3 DAYS OF CREATIVITY...A LIFETIME OF INSPIRATION!
2012...
Bet you missed us last year. Well, we missed you too. We’re back, and as you can see from this year’s line-up, we think it’s been worth the wait.
Once again, we’re bringing the very best Irish and international creative
professionals to the stage of the incredible Bord Gais Energy Theatre. We’ve spent the last year shaping the lineup and we think it’s the
strongest yet. We’re immensely proud to be able to present such a strong list of talent in our city, a city which has inspired us to develop OFFSET into
Dublin’s premier creative festival attracting speakers and visitors from all over the world.
We have the finest creatives speaking about their work, their ideas, their
inspirations, and giving insights into their practices and their personal perspectives on their own careers. They have created some of the most
iconic and recognizable images that the world has ever seen and this edition of OFFSET is set to be the biggest and best yet.
You can also find inspiration in the intimate surroundings of our Second
Room, allowing you to get a little closer to some of our legendary speakers, who will give interviews, contribute to debates, and take part
in group discussions, and expand on the topics that are at the heart of the creative agenda.
We hope you enjoy the weekend as much as we’ve enjoyed putting
OFFSET2012 together. Thanks for your support.
BREN, PETER & RICHARD
For our third installment of OFFSET, we’re returning to the Bord Gais Energy Theatre (formerly known
as Grand Canal Theatre). Nestled in the regenerated surroundings of Grand Canal Dock, its abstract form
was crafted by the Polish architect Daniel Libeskind. His allergic reaction to right angles has created an iconic
landmark in Dublin, and we’re very proud to make it our home again for three days this year.
We strive to make OFFSET as enjoyable and comfortable an event as possible and that’s why this amazing space
works so well for the weekend. There are few venues and areas in Dublin that could complement the spirit of
OFFSET as perfectly.
There are no VIP areas and no green rooms at OFFSET, the space is a democratic one where we encourage
speakers and attendee to mingle freely, become inspired and settle in for three days of incredible inspiration.

DISCIPLINE: GRAPHIC DESIGN GERMANY
WEBSITE: WWW.HORT.ORG.UK
HORT means after school club in German, and that pretty much sums up this creative agency’s approach to design and problem
solving. Although that sounds a little whimsical, the studio’s work tends to be direct with a distinct almost handmade
visual style where you can see how everything has been put together. Of course, they don’t call themselves a creative
agency – they’re a ‘multidisciplinary creative hub’ and ‘an institution devoted to making ideas come to life’ – but they
have to pay the bills like everyone else. Just as well that everyone from Livestong to LeBron James to The Knife are
queuing up to work with them. König is the founder and, we guess, the boss – but we’re not sure he’d call himself that.

One of the best known illustrators of his generation, Von – of the award winning HelloVon studio – blends traditional
and digital techniques to produce arresting and vibrant images that are both abstract and detailed. Although lauded for his
commercial work for Selfridges, Nike, Paralympics 2012, The New Yorker, Trussardi and Penguin, Von is increasingly
being recognised for his personal work and he’s exhibited at The London Design Museum, AgnesB, StolenSpace and Shepard
Fairey’s Subliminal Projects Gallery. An illustration legend in the making.

The eponymous Conor Nolan and David Wall started their studio in 2006 and have imprinted themselves indelibly
on the Irish graphic design scene. Constantly working, they’ve amassed an enviable client roster and have developed
a diverse range of projects, split roughly half and half between print and screen, many within the cultural and architectural
sectors. If you don’t know their names yet, you soon will.

fact, Sagmeister is still going to be remembered best for his work. Long term collaborations with musicians, Lou Reed and
David Byrne, clients that range from HBO to the Guggenheim Museum – from his NY studio Sagmeister has done everything
and has consistently produced work for clients that is visually striking and totally unique. With a body of work this good, you
won’t want to hear about the frogs.

Do you know anyone under five? Then they probably know Kevin, and he is probably their hero. His hugely successful first
book, Mr Peek and the Misunderstanding at the Zoo, has that timeless quality of the books you remember from your own
childhood. He deservedly won the prestigious Bologna Ragazzi Opera Prima Award in 2009 and was named a ‘rising star’ by
Booktrust. He also illustrated the charming Tiny Little Fly, by Michael Rosen for Walker Books. Even though he lives in New

Trucks, cars, dumpsters and street-level cityscapes, Hecox distills urban living down to images that approach the cinematic
in their tone and composition. He elevates the mundane to the epic, without ever seeming to alter the prosaic nature
of his subjects. The cities he features are familiar bustling metropolises – New York, Tokyo, London – but they’re also
places of isolation and stillness. He’s had notable collaborations with Incase and Chocolate Skateboards and has exhibited
worldwide, including Los Angeles, the UK and Japan.

Doesn’t every designer want a career like Bierut’s? Working his way up to Vice-President for Graphic Design at Vignelli
Associates, and now a Partner at Pentagram’s New York office, he’s assembled an eclectic portfolio that ranges from the
design of “I Want to Take You Higher,” an exhibition on the psychedelic era for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum to
the development of a new brand strategy and packaging for Saks Fifth Avenue. Playful, inventive and judicious in his work,
Bierut has created environmental graphics for the New York Times building and a new identity and signage for the expanded
Morgan Library and Museum. A giant of the design world.

Sometimes things start in one place and end up in another – like when you see Back to the Future as a kid and get
obsessed with skateboarding, and then start taking photos of you and your mates skateboarding, and suddenly before
you know it you’re one of Ireland’s top-rated photographers. Now working in the diverse fields of fine art photography,
fashion, advertising and music commissions, Gilligan’s images have been exhibited in London, Dublin, Berlin and L.A. and he
is set to release his first book later this year.

