A NOTE FROM THE EDUCATOR

It’s hard to believe it’s May! Hopefully your members’ projects got off to a great start and are progressing along. TSC PAPER CLOVER CAMPAIGN The entire community can support Pickaway County 4-H during the Paper Clover Campaign on

April 23-May 4 at Tractor Supply Co. Please promote this event to your friends and neighbors. Support 4-H by purchasing a Paper Clover for $1. Two 4-H clubs have volunteered to host events at TSC during the campaign. Thank you! Contact TSC for your club to get involved.

DOG WORK-OUTS

Please let your members know that Dog Work-outs

will take place on May 13 and May 27 at 6:00 pm at the 4-H/Grange Building at the Fairgrounds.

990-N E-POSTCARD

If you have not already done so, May 15 is the deadline to file your club’s 990-N e-postcard. Each club must do this annually to maintain their tax exempt status. Use the January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2013 tax year when filing. Please submit a copy of your confirmation or Error message to the Extension Office. The web link to file the 990-N (e-Postcard) is http://epostcard.form990.org/

CREATIVE WRITING DUE Please remind your 4-H members taking the #588 Creative Writing project to turn in their “writing sample” to the Extension Office no later than 4:30

pm on June 16. Only their writing sample should be submitted. All other items for their project should be brought to the judging.

SKILLATHON & SUMMER HELP NEEDED There are several places where the 4-H program can use volunteer help during the summer-time. If you, an alumni, or 4-H parent is available to help at summer events including one or both days of Skillathon Judging, please contact the Extension Office. This year’s skillathon volunteer times will

be June 16 and 17 from 10:30 am-3:30 pm and 3:00 pm-8:00 pm each day. Skillathon Judging is at the Fairgrounds. Last year we were quite low on volunteers. Please encourage your parents and alumni to work a time slot.

SKILLATHON/QUALITY ASSURANCE SURVEYS In order to assess the level of knowledge of our members, Ohio 4-H is conducting a pre-post survey. We will participate in this during Skillathon. This is not a test, and it will not be graded. For the pre-survey, members will answer 10 statements related to Quality Assurance. For the post-survey, members will answer the same 10 statements and provide their demographic information. Please make your 4-H families aware of this addition and address any concerns they may have. If you would like to help your members prepare for the survey, you can review the following words/phrases with them:

A VCPR is important

Identifying animals

Extra-label drug use

Health management plan

Consumers

Antibiotics

Proper pen size

4-H AND JUNIOR FAIR SPONSORS Thank you to those that are currently supporting 4-H and Junior Fair awards. There are still many sponsorship opportunities available, specifically in the areas of horses, breeding goats, breeding rabbits, and other livestock breeding classes. Also, items like the Annual Banquet can always be supported with any dollar amount a donor is interested in providing. For questions or to sponsor an award, contact Dolores Shaeffer at [email protected]

JUDGING SCHEDULES

In this newsletter you will find a flier with the judging dates by project. Be sure to note that

Clothing Judging is on Wednesday, June 18, with

the Style Review on Thursday, June 26. We continue to recognize the conflict with Wednesday judging and the rabbit show and have made attempts to accommodate that overlap. Complete judging schedules for Skillathon, Clothing, Food/Creative Arts/Home Ec, and Special Interest projects are posted on our website. Please share the schedule with your 4-H members so they show up at the correct time. Pre- judging will be held for those that cannot attend their regular judging day.

Pre-Judging will take place on Tuesday, June 10 from 1:00-5:00 pm by appointment.

OHIO STATE FAIR LIVESTOCK ENTRIES

Ohio State Fair Livestock entries (except dogs and

horses) have a postmark due date of June 20. 4-H members must be enrolled in the project at the county level in order to exhibit in a Junior Fair class at State Fair. Two types of entries are available: paper or on-line. All Junior Fair paper entries require a signature from an Extension Educator. June is a busy month where often we are out of the office for programs so please plan ahead. Entries must be complete with all exhibitor and class information before we are able to sign them. Entry forms, W-9, and Vendor forms are located on the State Fair website at www.ohiostatefair.com. Alternatively you may make your State Fair entries on-line. This greatly simplifies the process as you do not need to get a signature from us prior to entering. State Fair verifies all on-line entries with us after the deadline.

STATE FAIR SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY Ohio State Fair offers scholarships for 4-H members who participate in OSF events and are 2014 graduates or those continuing their education at an accredited institution. Deadline to apply is

June 20. Forms are at: www.ohiostatefair.com/.

