August Dinner Meeting: What Do You Mean I Started It? You’ve been there. You know you have. You’re plugging along, doing your job, making progress, and then all of a sudden… BAM! You feel like the victim of a hit-and-run (and to some extent, you are). You’ve just been nailed by office politics. Many will tuck their tails between their legs, chalk it up to a bad experience, and try to salvage what they can. Those who bother to investigate may hear the accusation that they themselves started the whole mess. This is where the real confusion begins. You ask yourself how one could be both the victim AND perpetrator of office politics. During this presentation, Timothy Johnson will share the process of using GUST to understand your office politics situations better. You’ll see how much control you have over the GAME, learn the importance of UNDERSTANDING the players and motives, determine the best STRATEGY for addressing your specific situation, and then figure out how to TAKE ACTION without compromising your integrity. We all face office politics situations, from bullies who overstep their bounds to office prima donas who think everything revolves around their egos, from passive-aggressive types to saboteurs, you’ll see new approaches for framing and handling your office politics situations. September Breakfast Meeting: PMP vs. Scrum Master: Compatible or Incompatible?With the advent of agile methodologies, a new role has emerged – that of Scrum Master. In many ways, a Scrum Master fills the same relative role on a project as a Project Manager. But is a Scrum Master really a project manager? How does the role of a Scrum Master differ from that of a Project Manager? Can a Scrum Master be a PMP at the same time without going crazy? Come attend this breakfast meeting to find out!

Speaker Karen Little, PMP, MBA, CSM, CBAP, MCP, ITIL, of Magenic Technologies, has more than 33 years of information technology experience, with over 27 as a manager. She is the chairperson for the 2007 Professional Development Days conference, and the PMI MN finance director, as well as being the assistant web master for the PMI MN chapter.

Ms. Little has multiple years of hands on project management experience on both agile and traditional projects, and has also been a stand-up trainer. She is both a PMP and a Certified Scrum Master, as well as being certified in ITIL Foundation. She has recently contributed to the development of the Business Analyst Book of Knowledge, put out by the International Institute of Business Analysts, and is a Certified Business Analyst Professional, one of about 100 in the world.

Career Networking News: September Event: Résumé Workshop

An important instrument in your job-search toolkit is your résumé. We all know that it is not the only tool you need, but at the same time, a good résumé can be your entry into a new opportunity. There are countless books and articles on how to write a résumé. But how does yours measure up against the attention-grabbing yardstick? Does it concisely portray what you want to say to your potential employer to get you that all-important interview?

In September, the Career Networking Group is pleased to bring you our annual Résumé Workshop. This has been a popular session for the past three years. We’re delighted that Genesis10, a top-rated local project management consulting company and PMI-MN Corporate Partner, will once again sponsor the event.

Due to the special nature of this session, we have two requirements for participants.

1. Register by Noon on September 13. In order to have enough recruiters on hand for the group, we need to know how many people will be attending. Register by sending an e-mail to [email protected] or calling 651-917-6246. Provide your name, e-mail address and PMI Member number (if applicable).

2. Bring 10 copies of your résumé to the session. This is an interactive session. Participants at your table will want to follow along as the recruiter reviews each document.

October Breakfast Meeting: Challenges of New Technology Development in the Manufacturing EnvironmentThis presentation will highlight challenges of new technology development within the global manufacturing environment of a large company such as 3M. Specific technology examples related to the development of custom sensing and inspection equipment will be used to illustrate challenges such as:

Development of technical solutions within a multi-disciplinary team “Selling” the solution within the management hierarchy Integration and worldwide deployment strategies

Particular emphasis will be placed on potential pitfalls and strategies to overcome these pitfalls.

Professional Development Days: October 29 – November 1, 2007: Master Craftsman: Building Project SuccessThe 2007 Professional Development Days (PDD) Planning Committee has completed the selection of educators and speakers for this year’s event. Seven Tips for Successful Project Manager Professional Development by Timothy J Everett, MBA, PMP

Let’s face facts, there is a huge disconnect when it comes to professional development.

The National Human Resources Association reports that American businesses spend in excess of $2 billion a year on employee professional development.

A Society of Human Resource Management survey published in April 2005 found that practically all organizations say that they deem employee development to be of strategic importance. They recognize that professional development helps retain talent and equips the organization for growth. However, the survey also found that formalized avenues for development are not the norm with 83% of development programs being informal, unstructured or not measured. As a consequence, professional development results are random and often disappointing.

It’s the “tyranny of the urgent." Without the proper intensity, process, structure and methods, day-to-day activities get in the way of developing an organization's most valuable assets: its people. The greatest waste of potential occurs when resources are spent inefficiently and professional development results are not realized.

Nevertheless, the demands on project managers continue to increase. The bar keeps going up and traditional methods fail to create the desired results.

And the answer is…

Project Managers sit at the controls that manage countless people and billions of dollars. Organizations looking to optimize team execution should focus their resources on the development of these professionals. Here are

seven tips for overcoming the professional development disconnect and increasing project team effectiveness.

• First, establish accountability workgroups. These groups of seven to twelve practitioners are the key to turning your professional development process around. Groups led by professional facilitators create higher levels of professional development intensity and results.

• Second, meet with your manager and secure their permission to apply time and resources to develop stronger skills in leadership, communication, facilitation and problem solving.

• Third, take the time to understand your organization’s goals and metrics. Then link them to your professional development plan. Think in terms of return on investment for your development activities.

• Fourth, most organizations are not effective in communicating the full extent of the resources available for professional development. Put in the necessary effort and seek to understand all the resources at your disposal.

• Fifth, document your development plan and keep it current. Use the document as a tool to communicate your successes.

• Sixth, leverage the knowledge and energy of experts. Outside resources can be helpful in providing the proper intensity, process, structure and methods required to meet your goals.

• Finally, many organizations under fund their professional development activities. Utilize program or project budgets to help pay for team development.
