JOURNAL DINNER APRIL 3, 2011
MESSAGE FROM RABBI EBBIN
Dear Friends, It is a great honor for me to be a part of my first Ohav Sholom Journal Dinner as we honor Dr Mel Isaacs. In the short time since I have joined Ohav, I have witnessed firsthand the diversity, openness and warmth that makes Ohav so uniquely special. At our dinner we take an evening to celebrate how extraordinary our congregation truly is, the impact it has made on the lives of our families, as well as honor remarkable individuals who have shaped Ohav’s character over the years. Our Rabbis tell us (Midrash Rabba, Bereshit 10:6) that every blade of grass has its angel that bends over it and whispers, 'Grow, grow.'" In the development of a child, there are so many factors and variables that go into a seed that is a child, in hopes that they will bloom and bear beautiful fruit in the future. Of course it is the parents who make the pivotal contributions towards a child’s progression. Yet it is the whispers, the behind the scenes work, performed by the angelic individuals who are teachers, educators and role models with hearts of gold, that are actually the driving force of what makes children grow. At Ohav, our synagogue is filled with special angels who have been whispering in the ears of our children for nearly a half a century. Few people have been louder in their whispering, persistent in their encouraging and determined in their dedication to each child, than Dr Mel Isaacs. Mel has worked tirelessly both in front and behind the scenes, to make our Hebrew School the most respected in the region and in enabling our Ohav kids to grow to great heights both as Jews and as menches. It is fairly safe to say, that through the very loud whispers of Dr Isaacs, the entire institution of Ohav Sholom stands proudly today. Our Hebrew School has been integral to the vitality of our synagogue since its inception and that remains true to this day. Today, we proudly thank them for everything they have given to our religious school and to our synagogue that they and we hold so dearly. To Mel and to other special honorees who join us today, I wish for you the same as G-d wishes for His people; that your days should be many on this earth, so that you can continue to contribute the time and talents bestowed to you in order to make children grow, as well as to spread His light in the world. Sincerely, Rabbi Ira Ebbin

JOURNAL DINNER APRIL 3, 2011
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
e are proud to honor Dr. Mel Isaacs as this year’s journal honoree. Over the last 40 years, Congregation Ohav Sholom has been so fortunate to have Dr. Isaacs as a Hebrew school teacher and Principal. Throughout his tenure as Principal, Dr. Isaacs
has developed a curriculum that brings the best out of our Hebrew school students. What I admire most about Dr. Isaacs is his enthusiasm and dedication to our Hebrew school. For example over the years, we have seen Dr. Isaac’s involvement and development of such programs as Aleph Inductions, graduations, Model Seders, Charoses Bowl, field trips, Israeli day parades, PACE (Parent and Children Education) program, Sukkah decorating, Rosh Chodesh breakfasts, music, Megillah readings, the Community Hebrew High School, International Bible Contest, and more. Dr. Isaacs is a graduate of Brooklyn College and received is Ed. D in Jewish School Administration from Yeshiva University. Dr. Isaacs first came to Ohav Sholom as a Hebrew school teacher in 1969. Five years later, he became the Principal of the Hebrew School for the next 20 years. In 1994, Dr. Isaacs became the Director of Education for the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County (HANC). After his retirement from HANC, Dr. Isaacs returned to his position as Principal of our Hebrew School in 2008. The attraction to bring Dr. Isaacs back was his experience and innovation. No one knows the Ohav Sholom Hebrew School better than Dr. Isaacs. And he was welcomed back with open arms. Over the years, Dr. Isaacs has made such an impact in the lives of many individuals for his devotion to education. At this years’ journal dinner, we will be recognizing seven of those individuals for outstanding contributions to the Jewish community. We will present each one with an award bearing Dr. Isaacs’ name. It is with sincere appreciation that we pay tribute and say thank-you to Dr. Isaacs on behalf of the synagogue and the thousands of students that have gone through our Hebrew School program. Dr. Mel Isaacs Speaks About 50 Years in Jewish Education
If there was a hall of fame for Jewish educators, Dr. Mel Isaacs would be enshrined among the immortals. The beloved principal of our Religious School holds the distinction of having educated Jewish children throughout the NY area for more than 50 consecutive years. Now that’s a streak even baseball iron man Cal Ripken Jr. would be envious of! Dr. Isaacs’ professional career began as a teacher at RJJ, the Rabbi Jacob Joseph High School on the Lower East Side -- the same school he attended for both elementary and High School. Economic conditions forced him to enter the public sector. However, he remained connected to Jewish education through his participation at various day camps and at the Glenwood Jewish Center. When he moved to West Hempstead in 1967, Dr. Isaacs dreaded the long drive to work in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. He transferred from teaching at PS 169 to the Merrick School District. He also sought a second position at a Jewish supplementary school. Two year later, Dr. Isaacs began his storied affiliation with Ohav Sholom. We recently caught up with our legendary educator to reflect on a half century in Jewish education and his fondest memories at Ohav. Q) For over 50 years, you have been a leading Jewish educator. What do you consider to be
the most crucial aspects of giving a child a Jewish education? A) The most crucial aspect is to have our children truly love and identify with our beautiful heritage. Many believe that
cognitive learning is more important than learning which encompasses an affective component. If a child can gain the knowledge, then he or she should become an active member in the Jewish community. I firmly believe that the affective domain plays a more dominant role in the equation. If the child does things that touch him emotionally and spiritually, then his own curiosity and love of his religious beliefs will motivate him to learn more. On the other hand, if a child does not enjoy coming to Religious School, he will be drawn to secular interests that might distance him from a vital connection to his people.
