I hope that everyone is having a very Happy Chanukkah!
Personally, I am very glad we follow the opinion of Hillel, rather than the opinion of Shammai. According to
the Talmud (Shabbat 21b), Shammai recommends that we begin Channukah with all eight candles lit, and then
each day light one less candle, so that by the last day just one candle remains.
One of my teachers said that one Chanukkah she followed Shammai’s recommendation in one of the rooms of
her home. While it began with such light and energy, by the end of the holiday, the room seemed dark and
gloomy.
Luckily, Judaism follows the teaching of Hillel. We begin with just one candle, each day lighting one more,
until by the last night all the candles are lit and the world is filled with warmth and light.
Judaism recommends more candles, more spirit, and more people joining together.
Proverbs 20:27 says, “Ner Adonai Nishmat Adam – The candle of Adonai is a person’s soul.” We are God’s
candles; so to bring God’s light into the world, we need to let our light shine.
And Proverbs 14:28 says, “BeRov Am Hadrat Melech – The glory of the King is in the multitude of people.”
As Jews, we best serve God by coming together as a community. By joining together we have the opportunity
to bring even more of God’s light into the world.
So, it is with great pleasure that I tell you about a wonderful opportunity for our community. On Friday the
13th of December, we will forget about silly and sad superstitions, and instead, we will join together as a
community at OZS to have a Giant Pot Luck Shabbat Dinner.
Shabbat begins at 5:19pm, so please bring your food in before that. The dinner will formally begin at 5:30pm,
and we will have a short, yet very joyous Shabbat evening service afterwards.
I am so excited for this opportunity because I do believe that the glory of God can be found when God’s
children join together to strengthen their relationships and to form sacred community. I am hopeful that this
will be one of many Shabbat dinners that can bring together all the diverse individuals and groups within our
Ohavay Zion community.
May the holy lights of our OZS community join together to bring joy and light into our world.
Rabbi Moshe Smolkin
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Kislev - Tevet 5774 / December 2013
The week that we celebrate miracles has come. Could it be a miracle that our heating and air conditioning systems
have lasted as long as they have? As winter abruptly arrived last week, the blast of cold air was more than, what I
believe was the last original (27 years old) HVAC unit in our building, could handle. This leaves the sanctuary quite
brisk -- for the next 5 weeks -- as we await the manufacturing of a new unit. As with all of our (not resolved with a
miracle) physical building events, we will continue our activities, but probably in other rooms of the building. When
you enter, please look for signage indicating where events will be held for the next month. Should a miracle of nice
70 degree weather return, we will then use the sanctuary, but as long as it is cold we will move to warmer rooms. We
are thankful that we are able to pay for the replacement of yet another HVAC unit (the 2nd this Fall) without creating
additional funding initiatives. We are also thankful for zones of climate control as we have six units that ensure the
warmth in our building.
The initial candle we light on Hanukkah, the shamash, has a distinct location whether it be attached or not attached to
the menorah. Its purpose is of practical use, to aid us in the task of lighting the Hanukkah lights. Our kehillah, OZS,
relies not just on one shamash but many to be the welcoming, community-oriented congregation we strive to be.
Have you taken a turn at being a shamash at OZS lately? In January, we will begin sharing our members’
experiences and expertise. Whether it is travels, research, or personal experiences, we encourage you to share them
with us in planned casual settings. Please contact either me or the office for more details and to discuss how we can
learn and grow together.
There are many opportunities this month to join with members of the larger Jewish community as well as here at
OZS. I hope to see you whether it be joining in our 12/3 Hanukkah celebration of Latke’s and No Limit Texas
Dreidel or with a mitzvah through JFB’s Tzeason of Tzedekah. Food abounds with our 12/13 Shabbat Pot luck,
12/15 JFB’s winter dinner or the annual December 24th dinner upholding our tradition of Chinese food around
Christmas time.
As you light the shamash, may the glow of that light reflect warmly on you, your family and our community.
Happy Hanukkah!

Jewish community at God's Pantry Please join representatives from the entire Jewish community at God's Pantry - (1685 Jaggie Fox Way, phone:
255-6592) on the third Tuesday of each month, from 6:30 to 8:00PM. We will sort food to be distributed to

Mazon Fundraiser??? Let's Raise Money for Mazon. Join us Sunday, December 8 at 10:00AM, for a planning meeting...thinking
along the lines of a Hunger walk/run for sometime in March. I like the idea because it is a Jewish hunger
organization yet they give funds to our food bank to help out in Eastern KY. The arboretum might be a good
place....other thoughts and ideas are welcome too. We can have people register online with a site called razoo.
Come to the meeting and let's see what we can come up with to support this worthwhile cause.
KABBALAT SHABBAT LEARNERS MINYAN
Please join us on Friday, December 6 at 5:30pm for our first Kabbalat Shabbat Learners Minyan. This minyan
will be a warm and welcoming way to enter into the traditional Kabbalat Shabbat service. With uplifting
melodies, prayer books with translation, and teachings guiding our way, we will enjoy our Shabbos
exploration together. Everyone is welcome!
The OZS Choir /Makelah, under the direction of Maestra Jaemi Loeb will rehearse some (not all) Sundays from 1 to 3,
in the OZS social hall. Please e- mail Marilyn Robie [email protected] with any questions.

Kiddush lunch is wonderful part of Shabbat services, a tradition of OZS. There are some misconceptions,
though, which might be deterring some people from sponsoring a Kiddush lunch. Let's skewer those.
Myth 1: It is too expensive to sponsor a lunch. Busted: you will be reimbursed up to $70, or, $70 can be
loaded on a Kroger gift card to get you set for shopping.
Myth 2: It takes too much time to cook Kiddush lunch. Busted: these days, when so many people work
during the day, it might seem there is no time. But we can schedule a Sunday to cook and freeze food, or if
you prefer something more fresh a Wednesday or Thursday evening will work, as well as Friday morning or
afternoon. Fresh items like salads and fruit can be prepared Saturday morning.
Myth 3: I have no one to help me cook. Busted: the kitchen committee will be there to help you no matter
which time or day you schedule to cook.
Myth 4: I cannot do a Kiddush lunch because I do not know the rules of kashrut. Busted: we can sit down
and work up a menu of your favorite dishes and adapt them to be pareve or dairy. We will help you to find
kosher ingredients and even shop with you. Fear not!
Myth 5: OZS does not really need to do a Kiddush lunch. Busted: while this community is perceived as
wealthy and independent, there are some for whom preparing a good lunch on Shabbat is a hardship for
financial or physical reasons. Also, for some this may provide a time to socialize that would not otherwise be
available.
And finally, our position in the Conservative movement is that following halacha in a modern framework is
our practice. By providing a Kiddush lunch, we enable people to be Torah observant who might otherwise
have had to go out and eat on Shabbat due to nursing home scheduling, inability to cook, or other availability
issues. It is a big mitzvah for our community to provide this opportunity for food, fellowship, and Torah.
So get together with me or with your friends and sponsor a Kiddush lunch of your favorite foods! Honor a
loved one, a birthday or anniversary, your bar/bat mitzvah, or even nothing at all. Every Shabbat is a special
day. With your help, it can be special for everyone.
Peace, Gayle
