The outlook for offshore wind in Europe has never been better. The last decade has seen a massive number of offshore wind farms come online after many amazing engineering feats and successful project management. For offshore wind energy developers to succeed in 2010-2020 they must secure the necessary finance for construction, utilise the right offshore technology at the right cost, select the correct foundation design and put in place the best access strategies for ongoing operations & maintenance.
The European target of reaching the 2020 targets of 40 GW of installed offshore wind energy are high but with 100 GW of proposed capacity already in the works the next challenge is to actually turn these proposed projects into profitable wind farms generating clean energy.
To reach 40 GW of offshore wind capacity in the EU by 2020 would require an average growth in annual installations of 28% - from 366 MW in 2008 to 6,900 MW in 2020. In the 12 year period from 1992-2004, the market for onshore wind capacity in the EU grew by an average 32% annually: from 215 MW to 5,749 MW. There is nothing to suggest that this historic scale of onshore wind development cannot be repeated – or increased - at sea.