The second important ingredient is the faculty. A school must have teachers who can connect with his/her own inner child and truly understand what it is like to be the student; to arouse curiosity and interest in the learner that will encourage class interaction and participation. Children are like flowers: If nurtured and loved, they will blossom.
Q) What do you see as the greatest challenge of Jewish education today? A) The major challenge is to have the parents partner in the educational process of their children's Jewish
education. Unfortunately, Religious School is not given a high priority in most homes today. It is looked upon as a "rite of passage" to becoming a Bar and Bat Mitzvah, and not as the foundation of Jewish connectedness. Nor is it viewed as the beginning of a life-long process of Jewish identity and participation in Judaism, regardless of one's degree of religious affiliation. Parents often fail to realize that they are the primary teachers for their children. They must model the lifestyle and religious beliefs for their off-spring. A parent cannot expect the school to fill the void left empty by parents not caring, or who are uninterested.
Q) You helped to run Ohav's Religious School for some twenty years, then moved on to work at HANC. What
brought you back to Ohav?
A) I began working at Congregation Ohav Sholom in September of 1969 in the capacity of a teacher for five years, and the principal for the next 20. In 1994 I returned to the Yeshiva world to work at HANC as an administrator. After 13 years, I decided it was time to slow down and made the decision to retire. I happened to meet Adam Marchuck at a simcha around that juncture. He asked me what I was doing with my time besides traveling to visit grandchildren in Israel and London. I informed him that I was interested in keeping a hand in Jewish education, and he asked me if I’d
CONGREGATION OHAV SHOLOM 7
JOURNAL DINNER APRIL 3, 2011
be interested in returning. The rest is history. I am so appreciative to return to the school, the synagogue and congregational family that I truly love.
Q) You've had the opportunity to educate the children of young men and women who were once students at
Ohav long ago. What is that experience like? A) Considering that I am still a young man, it is hard to believe that I have students in our Religious School
whose grandfathers were my students at RJJ. Please remember, I was just 4 years older then my students when I began my educational career. I also marvel that so many of our former students are now parents of students that we have here at Ohav, and similarly when I was with HANC. That feeling cannot be put into words. The fact that the goals we set for ourselves, which are still part of our school's mission statement, proves to us that we have succeeded as an institution.
As an educator, I appreciate that our school has made a difference in the lives of so many of our graduates. We see a continuity of our beautiful religious civilization into the next generation. We have former students who are rabbinic leaders both here and in Israel. Still others chose to become Jewish educators. Some of our alumni reside in Israel and are contributing to that country's growth. Finally, so many are actively involved with synagogues as lay leaders and congregants, both here in Merrick, and wherever else they may reside. They are bringing up their children as Jews and are making sure that they are getting a similar or better education than they were the recipients of. That is the joy and nachas I continuously get. I am so fortunate to have made this choice professionally. The reward is immense.
Q) What are the greatest differences between the Ohav school today VS the way it was in your first tenure? A) The difference, as I see it, is the change in societal norms and values and the pressures of every day life both in and
out of the home. Today's economic times demand that both parents work, thus less time is given, both quantitatively and qualitatively, to the children. Our students today are bombarded with a multitude of choices; so many activities that their heads must spin from trying to keep up with all of the demands and pressures. The Merrick-Bellmore communities are also in transition. Our school was much larger years ago. We had 2 sections on each grade level with a student population well over 300, and a high school of 90. NCSY was housed in our building and we were the beneficiaries of their events and programs. That impacted immensely on the extra-curricular activities we offered for our students.