SERVICE OPPORTUNITY The 2014 Deercreek Dam Days Festival committee is finalizing their schedule of events and looking to work with local groups and organizations, such as 4-H groups to provide activities or events for kids

for their KidsFest on May 31 from 11am-2pm. They are open to any ideas that 4-H clubs may have. KidsFest is shaping up to be a big, fun, and exciting event. You can visit their webpage to see a complete list of activities, which includes Award Winning Children's Book Author Megan Fisher, COSI on Wheels, and much more.

There will also be a parade on May 28 for local organizations. 4-H groups are invited to participate. For more information go to www.deercreekdamdays.com or contact Edward P Cox, Mayor - Village of Williamsport & President - Deercreek Dam Days Festival at [email protected] or 740-207-7136

QA CLUB REQUIREMENTS Remember to schedule the QA packet of activities OR schedule special speaker or club program on animal care. The QA DVD’s are also still available for check-out. These activities should take place prior to skillathon and be documented in your club secretary’s records.

JUNIOR FAIR LIVESTOCK ENTRIES

The Livestock Entry papers have been posted to our website at http://pickaway.osu.edu/topics/4-h-youth-development/fair-information. Each club must submit their entries for the following specie areas: beef, sheep, goats, hogs, dairy, poultry, rabbits, and llamas. Entry papers should include your entire club, should be complete, and include all requested information. These are the papers the Awards Coordinator, Senior Fair Board and Livestock/Sale Committee will utilize for ordering awards, making pen assignments, preparing for fair weigh-in and more. Entries are due by 4:30 pm on

May 15. If you have members on your form who later drop the project or lose an animal, please let

us know by June 10 so we can be as prepared going into fair as possible. Thank you! You will not find entries for horses or dogs as the exhibitors register for those projects individually. All horse and dog exhibitors should have received their packets earlier this month.

SCRAPIE ID FOR SHEEP AND GOATS

All sheep and goats that are sexually intact are required to have a scrapie ID. This means ewes and bucks for sheep and does and bucks for goats. Scrapie ID is not required for wethers at the county level, but is required at the Ohio State Fair and many jackpot shows. Scrapie ID can be a tag for sheep and a tag or tattoo for goats. The ID must come from the breeder as it identifies the animal back to its original herd. A representative from ODA will visit the fair to check for Scrapie ID compliance.

GOAT PENS

Please remind your 4-H families that there are not enough pens for goat projects. Many clubs will be asked to supply their own pens. Pens are to be 5 x 5 feet and hold two goats. Unfortunately, exhibition numbers for animals are not complete until early June so that information comes with a very short turn-around time. It’s best that everyone has pens lined up in case they need to bring them.

PAS HORSE SHOW

Pickaway County horse exhibitors who wish to show at the Ohio State Fair must first qualify. Qualification takes place through our Performance Against the Standard, PAS show in Fairfield County. Pickaway County youth have two

opportunities to try out: June 7 and June 28. All PAS registration information is posted on our website at www.pickaway.osu.edu . It is due to the

show steward by June 1.

FAIR KICK OFF PARADE

The Pickaway County Fair Kick-Off Parade will

take place on Monday, June 23 at 5:00 pm. The Junior Fair Board will award prizes for the top floats and the top walking groups. 4-H clubs, FFA chapters, youth and service organizations, government officials and festival royalty are encouraged to participate. See the attached flier

for complete information. Entry deadline is June 2. Entry forms are available at the Extension office or on our website at www.pickaway.osu.edu.

JR. FAIR KING & QUEEN APPLICATIONS Any youth organization participating in the Pickaway County Junior Fair is eligible to have participants in the Junior Fair King and Queen Contest. Contestants must be at least l6 years of age by January 1

st, not married, and a member of a

youth organization participating at the fair. Completed applications are due to the OSU

Extension Office, Pickaway County by June 2. Interviews will take place on Tuesday evening

June 10. This year’s contest at the fair will take

place on Sunday, June 22 at 4:00 pm. Information and applications can be found on our website.

THANK YOU POSTER CONTEST The 4-H committee is once again hosting a Thank You Poster Contest. All 4-H and FFA members are encouraged to make a creative poster thanking a 4-H or Junior Fair supporter (ex: class sponsor or livestock buyer). Everyone is encouraged to place a poster thanking their buyer near their animal’s pen, but only those entered in the contest will be hung in the Show Arena or Grange Building and judged. See the attached flier for complete information. Entries are due to the Extension Office

by June 10. As this is a competition, Cloverbud entries will not be placed. Thank you Madison Livewires 4-H Club for purchasing the awards.

