatment Plant is much more natural than it sounds! Its multiple habitats host an abundance of flora and fauna. Book an education tour to grasp the true wonder of this world-leading technical and environmental innovation. Curious? Explore Cocoroc, an abandoned town that once housed families of plant workers.
The Werribee River winds through the region’s heart. Shared trails and linear parks fringe its banks from the Werribee City Centre to the suburbs, from the tourist precinct to the wetlands.
Marvel at the naturally formed K Road Cliffs towering above the river. Stroll, cycle, fish, kayak or simply relax and be at one with the world.
Point Cook Marine Sanctuary teems with underwater possibility. Dive the Henrietta shipwreck or snorkel to spot a pipefish lurking in the seagrass.
Find more nature at: Point Cook Coastal Park and Cheetham Wetlands, Werribee South Foreshore and Heathdale Wetlands.
Tiptoe through nature-filled wetlands. Wander an uncrowded trail on the banks of a river or edge of the sea. Find your happy place where big city bustle gives way to open space and fresh air.

Getting there
By car: Werribee Park is located 30 mins from Melbourne CBD. The car park is located outside the Victoria State Rose Garden (300m from the Mansion).
By public transport: take the Werribee line train to Werribee Station, then take bus route 439 to Werribee Park.
By bicycle: follow the Werribee River Park trail to Werribee.
Enjoy a perfect day out at Werribee Park. Experience the grandeur of Werribee Mansion, discover Victoria’s unique pastoral history, or relax with family and friends on the Great Lawn surrounded by stunning formal gardens.
Located just 30 minutes from Melbourne by car, Werribee Park is so easy to get to and entry to the gardens is free.
Formal gardens
Entry to the idyllic gardens of Werribee Park is free. Escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and enjoy the colourful parterre, ornamental lake and grotto and the Victoria State Rose Garden. Children and adults alike will love roaming free across the lush lawns.
Tour the mansion
Step back in time as you enter the opulent mansion. Discover the story behind the success of the Chirnside family and learn what it was like to live in the Victorian era with an insightful and entertaining audio tour.
Sculpture Walk
Journey into the world of contemporary sculpture along this extraordinary outdoor exhibition. Situated behind the Mansion, the walk showcases a collection of works by Australia’s leading sculptors.
Farm and Community Garden

Riverine
Wander down to the tranquil riverine where Parks Victoria is working closely with the local community to ensure that the unique history of this area is protected for the benefit of generations to come.

Experience a rich natural and historical environment in this remarkably large, and seemingly remote park setting close to Melbourne.
Relax and picnic alongside a migratory bird habitat of international significance, a marine sanctuary and historical homestead.
Beach picnic area
The beach picnic area is the perfect place for a family picnic with gas BBQs, picnic tables, shade shelters, toilets, a children’s playground and beach access. The park is crossed by kilometres of mowed grass tracks and good walking is available along the beach at low tide.
Birdlife
Each year, thousands of migratory birds arrive from the northern hemisphere winter to enjoy the wetlands habitat of Port Phillip Bay. Visitors may see Greenshanks, Sharp-tailed Sandpipers, Red-necked Stints, Curlew Sandpipers, Marsh Sandpipers and Pacific Golden Plovers. Numbers reach a peak between September and March.
Cheetham Wetlands
Nearby Cheetham Wetlands are also a natural bird haven, formed from the salt marshes and lagoons of Skeleton Creek. Enjoy beautiful views of the city and the You Yangs. The adventurous will enjoy the magnificent 360 degree view from the Tower built as a dedication to “Migration and Aspirations”.
Getting there
Turn off the Princes Freeway at the Point Cook Road exit. Travel for 6km to the main entrance.