She’s exhibited intricate hand-drawn maps, produced CD covers and given TED Talks, and in the 1990s she became
the first female partner in an era-defining creative agency. Yes, Scher has come a long way from her first job as a layout
artist at Random House. Not only is she one of the most respected designers in the US, with many of her images now
part of the American vernacular, she has a reputation for being both an inspirational educator and a deep thinker about graphic
design. Scher has worked with Coca-Cola, The New York Philharmonic, The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum
and The Daily Show.

Idiosyncratic and exuberant are two good words to start with when talking about French designers and visual artists,
Antoine Audiau and Manuel Warosz. Since 1993, they’ve applied their surreal and dreamlike common vision to furniture,
graphic art and anything else that’s come their way. They re-designed Christian Lacroix’s couture house’s visual identity
in 2002, and have been designing the invitation cards to his shows ever since. They regularly exhibit in galleries, and in
2009 their first retrospective show was held at Le Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris.

KYLE COOPER @PROLOGUE FILMS
So apparently you’re not allowed to make a movie in Hollywood anymore unless Kyle Cooper is involved.
Although his name might not leap immediately to mind as quickly as some of the directors he’s worked with, Cooper
has been credited as almost single handedly revitalising the main title sequence as an art form. Some of the sequences
he’s produced have seared themselves into the public psyche – anyone remember Se7en? Thought so.
His current venture, Prologue Films, has recently produced the opening credits for both Sherlock Holmes movies,
Tron Legacy, The Walking Dead, Iron Man 2 and lots, lots more. He has five Emmy Award nominations and two wins
– how many do you have?
5PM-6PM SATURDAY

WEBSITE: WWW.OBEYGIANT.COM
OK, so some of the following might sound like hype but it’s not. We swear. An absurd sticker campaign, which began
in 1989 in Rhode Island, grew into a worldwide underground phenomenon, and then into an widely acclaimed body of
fine art – Fairey’s OBEY GIANT graphic has become an icon of DIY counter-culture, punk rock and skateboarding and
has changed the way that people see the relationship between art in galleries and street art. Mashing up zine-like imagery,
with 1980s wrestler André the Giant and John Carpenter’s They Live, Fairey’s images empower those who refuse to be
manipulated by the machine of manufactured consent.
And then he did it again with the Obama HOPE portrait, which might end up being one of the defining visual works
of the first half of this century. He’s been at the crest of a street art wave for nearly two decades and the Institute
of Contemporary Art (Boston) recently honored him with a full-scale solo retrospective, which drew a record number
of visitors for the museum.

At least as well known for her ‘check this out’ worthy side projects as for her actual ‘real’ work, Hische has been carving
out a niche for herself in internet lore with a series of websites that range from the quirky to the useful. There’s ‘Blurry
Pictures of my Friends’, ‘Mom, This is How Twitter Works’, and ‘Don’t Fear the Internet (with Russ Maschmeyer)’, which
is probably the prettiest guide to HTML and CSS every written. Primarily a letterer, she’s done heaps and heaps of work for
clients such as Tiffany & Co., The New York Times and Wired Magazine. We agree entirely with her URL.

Trained as a designer and animator, Johnny cut his teeth on several home grown projects in Ireland, including music videos
and his award winning graduation short, Procrastination. That short lead to him being chosen to take part in the Saatchi and
Saatchi New Directors showcase. He joined Nexus Productions in 2007 and since then has directed high-profile commercial
work, including spots for Bacardi, Adobe and YouTube.

Best known for his re-imaginings of film posters, Moss makes images that are true to the heart of the movie, but filtered
through a worldview that assumes intelligence and a wry understanding of pop culture from the audience. Clever and a
little retro, Moss’s work makes the art slaves in Hollywood marketing departments weep with envy at his brilliance. It’s
not only fan boys who’ve taken note. Sony, Lucasfilm, Apple, Penguin Books, Nike, Mondo Tees, Studio Ghibli – Moss counts
them among his client list.

You can mumble something along the lines of light installations and visuals and things, or maybe something about merging
existing structures and live performance, but that doesn’t really describe the astounding, soulful and awesome works
that UVA produces. A collaborative approach that takes in disciplines as diverse as software engineering, fine art,
communication design and architecture, has resulted in a unique and cohesive body of work often produced on an gigantic scale.
Noted for collaborations with Massive Attack, Jay Z, U2, Chemical Brothers and Battles, they’ve also produced pieces
for Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall, Madison Square Garden and Trafalgar Square.

Nimbly shimmying between galleries and side walks, Harrington produces astonishing, accomplished portrayals
of 19th century subject matter, smashed in the face with a tin of Dulux and lashed on a wall. His work is iconic,
powerful, dynamic and dramatic – and for once the adjectives aren’t hype. This Cork native has quietly become one
of the hottest street artists in the world. Conor is “interested in the dynamics between opposing elements”.
We’re interested in Conor.

Droga5 is the kind of advertising agency that all the other agencies want to be like. Re-defining the rules for how
brands can interact, attract and engage with their customers since 2006, Droga5 is still independent and is still producing
innovative work that spans new and traditional media. Following a bunch of award-winning campaigns and social
movements they’ve created for a clients such as Puma, Activision and Bing, The Guardian noted that this agency
is “one of the leaders of a new-wave of 21st century advertising”. Andrew Essex, is the CEO of Droga5 and

Pop-culture and fine art get all muddled up in the output of this studio that splits its work between Ireland and the UK.
Although now based in London, it feels like they’ve been branding Dublin for a decade. They developed the identity for
Cake Café, several years worth of posters and promo material for Alternative Miss Ireland and some arresting and striking
flyers and brochures for the avant-garde theatre company, ThisIsPopBaby. They were also responsible for the branding of
the much loved and greatly missed DEAF festival.