CLUB BOOTHS The club booth assignment sheet is posted on-line. Booths are 4 feet deep and either 8 or 16 feet long. For security, lattice or other fencing is recommended!! Each year there are clubs that experience issues with booth security. Each club is charged with patrolling the booths. Please ask your club parents to assist. Also, if you have a backdrop that goes higher than the divider wall, you should paint the back white or cover it in a material that does not distract from the booth behind it. Be flexible…the booth behind you may want to utilize the back of your booth. Booth set up is 8:00 am to 10:00 pm on Thursday,

June 19 through Sunday, June 22. Booth tear-

down is Sunday, June 29 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

RABBIT REMINDERS Market and Breeding Rabbits will NOT have a May tattoo day. Market Rabbits will be marked during fair weigh-in with a permanent marker. Breeding Rabbits must be tattooed prior to fair. This can be done by the member, breeder, advisor, veterinarian, etc. Breeding Rabbits should be tattooed early enough for advisors to list the tattoo on their fair entries that are due May 15.

Cloverbud Activities

Please make sure your Cloverbud members are aware of the fun Cloverbud activities that take place at 10:00am, Monday-Friday of the fair in the Picnic Shelter.

TUESDAY SHOW TIMES Please note the time changes to Tuesday’s Junior Fair shows:

9:00am Poultry 2:00pm Goats 6:00pm Sheep

JUNIOR FAIR BOARD UPDATES The Junior Fair Board is a group of teens that represents youth organizations that participate in the Pickaway County Junior Fair. They meet monthly to plan and give leadership to many Junior Fair events. The Junior Fair Board has been very actively preparing for fair. In addition to planning Jr. Fair events like the King/Queen contest and Kick-Off Parade, the Junior Fair Board has also planned a service day, a canned food drive event, and a Junior Fair Fun event for everyone to enjoy. We hope you will encourage your club to participate in the opportunities they have developed. In addition, applications for the 2015 Junior Fair Board will be available starting fair week.

Applications are due by September 1.

JUNIOR FAIR FUN EVENT Come out and show your Junior Fair spirit at the

Junior Fair Fun Event on Sunday, June 22 from 6:00-7:00 pm at the Fairgrounds Show Arena. Each team of six will compete in a series of games and relays. Clubs/Chapters may have as many groups entered as they wish. A flier with complete information is enclosed. Sign-up’s are due by

June 10.

CANNED FOOD DRIVE The Junior Fair Board is hosting a canned food

drive. The event will take place on June 16 and 17 in the 4-H/Grange Building during the Skillathon. 4-H members are encouraged to bring non-perishable items to donate. Junior Fair Board members will be on hand to accept the items. Each member that participates will receive candy as a thank-you.

DRUG USE NOTIFICATION FORMS

Drug Use Notification Forms are required for all exhibitors with market steers, goats, swine, sheep, poultry, dairy beef feeders, and lactating dairy cows and goats. The DUNF’s are passed out during Skillathon Judging so they can be completed and ready to turn in at fair weigh-in. They must be complete which includes each required section filled in, along with signatures by the exhibitor and a parent. Be sure to contact the Extension Office if you have any questions on completing a DUNF.

LIVESTOCK SALE REMINDERS

The complete Livestock Sale rules and official wording is in the fairbook but here is a synopsis to share with your members:

ALL exhibitors must make their “sale intentions” by the end of each show they exhibit in. A sale intention is a signed form that indicates if the exhibitor will sell their animal through the ring or in a packer group. Exhibitors can sell one animal through the ring. Even if you have just one animal, you must make a sale intention for that animal. Do this at the announcer’s stand/table during your show.

Market shows are “partial terminal”. This means the Grand and Reserve animals MUST SELL at the sale. The sale is a terminal sale

If an exhibitor wishes to take a market animal home and not sell it through the sale ring, they may do that if they complete the proper paperwork and requirements.

The option of taking an animal home is to assist exhibitors who wish to show their market animal at the Ohio State Fair, take it home for personal freezer meat, or to use in a breeding program.

To take a market animal home, the Exhibitor or Exhibitors Parent must sign a release form on Monday, June 23 from

6:00pm-7:30pm in the

Grange Building. There is a charge of $25 for each animal you will be taking home, payable Monday evening.

