Message from the President

By Mark Fleischman, President of the Marina City Club Condominium Owners Association, Inc.

[email protected]

This is to bring you up to date on what has happened at the Marina City Club duringthis past month. Alexandria Pollock (Lexie) has taken over as Seabreeze manager ofthe MCC and has been busy familiarizing herself with the staff, property, and its

various issues. After consultation with the Board and a number of homeowners, she isconcentrating on Property Services regarding security issues and we will hear more fromher soon.

In regard to gate security, we have developed a system where we can speed upadmissions through the gate by emailing your request three plus hours before yourvisitors arrive to [email protected] with your name, unit #, and the name ofyour visitor. This way, the green car ID form will be filled out in advance and in the handsof the gate attendant, which we expect will speed up the line.

I’m happy to report that the aerobic floor in the gym has been completed and aproposal has been entered into for repairs to the men’s sauna as well as preventativemaintenance on the women’s sauna. The agreement, which was signed October 16th,provides for completion within 45 days.

Many of you may have noticed that you are getting emails in regard to emergencybuilding issues, i.e.: water shut offs for repairs etc., however, we only have 200 or soemail addresses. The Board and Management would appreciate it if you would sendyour email address to [email protected] so that you can be added to the list toreceive this important information.

Also we still need more volunteers for Floor Captains regarding emergencypreparedness so please consider this and send your contact information [email protected] if you are interested.

Management and the Board are exploring prices for earthquake insurance to coverthe building and will be back to you within the next few months. However, it is possibleto get individual earthquake insurance issued by Safeco Insurance and backed by CEAat reasonable rates, which would cover the contents and improvements in your unit aswell as assessments up to $75,000, which may be levied as a result of earthquakedamage. This can be written by any insurance broker.

with a newcomer to the Calcutta,Linda Fuller. On the other side ofthe net were MaureenHunt (last year's Calcuttachamp) teamed with CarlHoppe, another Calcuttavirgin. Linda and Elliotproved to be too muchand with a deft blend ofElliot's power and Linda'sconsistency, theytriumphed in two closesets.

In the main draw finals, thetwo lowest handicapped teamsbattled it out while the rest of us

ate burgers and chips. KarenBerliner and Carlos Dunkerly

(Calcutta champ in 2011)had a handicap of 5, whileMio Charles and JimRichards came in with ahandicap of 4. Mio andJim established a temporight from point one, withMio being aggressive from

the baseline and Jimswarming the net. Along

with a high first servepercentage, they played very

high level tennis and never let Carlosand Karen get rhythm or positionlong enough to make a dent in theirarmor. Although Carlos and Karentried every trick they knew, Mio andJim had a date with destiny, dominating the final 32-13, 32-21.Congrats to all who were able tosustain a high level of play in thischallenging and unfamiliar format. Thanks to all the people whodonated their time and money forthe auction and for this excitingbrand of tennis. I hope to see somemore of you participating next yearas there's no tournament like theCalcutta!

T he Calcutta was anamazingtournament this

year. Although we did notraise much cash for theBoys & Girls Club of Venice($402), we did have a greatweekend of camaraderieand exceptionalsportsmanship. Every playershowed genuine concernfor fairness. The athleteswere jovial with oneanother throughout, evenwhen the big money wason the line in the latterstages of the tournament.

Ten teams entered, butunfortunately, only fourteams could finish "in the money."In the finals of the Gold Divisionwe had Sheelagh Boyd teamedwith Mike Skolnik against thefearsome duo of Barbara Rubinand Jack Hubka. This match wasa barn burner, with the outcomein doubt to the very last point. Inthe end, Skolnik and Boyd tookthe Gold trophy 32-28, 31-32, 32-31 in the third set after a see-sawbattle in the first two sets.

In the battle for third place inthe main draw, we had ElliotNache (last year's finalist) teaming

H ow tightly should a tennisplayer grip the racket? This is one of my all-time

favorite questions because it is socrucial to a player's development. The shortanswer: "Not very." I would say on average, formost tennis strokes, the grip tightness can be ratedon a scale of 1-10, with 10 being a death-gripyou'd use to choke out Charles Manson if he werein your house and a 1 being barely keeping theracket in your hand.

If you are a beginner, I would recommend youhold the racket about 10-20% tighter than

recommended here. Once you've established yourstrokes and are hitting the sweet-spot consistently, loosen up.

For groundstrokes, hold a 3 or 4 out of 10; forvolleys a 3-5, depending on the speed of theincoming ball, but still, loose is preferable. For theserve and overhead, a 2-3 is best. You really onlywant to grip the racket tight enough so that it doesn'tfly out of your hand or become unstable at impact. Ifyou are out of position or off-balance, you may haveto firm up your grip because your lack of stability inyour core muscles will have to be compensated forby your extremities (arm, hand, and wrist). If you arein good position and have good balance, then keepyour grip as loose as possible.

I realize this sounds counter-intuitive, however, ifyou want a smoother, more powerful swing, a loosegrip is paramount to generate racket-head speed(rhs), the backbone of advanced and improvingtennis players' strokes.

Think about a whip versus a two-by-four board.Which goes faster at its fastest point? Although I'd liketo say the whip's tip breaks the speed of sound, thattheory is still in dispute, however, I can safely say thatthe tip of a whip goes faster than the tip of a boardat its fastest point. Therefore, the more whip-like thetip of your tennis racket is, the faster your rhs, and themore power you will impart on the tennis ball.

In addition to power, a relaxed grip also relaxesthe body and mind, putting you more in control ofyour movements and decisions when playing amatch. Anxiety is your enemy on the tennis court.Developing a looser grip will create less tension and amore relaxed attitude that translates into betterstrokes, and eventually into wins.