Q) What have been your most successful programs that you've instituted at the Ohav school? A) I am most pleased about the positive attitude toward a Jewish education that our students took with them upon
graduating. The fact that so many of our students chose to continue in our High School, then in the Community Hebrew High School after it was founded 22 years ago. And still so many others opted to continue their studies in the Day School movement. This attests to the success of the many programs we instituted over the course of these many years. Programs are only as good as our teachers who carry out the philosophy of the school, so the credit must go to them; the unsung heroes and heroines who chose teaching as a career.
Q) You've mentioned to me that Jewish day school should be "fun" for students in addition to it being
educational? How do you implement fun into a Hebrew curriculum? A) Students should have fun in school regardless of what is being taught. I always felt that teachers, as facilitators of
learning, must be imaginative in how they present material and use the same guidelines when having their students research and present material. The teacher need not be the only person presenting factual information. Students can work together in small groups, and then share with their classmates. Experimentation and out of classroom experiences enhance the process. That "makes it fun."
CONGREGATION OHAV SHOLOM 8
JOURNAL DINNER APRIL 3, 2011
Q) How important is the study of Israel in the religious curriculum (both historical and modern
day Israel)?
A) Both Rabbi Wohlberg and I felt strongly about this and, therefore, made this area a cornerstone of the curriculum. The State of Israel is the homeland of and for the Jewish people. It is extremely important to know where you came from in order to know where you are going. Blending both the history of the past and life in Israel today makes sense. Our participation in the Salute to Israel parade over the years, our
involvement with the Jewish National Fund, our participation in an NCSY trip that included our students as campers for a summer in Israel, as well as our contributions to
so many charities there, give our students a level of comfort toward and with our brothers and sisters who make their home there. We are proud of the fact that several of our alumni live there and are still in contact with us. So many have gone to Israel to visit as adults. Again, if we are successful in effecting an emotional connection to the curriculum, it lasts forever.
Q) It's been said that having a community Hebrew school for the Merrick-Bellmore communities was a dream of
yours from the outset. Has this dream been fully realized?
A) Absolutely! Ohav had the largest high school at the time some 22 years ago. So many of both our own students and those of the three other local synagogue schools were dropping out after their final year. The feeling was that these students, who were spending their days together in public school, could be the recipients of a Jewish education and have a place to socialize in the same building That was the impetus to this idea. We worked together as a community to make this a reality. Besides hiring professional staff, all four rabbis and principals were instructors. The students were afforded the opportunity of a diverse Jewish curriculum.
That first year we thought that if we had 120 students, we would be successful. We enrolled over 150 and have not dipped below that number since. We graduate our students at age 16. We then offer a post graduation course to those who are juniors and seniors and who wish to continue in a more intense course of study. They are able to gain college credits for those two years. We still have as many as 30 students each year who take advantage of this opportunity. Besides getting an education and learning about the different paths within Judaism, it affords our teenagers a place to socialize within the walls of a Jewish institution.
Q) Ohav Sholom promotes itself as a warm, welcoming Orthodox congregation with acceptance of people from a
wide array of backgrounds. Does the Ohav Religious School mirror this open-arms philosophy?
A) Why would it be any different? We are the only school I am aware of that accepts non-member children to attend. Besides, we concentrate on the affective, the emotional component of our religious beliefs that make it inherent to be open, warm, compassionate and understanding.
Q) What does it mean to you to be honored by Ohav at the annual dinner this year? A) I am deeply honored to be the recipient of this award since it sheds light on the wonderful accomplishments of our
school. We have always been at the forefront of the cutting edge as a school, and we’ve been recognized for our contributions to the field by the Board of Jewish Education, the Educator's Council of America, The Jewish Agency and Yeshiva University. We have been noted as a model school that has been replicated across this country. This honor gives recognition to all of us as an educational institution, which includes; the administration, the faculty, the alumni and the lay leadership. I am privileged to be part of this communal honor.

Q) What are some of your most treasured memories at Ohav? A) There are so many highlights over these many years that come to mind. My recalling
them all would fill volumes. However the short list includes, in no particular order:
Helping to create the New Opportunities Program (NOP) at the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County to accommodate graduates of our Religious School that wanted to continue their studies in a day school setting.
Ohav’s participation in the Salute to Israel Day parade for almost two decades, then winning an award this past June after a hiatus of 15 years.
Our school's involvement in the March for Soviet Jewry, and all of the students wearing bracelets for Russian Refuseniks.
The success of our Community Hebrew High School.
The many Shabbatonim, both in Merrick and in places like Silver-Spring, MD, Brookline, Mass. and Boro Park that we participated in.
That we assisted both JEP and NCSY in beginning their successful programming by allowing them to use our school as their first partners in extra-curricular activities. The two programs enhanced our children's learning through informal education.