If you wish to take a light or heavy animal home the same rules and form applies.

Market animals that have received a release must be loaded out on Friday from 9-10:00am.

All “group” animals sell at packer bid price.

POULTRY POLLORUM REQUIREMENTS

Poultry must check in on Sunday, June 22 from

10:00 am – 1:00 pm at the Poultry Barn. Bring a copy of your Pollorum certificates to turn in before the birds enter the barn. Birds should not enter the fairgrounds or barn during any other time and should not be taken into the barn until their pollorum certificate has been approved. Please share with your members that the poultry barn will be closed on Saturday. Refer to the fairbook for complete information on pollorum free certification. Each member that needs to have a pollorum test completed for their poultry must schedule and complete this on their own. Pollorum test results for chickens are usually immediate; however, the results for turkeys can take up to 3 weeks. Please plan accordingly! Just a note, project books are 4-H’s form of record keeping. You are encouraged to have your pollorum papers in your project book at skillathon. Looking for more information on preparing your poultry for fair? Check out the resource, “So You Are Taking a Poultry Project” on our website at: http://pickaway.osu.edu/topics/4-h-youth-development/livestock-information

OHIO 4-H SPELLING BEE How do you spell 4-H? It’s not a trick question! Each year during the Ohio State Fair a spelling bee is held for students in grades 3-4 and 5-6. The bee is now a bit greener with the added involvement of 4-H. Youth can participate if their school is holding a bee or through county 4-H involvement. Each county can send just one 4-H speller per age group. Interested in qualifying? The Maumee Valley EERA will host a Spelling Bee on Saturday,

June 7 starting at 9:30 am. Please let us know if you have a 4-H member who is interested.

DO YOU HAVE A UNIQUE 4-H ANECDOTE? Many times through each year we learn of a youth or adult, currently or previously involved in Ohio 4-H, who has an interesting or special 4-H anecdote which illustrates the impact that 4-H can have on lives. These stories might be project based, club based, community based or career based. The Ohio 4-H Foundation Board would like to solicit such anecdotes, or “stories” to help share the impact that 4-H has made, and is making, on the lives of Ohioans. If you have a “story line” that you think is interesting, special or unique, please go to the link below to enter a sentence or two description of that “story line”, along with the contact person and contact information of the person who can provide, or who has sources to provide, the details about that “story line”. The State 4-H Office will contact that person for additional information The information can be entered at the following web-based survey site: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/3XZTHN9.

2014 Pickaway County 4-H Skillathon Schedule

June 16 & 17

Pickaway County Fairgrounds – Grange Building

Skillathons are Pickaway County’s method of project judging as well as the completion of Quality Assurance certification for all members taking beef, sheep, swine, dairy, goat, rabbit (except pet rabbit), poultry, horse (except Horseless Horse), dogs (except You & Your Dog), and llama projects. 4-H members must go through the skillathon in order to complete their projects. Completion of their projects makes them eligible to exhibit at the county fair. A club schedule is below. The times are strongly encouraged to keep traffic flowing smoothly. Your club scheduled time is strongly recommended, however, members may come during the open times if they are unable to make their scheduled club time. Please be patient and prepared to wait if a great number of individuals do not use their club’s scheduled time.

If members cannot attend judging on June 16th or 17

th, a pre-judging day has been set for Tuesday, June 10

th from

1:00-5:00 pm by appointment. Members will need to call the Extension office to schedule a pre-judging appointment. As

our skillathons are held just days before fair, there will be NO LATE JUDGING OR MAKE-UP JUDGING for those who

forget. If a member has not been judged by 8:00 pm on Tuesday, June 17th

, that member will not be eligible to

show at the fair. Members are required to follow the same dress code policy as for special interest judging: “Special interest project exhibitors (as well as skillathon participants) may wear shorts and open toed shoes, but must wear a shirt with no midriff showing, the torso must be completely covered.” Members participating in the skillathon should treat this experience as a valued educational experience that should be taken seriously. We want members to develop communication and interview skills, including personal presentation. Inappropriate attire includes ball uniforms (clean or dirty), work uniforms, dirty work clothes, and tops with spaghetti straps. There are restrooms in the building if members need to change their clothing either to or from work or a sporting event. Please emphasize to your members the importance of personal presentation.

The Computer Workshop is graciously providing us with enough computers to facilitate our judging, and letters

of thanks are always appropriate (Attn: Terri Williams Davy, 5131 Post Road, Suite 201, Dublin, OH 43016).
