Test equipment must be designed to protect people who work in the high-voltage, high-current environment. Transients that ride ontop of power sources can trigger a sequence of events that may lead to serious injury.

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) developsinternational general standards for safety of electrical equipment for measurement, control and laboratory use. The most currentstandard issued by IEC is 61010.

IEC 61010 specifies overvoltage categories for an electrical distri-bution system based on the distance from the power source and the natural damping of transient energy as it travels through thesystem. As you move closer to the power source you enter a higherCategory rating area and a higher level of user protection from yourtest equipment is required.