Our school’s involvement in the International Bible Contest, and having several of our students reach the final round here in America. Pauline Fein, presently in Vov, placed third last year. The most significant was having one of our students, Dawn Friedman, win and represent all of the Day and Supplementary Schools from the United States in Israel. She placed 16th worldwide. That was a major accomplishment.
The award winning school choir that was led for so many years by Bernice Lite
We were the first Hebrew School to implement a class for educationally challenged students, and another for the physically handicapped.
Ohav Sholom had its own computer room before it was fashionable, or even on the cusp of becoming the way to assist students in their educational process.
The many events surrounding the life cycle and holidays.
The memorable graduation ceremonies and Aleph Inductions.
The Charoses Bowl that has continued without interruption over the past 37 years.
The Parent and Child Education Programs.
Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach visiting our school and entertaining our students.
Our receiving the first “School of the Year Award” by the Board of Jewish Education of Greater New York.
Dr. Isaacs, we cannot thank you enough for what you have dedicated yourself to… the impact you have on each of your students, their families, and the Jewish community is immeasurable. Our thanks to you will always pailed by the gifts you have given to us. We are forever grateful.

A MESSAGE FROM DR. MEL ISAACS
y association with Congregation Ohav Sholom began in the 1969-1970 academic year, when the New York Mets, Jets and Knicks were all crowned champions of their respective sports. Little did I know then that over the next 42 years this synagogue and school would have such a profound impact on both my professional and
personal life and would culminate in an evening such as this. As a classroom teacher in our school for the first five years, the seeds were planted, with the help of both my fellow colleagues and students, in developing a philosophy of education and a curriculum that would eventually be recognized as a model for other schools to emulate. This would culminate in our receiving the first School of the Year Award by the Board of Jewish Education of Greater New York in 1980. When appointed principal in 1974, I was given the responsibility and the challenge of developing a meaningful curriculum and a place where students would enjoy coming to learn about our beautiful Religious Civilization. It was important that they could participate in programs that would be enjoyable after spending a full day in the public schools. That was quite a challenge, but over those twenty years we continually grew in both size and stature. Permit me to be nostalgic in recalling some very special educators who made a difference in the lives of our students in those early years and who helped us into becoming an outstanding school. They included: Rabbi Bernard Helfgott (Z"L), Mrs. Esther Haimson, Mrs. Dina Schoenblum, Mrs. Selma Schulman (Z"L), Mr. Richard Auslander, Mr. Joe Werfel, Rabbi David Friedman, Mrs. Ronnie Lichter, Mr. Morton Scwartzstein, and Mrs. Carrie Wachtel, just to name a few. It also took the support of the lay leadership and the encouragement of the elected officials of the synagogue to reach this milestone evening where our school is being recognized for the impact it has made on the lives of its students. Dynamic leadership with people who made a difference in those early years included; Mr. Norton Roberts, Mr. Hershell Levine, Mr. Bill Egert, and Mr. David Schlachter, all who served the school in their role as Chairmen of the Board of Education. Two women of valor who were the backbone of the PTA, Mrs. Betty Gordon and Mrs. Lisa Spar (Z"L) did whatever was necessary to insure our school's success. Upon my return to the school three years ago after a hiatus of 14 years, the thrill of being allowed to continue what we began so many years earlier was quite inspirational. Yes, much has changed over time, but the core philosophy and values were still in place and to be able to pick up the mantle from Mr. Jack Rubel, who so successfully kept the mission alive and well over his tenure, is truly a blessing for me. To be able to reunite with Rabbi Wohlberg as in days of old was an added treat and to now move forward with Rabbi Ebbin is quite exciting. I am privileged to share this evening with seven individuals who reflect the mission statement of our school, and who, individually and collectively, reflect the many components that allow our Religious School to continue to have such a wonderful reputation. Mrs. Bernice Lite, a faculty member for 24 years, Mr. Les Grussgott, in his role of lay leadership, and our five alumni who have made a difference in the Jewish community, Mr. Michael Alexander, Dr. Deborah Cohn, Rabbi Moshe Gordon, Dr. Marlene Galinkin Luskin, and Professor Adam Schonbrun, are all representative models of what this school has strived to accomplish. I would like to thank Congregation Ohav Sholom for bestowing this special honor upon me this evening. I will always cherish this wonderful and special moment.

Dear Mel,
It is a pleasure and an honor to write this journal ad as Ohav Sholom pays tribute to you.
You were such a source of strength for me as we worked together while I was PTA President of HANC Plainview. Even when I was just part of the parent body, you always took the
extra time out of your busy schedule to help me, talk to me, and mentor me through all of my parenting issues.
I have tremendous respect for your integrity, diligence and compassion.
Thank you for everything you have done for my family… and indeed this is a well-deserved honor.
